ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE
GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE

The term "Gothic" was used in

the Renaissance to describe
certain types of art and
architecture in the Middle
Ages. This art was
considered inferior, just as the
Romans had held themselves
superior to the barbarians. In
the 18th century, the term
"Gothic" morphed into a genre
of literature that had elements
of horror.
• The Gothic grew out of the Romanesque architectural style, when
both prosperity and relative peace allowed for several centuries of
cultural development and great building schemes.
• The Gothic style originated in 12th-century AD France in a suburb north of
Paris, conceived by Abbot Suger (1081-1151 AD), a powerful figure in French
history and the mastermind behind the first-ever Gothic cathedral, the
Basilica of Saint-Denis.
