     Classification of workforce based on their function or


    projects:

    ◦ Function
     The area of responsibility
     Usually involves education, training and/or experience
     E.g. marketing, design, manufacturing

    ◦ Project
     The set of activities performed for a particular product

    ◦ These classifications overlap


    • Functional organization
    ▫ The organizational links are
    primarily among those who
    perform similar functions
    ▫ Groups/teams specialized in
    marketing, R&D, design,
    manufacturing, etc.
    ▫ Team members involved in many
    different projects
    ▫ Fosters development of
    specialization and expertise
    • Project organization
    ▫ The organizational links are
    primarily among those who work
    on the same project
    ▫ Teams include people from
    several different functions
    (marketing, design,

     Matrix organization
    ◦ Hybrid of functional and project organizations – individuals are linked to others
