Job Description
Job Title: Trust Doctor in General Surgery (equivalent to CT1/2)

Band: MT03 (Trust Doctor CT1/2 equivalent (3 increment levels) + on call banding)

Reports to: Lead Consultant within the specialty

Responsible to: Clinical Director

Base/Department: Surgical Directorate, Royal Oldham Hospital

Main purpose of the job: This new post offers the opportunity for successful candidates to develop and
learn a range of skills in General Surgery in a large and busy hospital. They will be part of the clinical team and
will take part in the appropriate on-call rota. They will rotate in General and Colorectal firm and the training
will be tailored to meet their specific needs. The candidates are also expected to participate in governance
related activities such as audits, case presentations, morbidity and mortality meetings etc. They are also
expected to attend weekly teaching conducted by the department and be a part of dynamic team.

Main Tasks & Overview of Responsibilities


Opportunities are available in the surgery department at Royal Oldham hospital for
doctors who have completed their foundation training or have relevant experience
equivalent to the achievement of Foundation Year 1/2 competences.

The Department
At present The Royal Oldham Hospital is part of a statutory body known as The
Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. The General Surgery department serves the
communities of Bury, Rochdale, North Manchester and Oldham. This area is
collectively known as the North-East sector of Greater Manchester and has a
population of around 800,000. Its main commissioners are Bury, North Manchester,
Oldham and Heywood, Middleton, and Rochdale CCG’s.

Currently emergency and high-risk elective surgery is undertaken at Royal Oldham


and North Manchester General Hospital. The two other hospitals, Fairfield General
Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary provide elective day case / 23 hour general surgery.
It is envisaged once the ‘Healthier Together’ transformation project is fully
implemented, that all high-risk surgery will be delivered from the Royal Oldham
Hospital, with day case and 23 hr stay cases being undertaking on the North
Manchester, Fairfield and Rochdale sites. The transformation project will be completed
over the next 2-3 years.
The Royal Oldham Hospital has approximately 75 general / vascular surgical beds.
There is an 18 bed critical care facility and a surgical assessment unit containing 8
trolleys. A dedicated emergency theatre has been allocated to general surgery from
August 2020.

You are expected to be part of a dynamic team providing high quality care to surgical
patients. You will be responsible, under the supervision of the consultant, for the day
to day care of elective and emergency patients. You will be expected to participate at
level one on call rota for general surgery and cover for authorised absence of
colleagues.

You will work and liaise with the colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to ensure
an appropriate, professional and timely provision of care to patients.
During your post, you will be assigned to both an educational and clinical supervisor
and have regular appraisal with help to build your own portfolio. Time will also be
allotted to attend local weekly teaching as appropriate. You will be encouraged and
expected to participate with other team members in audit and on-going research in the
department. Where appropriate you will also be given study leave and you will be able
apply for departmental funds for attendance at courses and professional exams.

Communications and Relationships


The post holder will be expected to have excellent communication skills and will
interact with nursing staff, medical staff from other specialities and allied health
professionals in addition to other members of the medical team. Both written and
verbal communication will be expected to meet these high standards.

Analytical and Judgmental Skills


The post holder will be expected to act in a professional manner, knowing their own
limitations and liaising with the consultant when required. Local induction will outline
the particular scenarios that consultant involvement is mandated, and the post holder
will ensure that these are adhered to.

Planning and Organisational Skills


The post holder will be expected to contribute to some of the management tasks in the
Department in which they are based. The level of this will be dependent on previous
and current experience, and may involve complaint handling; adverse incident reviews
and rota coordinating. There may be opportunities to develop a business plan under
supervision from the management team.

Responsibility for Patient Care


The post holder must participate and promote activity to improve the quality and safety
of patient care and clinical outcomes. The post holder must be able to formulate
appropriate diagnostic and management plans, taking into account patient
preferences. It is expected that the post holder will understand the importance of
raising via concerns through clinical governance systems.
Responsibility for Policy/Service Development
The post holder will be expected to adhere to NCA/Trust policy & procedures as well
as contributing to the development of existing or new policies.

Responsibilities for Financial and Physical Resources


The Post holder should have enough understanding of how finances are allocated in
order to provide the best service available.
The post holder will minimise waste, improve services and promote the effective use
of resources, you should take financial responsibility for delivering your service at a
level appropriate to your role.
The post holder should understand the roles and policies of local and, where relevant,
regional and national agencies involved in healthcare if they affect your role as a
doctor.

Clinical and Educational Supervision and Personal Development


We aim to support the personal development of our doctors, whilst maintaining a
working environment where patient safety is paramount. A key element is ensuring
high quality clinical and educational supervision. The postgraduate medical education
department works with specialty tutors to support this.
You will be assigned an educational and clinical supervisor. Whilst, these posts are
not formally recognised as Deanery training posts, they will deliver a similar
experience. You will be encouraged and supported in developing and maintaining a
portfolio evidencing their progress and personal development as well as providing
evidence for revalidation. The educational supervisor will discuss the essential
learning outcomes for the post and develop a plan to address the learning needs and
identify appropriate learning opportunities. This will include access to appropriate
teaching, such as foundation or specialty and departmental programs, subject to
service need. Access to relevant study leave will be available, subject to the
agreement of the supervisor and department.

for career development. There are opportunities for involvement in audit and quality
improvement.

Responsibilities for Human Resources


The post holder will be responsible for the supervision of junior staff in their specialty,
and for providing support to Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Specialist Nurses. The
department works closely with the University of Manchester and medical students
frequently are based in the Department. It is expected that the post holder will
contribute to their ongoing education.
Responsibility for Information Resources
You have a legal responsibility for all records (including patient health, financial,
personal and administrative) that you gather or use as part of your work within the
Trust. The records may be paper, electronic, microfiche, audio or videotapes, x-ray
images. You must consult with management if you have any doubt as to the correct
management of the records with which you work. Misuse of or failure to properly
safeguard confidential data will be regarded as a disciplinary offence

continue after you leave the trust employment.

The Northern Care Alliance has a well-established Quality Improvement programme
and it is expected that the post holder will contribute to this. Opportunity for clinical
audit exists both locally and nationally in all areas, and it is expected that the post
holder will support junior staff.

The junior doctor accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional
emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate
Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and
junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the department that while
juniors accept that they will perform such duties, The Secretary of State stresses that
additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular
that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods
or on a regular basis.
