Earning Money
Salaries and Wages
 A salary is a fixed annual (yearly) amount paid to an employee.
 A wage is money that is paid at an hourly rate to a person doing a job.
1 year = 52 weeks
= 26 fortnights
= 12 months
= 4 Quarters
And 1 month ≠4 weeks 1 Quarter = 3 months
Example1. Georgina works for 3 days a week and earns a salary of $670.85 per week. How
much does she earn per:
a) Fortnight? = $670.85 × 2 = $1341.70
b) Year? = $670.85 × 52 = $34 884.20
c) Month? = $34 884.20 ÷ 12= $2907.02 to the nearest cent
d) Quarter? =$670.85 × 13 = $8721.05

equivalent weekly salary?
Yearly salary = $4600 × 12 = $55 200
Weekly salary = $55 200 ÷ 52 = $1061.54 to the nearest cent

Example4. Ella works a 35-hour week as a waitress and is paid $23.86 per hour. What is her
weekly wage?
Weekly wage = $23.86 × 35 = $835.10

Example5. Yoshi earns $992.50 for working a 25-hour week as a security guard. What is his
hourly rate of pay?
Hourly rate = $992.50 ÷ 25 = $39.70

Example 6. Sophie works a 38-hour week and is paid $28.75 per hour. How much does she

Example7. Frisco has casual work at a fast-food store. He is paid $6.50 per hour Monday to
Friday and $9.80 per hour over the weekends. Calculate his total pay for a week in which he
worked from 5.30 pm to 10 pm on Friday and from 6 pm to 9.15 pm on Saturday.
Friday 5.30 pm to 10 pm is 4.5 hours = $6.50 × 4.5 = $29.25
Saturday 6 pm to 9.15 pm is 3.25 hours= $9.80 × 3.25 = $31.85
Total earned = $29.25 + $31.85 = $61.10
Q14. Juan has casual work for which he is paid $7.20 per hour Monday to Friday, and $10 per hour
on the weekends. Calculate his total pay for a week in which he worked from 5 pm to 10 pm on
Thursday and from 2.30 pm to 7.00 pm on Saturday.
Q15. Mimi worked the following hours in one week.
