2023 2024 TOK Essay Planning Template For Students
Prescribed Title - Select one of the 6 prescribed titles as the basis of your essay.
⬩ Identify the key terms in the title by highlighting them or writing them in bold.
Brainstorming Section - Complete the two boxes (B1 and B2) to complete first interaction
B1 MIND MAP to unpack the title - Interpret and analyze (break down) the title
⬩ Are there clearly stated knowledge claims in the title?
⬩ What are the key terms that will need to be interpreted/explained in the context of each
AOK? (Leave room for nuance - definitions for key terms are fluid and should not be general
dictionary definitions).
⬩ What are the concepts embedded in the title?
⬩ How is the knowledge framework embedded in the title? (Scope, Methods/Tools,
Perspectives, Ethics)
AOK 1 - ________________________________
Interpret/explain the key terms or concepts in the context of this AOK. The knowledge framework is a useful tool to provide focus here.
What are your main claims/arguments and supporting specific (real-life) examples linked with the AOK?
Main Claims Points of View Supporting Example(s)
● Main Claims - Clearly articulate the knowledge claims you will use to explore the prescribed title. Remember to reference the
entire PT explicitly. A common pitfall is to address only part of the PT. You are required to sustain focus on the whole PT.
● Points of View - Describe the different points of view (perspectives) you intend to highlight and evaluate through this AOK.
○ Make sure you are clear about the basis for each point of view you examine and HOW you will evaluate it. How would
different knowers discussed in class, and identified through inquiry, approach the knowledge claims that you have
developed? Which knowers support your interpretation of the main claims? Which would criticize your interpretation? How
are both POV’s valid? Theories or paradigms may also be ways to highlight different perspectives.
● Supporting Example(s) - Choose specific examples - not hypothetical scenarios (ex. specific experiments, studies, events..etc.) -
clearly connected to the AOK being explored. Avoid cliche examples - try to approach your claim in an authentic and original way.
Consider choosing an example that you have studied in one of your classes - with which you are familiar.
Links to AOKs - 2 are required Note that the title may specify one or both AOKs
AOK 2 - ________________________________

Conclusion -
⬩ Are there any generalizations that emerge from your knowledge claims? A ‘generalization’
would apply to both AOKs being explored. Arrive at a ‘soft conclusion’ or a conditional
conclusion.
