Religion has been a way for most people to identify the morality of their actions and
how to deal with those actions. Christianity has exposed me from these norms that
are contradicting at some point. Living in a household filled with Born Again
Christians, I’ve been taught and sermonized that religion is not the basis of my
relationship with God and how I should view situations. Being a "Maka- Diyos" does
not imply that you always do good deeds, actively participate in church events, or
have a large number of religious acquaintances. It is a character who depicts a
person's relationship with God. It is crucial to remember that God knows if we are
sincere in our actions and if they are in accordance with His will. I constantly remind
myself that being maka-Diyos is expressing one's spiritual convictions while
respecting the spiritual beliefs of others. Speaking with honesty so we can receive
honesty in return. Christianity has assured me that it is all about God’s overwhelming
presence that should always be acknowledged whenever we make decisions and go
by our day.
Growing up, my family was always willing to address significant societal topics with
me, which became an important part of my character development and how I
perceive certain issues. I've always known that being "Makatao" represents someone
who is open, sensitive, and respectful of social and cultural diversity. I've met many
people from various organizations who manage to be respectful of one other's
viewpoints. As a student, I can demonstrate this trait by simply participating in school
events and being cooperative with the work allocated to me. Helping my peers,
being kind to others, and avoiding actions that may be offensive to others. Speaking
of which, for most of my high school years and up to this day, I've been extremely
vocal about my opposition to bullying and how I can assist to prevent this issue, which
is still prevalent in our society. My wish for individuals, especially students, is to be
aware of the consequences that can occur when we attempt to do something that
goes against being makatao and that they can embody this trait by just being
courteous to one another.
A mentor of mine from 3 years ago once said to us, "Remember, don't just throw
anything anywhere". It may seem like a simple advice, but it bears so much truth
about our disregard for the environment. Makakalikasan represents the importance
of environmental stewardship and how we may use our resources wisely and
economically. Ever since I was a kid, I've always felt uneasy anytime I see something
unorganized or just plain messy. To avoid stress from the mess, I try to keep my place
neat and clean as much as possible at all times. Unplugging an equipment when not
in use is a basic rule in every Filipino family. This is just one example of how we save
energy and help the environment. I also strive to practice waste management
whenever we have a large amount of food waste. I never truly justified my use of so
much plastic waste throughout my life, but one thing is certain: as a person, I learn
new things and gradually improve.
Makabansa, is a virtue that anyone should possess. It reflects the country and its
people. It also shows the love, support, and concern of an individual for the land of
his or her birth. As a Filipino, it is my job to express pride in being Filipino by
exercising my rights and responsibilities as a Filipino citizen. Respecting the flag and
our national anthem is one way I put this value into action. Take great pride in the
range of Filipino cultural representations, practices, and traditions, as well as the
diversity and development of our languages. As a student, I am also responsible for
maintaining appropriate behavior within the school premises. I will contribute to this
by abiding the rules of the school and the community.
I personally believe that no human can ever perfect these values, but as people that
are willing to put effort on attaining these values, what we can do is continue to learn
from our actions and apply our realizations into practice. It really made me have a
deep meditation and reflect the things I can do for people and for our nation. I will
use this opportunity to be least an example for younger generations to educate and
do my best to apply these values in my life.
