to hit a shuttlecock across a net.)

Okay, Badminton is racquet sport that

played using racquet to hit a

shuttlecock, usually this game played Yes ma’am Abby!

by 1 vs 1 / singles and 2 vs 2 / doubles.

Do you understand what is

badminton?

Nice! So, now let’s discuss the history of

badminton. Pay attention to the slides that I
will be showing you while I’m discussing.

The roots of badminton can be

traced to ancient Greece,

China and India.

•During ancient time the

badminton was called

None Ma’am !
“battledore” (bat or paddle)

and “shuttlecock” (also called

bird or birdie).

•In 1600s, battledore and

shuttlecock was just a game

involving 2 persons hitting a

shuttlecock toward each other

as many times as possible

(Expected answer: Because of the wind
before it hit the ground. that can affect the direction of
shuttlecock when playing and also the
•It used to be an upper-class bumps and uneven terrain on the floor.)

game in Europe, including

England

Do you have any question about the

history of badminton?

Ok, if you don’t have any question about

the history of badminton let’s go facilities.

The only facility in badminton is Badminton

court. Usually, badminton can be played
indoor and outdoor but most of players
preferred to play indoor even the
tournaments or competition is only done
indoors.

Why tournaments or competition is only

done indoors?

There are two reasons why the

tournaments or competitions is only done
indoors. Firstly, you don’t have to worry
about bumps and uneven terrain because
indoor badminton courts are uniformly
designed to follow the standards of BWF
and employ the standard material of
wooden flooring or Tara flex to maximize
movement without risking inflicting injuries.

Secondly, the shuttlecocks are not

exposed to unpredictable wind levels which
means that they will not change their
direction. This allows players to accurately
control the shuttlecocks and predict where
they will land. Now, let’s tackle the
badminton court. There are specific calls on
those lines in badminton court, first is:

•Short Service Line - With laws of

badminton dictating specific rules for
service in badminton, the court has two
service lines.

•Doubles long service line - In doubles, the

serve may not go past this line.

•Center Line - the Center Line is the line

that divides the court from the Short
Service Line to the Back Boundary Line.

•Singles long service line – in singles, the

serve may not go past this line

•Sidelines for singles - the singles sideline

designates the out- of-bounds for singles
play.

•Sidelines for doubles - the doubles

sideline designates the out- of-bounds for
doubles play.

•Right service court - the player who

serves first in any game shall do so from
the right side of the service court on which
they begin the match. Also, when the
server’s score is even, the server serves
from the right.

•Left service court - when the server's

score is odd, the server serves from the left
service court. Yes ma’am Abby!

Do you understand the parts of badminton

court?

Good. Now, let’s tackle the badminton

equipment. We have four equipment for
badminton.

First, Badminton net

•A mesh net divides the badminton court

into two sides. A badminton net is placed
lower than a volleyball net at five feet and
one inch high on the sides and five feet
high in the center.

•The net length is 22 feet and 30 inches

wide with a 3-inch white tape doubled over
the top.

Badminton Racquet / Racket

•Made from materials such as carbon fiber

or lighter metals such an aluminum

•There are 4 parts in badminton racket

which is head / frame, shaft, handle, and
string.Shuttlecock

•Shuttlecock acts similarly to a ball in other

racket sports. However, the design of the
shuttlecock creates more drag as it is
propelled through the air due to its
feathered shape.

•The feather shuttlecock is made of goose

feather and hard cork. The synthetic
shuttlecock is made from plastic feathers.

Badminton Shoes
None Ma’am!!
•In badminton you are likely to occasionally
slide as you move side to side – this
means you need a shoe that offers support
and protects your ankles. When you are
moving fast across a hard court, the friction
can lead to blisters on your skin – proper

badminton shoes make it less likely that

you will develop blisters.

Do you have any questions?

Now, let’s go to basic skills / strokes in

badminton.

Footwork

•Every time you move away from your

base to hit the shuttle, you must quickly
return to your base to prepare yourself for
your opponent’s shot.

•Take only 2-3 steps when moving to the

back of the court.

•Stretch only 1 step towards the sides of

the court.

•Take only 2-3 steps to the front of the

court.

•Always remember your base (starting

point) will be at the yellow dot in the
middle. The arrows indicates the possible
movements around the court.

Proper gripping (forehand)

•Your thumb does not necessarily have to

press against the wider surface of the
badminton grip for a forehand stroke.

•Your index finger should be the one “in

control” in a forehand stroke. This simply
means using your index finger to push the
racquet forward while doing a forehand
stroke.

•However, rest your thumb comfortably

anywhere near the wider surface of the
badminton grip to enable you to change to
a backhand grip quickly.

Proper gripping (backhand)

•The key to perform strong backhands

depends on how you hold your racquet.

shot comes from the push of your thumb.

•A backhand stroke requires you to use

your thumb. So, you should now press
your thumb on the wider surface of the
badminton grip. Relax your index finger
and move it closer to your middle finger.

Service (backhand)

•Low and short – take a position closer to

the front service line. The racket is swung
forward with little follow-through.Service
(forehand)

•High and deep (singles) – take a position

near and on the proper side of the center
line and about four feet behind the short
service line Drop the bird on the racket
side and swing the racket forward.Clear
(backhand and forehand)

•Clear - a shot used to drive your opponent

away from the net or forecourt or to slow
the game. The bird should fly above the
opponent’s reach and fall. None Ma’am Abby!!
Drop shot (backhand and forehand)

•Drop Shot - any shot that drops

immediately after crossing the net. The
descent of the bird is controlled with little
follow-through.Net shot (backhand and
forehand)

•Net Shot - any shot played as near to the

net as possible, controlled by wrist and
forearm.

Drive (backhand and forehand)

•Drive - a flat shot kept as low as possible

and is second only to the smash as an
attacking shot.

Smash (backhand and forehand)

•Smash - an attacking shot made at the

limit of one’s upward reach and slightly in
front of the shoulder. At the moment of
