In this essay, I will go over the sources that I used for my bibliography essay. First off, I
would like to start with an article by Dogra, Rajeev. “Addictive Behaviour: Aetiology and
Treatment.” Dysphrenia, vol. 3, no. 2, July 2012, pp. 119–25. This talks about how addiction
can be a major disadvantage to an individual, and how it develops overtime with many
things. The author explores for the potential causes of addiction, and there seems to be a
lot of factors that contribute to addictions. Such as: substance abuse (e.g., drugs, alcohol),
mobile devices, and other activities that make an individual do the same things in a daily
basis. The biggest potential cause that associates with all of the factors mentioned above is
mostly anxiety/ stress. Most people nowadays who are stressed tend to get addicted to
something because they either find it stress relieving, or as a form of a distraction from
something. It eventually gets to the point that it draws concern to family members of that
individual. The article goes over various treatment approaches for addictive behavior. This
reduce potential self-harm. The author discusses the effectiveness of different treatment
methods and the challenges in providing effective interventions, such as relapse prevention
for instance. Electronic devices and substance abuse is the most common addiction today,
and those 2 types of addictions is the biggest challenge for psychologists, and lawmakers to
address the situation. Unfortunately, little effort is being done due to poor leadership, little
funding, and not that many professionals are out there finding ways to combat these
challenges that affect minors and adults. The root cause of substance abuse is mostly by
criminals, and the root cause of constant electronic use is pretty much stress. Combatting
something that is a very high number will likely take several years for the problem to start
going down. This also depends on funding, the amount of professionals, and the decisions
of the lawmakers.
Another article that I would like to go over is by Hogan, Michael J. “Collaborative Positive
Psychology: Solidarity, Meaning, Resilience, Wellbeing, and Virtue in a Time of Crisis.” The
article talks about introducing the field of positive psychology and the context of a crisis, such as
the global pandemic, by highlighting the need for a collaborative and holistic approach to
address challenges that may come ahead as the time goes by. Hogan discusses the concept of
solidarity and its role in promoting collective well-being and resilience during the time of crisis.
This could include examples of how communities come together in challenging times, how
communities can help each other to prevent any problems from getting worse over time, and
how tactics can be developed if the ordinary ways cannot be done due to a problem that could
affect one or the other. Hogan explores the significance of finding the meaning and the purpose
of these tactics of improvements during a crisis. This section may discuss how individuals and
societies can derive meaning from adversity and how it contributes to overall well-being for
others. He also talks about how strategies are brought up for maintaining or improving well-
being during crises, including self-care practices, social support, alternate communication,
increased safety measures, and mental health interventions. This can contribute a benefit for
other communities that are also seeking for help. This section could explore how virtues like
compassion, empathy, and altruism come to the fore in times of adversity. Hogan emphasizes
context of positive psychology to address the multifaceted challenges posed by crises. Like right
now, we are in a multi-crisis that affects not just everyone but the economy for the most part.
The key points of this article are offering insights into how a collaborative positive psychology
approach can help individuals and societies thrive during challenging times like right now. Being
resilient is the best thing most people can do to help themselves from any problem during hard
times. For example: The COVID-19 Pandemic has caused a major downfall on the economy, and
the populations which made a lot of people lose their loved ones. So, extreme safety measures
had to be implemented to keep people safe from contracting the deadly and contagious virus.
New ways to communicate were used by mobile devices, instead of having to go in person the
old way. This made people adapt to the new environment by communicating online, which
made it easier to talk to others near or far away. Social distancing was another factor that
contributed to the pandemic, which was a way to keep others safe, and to prevent the virus
from spreading even more. That being said, developing new skills to combat hard challenges in
life is one of the ways to overcome the problems in life, and to continue prospering.
Another article I would like to go over is an article by Kashdan, Todd B., et al. “Evolving
Positive Psychology: A Blueprint for Advancing the Study of Purpose in Life, Psychological
Strengths, and Resilience.” Journal of Positive Psychology, vol. 17, no. 2, Mar. 2022, pp. 210–18.
The article probably begins by introducing the field of positive psychology and its core areas of
interest, such as purpose in life, psychological strengths, and resilience. It highlights the need for
evolution and advancement in these areas. Todd looks into the concept of a purpose in life and
its role in promoting well-being and positive mental health. This section may explore the
benefits of having a sense of purpose and how it can be measured and cultivated in many ways.
He talks about various psychological strengths, including character strengths, and their impact
on individuals' overall well-being. This can open up how the developments and applications of
these strengths can contribute to flourishing in life. The article may present a blueprint or
proposed strategies for advancing research in these areas. This may include interdisciplinary
collaborations, innovative measurement tools, and emerging trends in the field. Kashdan may
conclude by discussing the future directions for positive psychology, especially in the context of
purpose, strengths, and resilience. This could include the potential implications for mental
health interventions and policy. Let’s just say that you were feeling down, and you want to find
ways how to improve yourself, and get out of this problem that is holding you down. Well, there
are many ways that you can find that can be a helping hand. For example: Resilience. Resilience
is a way to rebound from being down to prospering in life. One of the examples of being
resilient is by focusing on the positive things, and not the negative things that will affect your
emotions. The factors that make up resilience is self-awareness, mindfulness, self-care, positive
relationships and a purpose for something. Speaking to family members can also be another
The last article I want to go over is an article by Mims, Lauren. “Having Fun Isn’t Hard: A
Quick Fix Designed to Promote Independent Reading.” College Teaching, vol. 68, no. 4, Oct.
2020, pp. 172–75. Lauren talks about highlighting the importance of independent reading in
higher education and how it can enhance students' critical thinking and learning experiences,
such as in universities and high schools. Mims talks about the common challenges faced by
instructors in promoting independent reading, such as student apathy, lack of motivation, and
time constraints. This is one of the flaws in universities when it comes to motivating students to
do their best in their course, and in their careers. Mims points out the significance of making
reading enjoyable for students. This may include exploring methods to connect course materials
with students' interests and making reading assignments more engaging. Mims may introduce
solutions or strategies that can be implemented to encourage independent reading. These could
relevant audio texts. The results of implementing these strategies can bring benefits to
students. This may include improved comprehension, critical thinking skills, and a greater
appreciation for reading. Along with that, higher rate of graduations, and more professionals
