DIGITAL VERSATILE BLU RAY DISCS
DISCS I had had a letterboxd account for a few years but never put a whole
lot of effort on keeping up on my movie logging. I decided to make
a new account just for the movies I watched and would watch during
quarantine.
I began with my collection. I didn’t own a
lot but I had a decent size collection of I continued with my Criterions;
DVDs and BluRays. I started with Long Strange Eraserhead ★★★★★
Trip, a 6 hour documentary on the Grateful Monterey Pop ★★★½
Dead and the Clint Eastwood Collection; A Stagecoach ★★★
Fistful of Dollars, The Good, The Bad and the Paths of Glory ★★★★★
Ugly and For a Few Dollars More. I moved on Quadrophenia ★★★★
to Jaws and E.T. to Fantastic Mr. Fox and The A Brief History of Time ★★★½
Grand Budapest Hotel.
At this time, I was also on unemployment. I was making about $800 a
week, because of the covid benefits added. I began buying more crite-
rions and logging them on letterboxd.
I watched all of the original Scooby Doo epi- Night on Earth ★★★★½
sodes and watched Adventure Time. I found the Solaris ★★★★
three Spiderman movies with Tobey Maguire, Mystery Train ★★★★★
watched the first six Star Wars movies and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez ★★★
the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I was rewatch- Memories of Murder ★★★½
ing movies and shows I had already seen and The Seventh Seal ★★★★★
as much as I like all these movies, I needed The Elephant Man ★★★★★
something new. Silence of the Lambs ★★★★★

HORROR & THRILLERS
I had bought the movie, The Thing, for a friend but he already owned it. I had held on to it but
hadn’t watched it yet. I’ve never loved horror movies, but decided to give it a try. I thought the
movie was great. I loved the alien design, Kurt Russell’s one liners and the suspense the John
Carpenter builds in the movie.
This made me more interested in horror movies. I began watching some of the classics; Hal-
loween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Exorcist. I also rewatched The
Shining, which had been the only horror film I would watch ever since I was in high school,
which is also one of my favorites.

C
I
It’s now winter of 2020, I’ve been doing my
weekly applications for my unemployment and
watching movies. I’ve hit almost 1,000 for
N
E
the year. I’ve purchased several criterions
and blu rays. I’ve become infatuated with
Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Throne
of Blood, Ran, Kagemusha and so on. I’ve
become obsessed with samurais. I also get
into the works of other Japanese directors.
Kobayashi (Harakiri, Kwaidan), Ozu (Tokyo
Story, Good Morning), Gosha (Three Outlaw
Samurai, Goyokin), Mizoguchi (Life of Oharu,
M
Ugetsu), Okamoto (Sword of Doom, Kill!) and
Inagaki (Samurai Trilogy, Samurai Banners).

I watch movies for several reasons. 1. Entertainment 2. The tech-
nical aspects and 3. Color. Kurosawa is a master. He is an in-
novative storyteller, master of character development and cine-
matography and a master painter with all colors. I enjoy Ozu’s
filmography due to their humanistic and relatable themes, unique
cinematic techniques, his mastery of a distinctive style, their
timeless quality, social commentary and ensemble casts. Kurosawa
and Ozu are two of my favorite directors of all time. Kobayashi,
Gosha, Mizoguchi, Okamoto and Inagaki are all fantastic as well,
and I still have to deep dive into all of their films.

MY COLLEC
At this point I had filled up what
space I had left in a bookcase
of criterions, dvds and blu
rays. I then ordered a bigger
bookcase. Which was proba-
bly not the best idea. Hav-
ing OCD, I had to fill it
up, I didn’t want to waste
any space. I kept order-
ing and ordering and once
stores started to open I
was taking almost daily
trips to Barnes & Noble,
the D.I. or Target to find
2020
movies to add to my physi-
cal collection. Some of the
THE CRITERION COLLECTION non-criterion titles I found
were: The Lighthouse, Mid90’s,
Since I was getting paid to “job search” and I was living at home. My only ex- Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049,
pense was my car payment. Of course, I wasn’t thinking of when they would stop The Big Lewbowski, There Will Be
giving me free money and decided to start spending it all on Criterions. The bane Blood, Boogie Nights, Full Metal
of my existence is online spending and Criterion has a very lovely website which Jacket, Annihilation, Apocalypse Now,
I have spent many hours combing through. Donnie Darko and Oldboy.
I’d order throught the website as soon as I got my weekly “paycheck.” Some of
the titles I was first buying were; Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Bottle Rocket, Paris, Texas,
Dreams, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, Kagemusha, Onibaba, Harakiri,
Stalker, Ghost Dog, Mishima, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Passion of
Joan of Arc, Mirror, The Samurai Trilogy, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk
with Me and Blue Velvet

STU D IO GHIBLI
I had seen Ponyo as a kid, but hadn’t seen any of Ghibli’s
other movies. Seeing Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Prin-
cess Mononoke and Ponyo (again) made me realize how much
I missed drawing and painting. I ordered a new sketchbook,
pencils and pens and started drawing again. The only thing
I wish I had that Hayao Miyazaki had was his imagination. I
eventually filled 4 sketchbooks. It’s fun to go back and look
through, seeing what movie I had watched or what band I was
listening to (usually Metallica or Blood Incantation).
