18. In the adjoining figure of a potentiometer arrangement, B is the main battery, C is the cell
whose e.m.f. is to be determined, WW’ is the potentiometer uniform wire, G is the galvanometer
and J is the jockey which may touch any point on the wire WW’. Choose the correct alternative
(s) for the potentiometer to work properly:

(A) The emf of B must be greater than the emf C.

(B) Two batteries B and C must be joined so that the same polarity terminals are joined

(C) The positive terminals of two cells must be joined together to end W
(D) The galvanometer resistance must be less than the resistance of potentiometer wire.
Ans: (A,B)

Sol:

The potentiometer is used to measure the emf of a cell using null deflection method. We get C’s
emf when the current does not flow through the galvanometer(G). For this to happen, C’s emf =
WJ’s emf. The maximum limit of WJ’s is WW’ which is nothing other than B’s emf. Hence, C’s
emf has to be less than B’s emf. Moreover, the voltage difference measured along WJ has to be
equal to that of across C. This difference could either be positive or negative. To ensure that we
at least get a null point. Given we fulfill the first condition, the negative terminals of both B and
C have to be joined together.
 options A and B are correct.

19. A micrometer has a resistance of 100  and a full-scale range of 50μA. It can be used as a
voltmeter or a higher range ammeter provided a resistance is added to it. Pick the correct range

(A) 50 V range with 10 kΩ resistance in series.
(B) 10 V range with 200 kΩ resistance in series.
(C) 5 mA range with 1Ω resistance in parallel.
(D) 10 mA range with 1 kΩ resistance in parallel.
Ans: (B,C)
Sol: Correct options are (B) and (C)
Given the Microammeter has a resistance of 100 ohms and a full range of 50μA. Ammeter can
function as a voltmeter when it is connected in series with a large resistance R. The value of R is
determined by the maximum voltage that will be measured.

(A) The cell absorbs energy at the rate of EI.

(B) The cell stores chemical energy at the rate of (EI − I2 r).
(C) The potential difference across the cell is E + Ir.
(D) Some heat is produced in the cell.
Ans: (A,B,C,D)
Sol: Correct options are A,B,C and D
Rate of absorption of energy is power of the battery
P = IV
P = EI
The potential difference across the cell
ΔV = E − Ir
So, power = I(E = Ir) = EI − I2 r VA + Ir + E = VB
VB − VA = E + Ir
As there is resistance in the cell, so it must generate heat as, H = I2 R

21. A cylindrical conductor has uniform cross-section. Resistivity of its material increases linearly
from left end to right end. If a constant current is flowing through it and at a section of distance
x from left end, then magnitude of electric field intensity is E. Which of the following graphs is
correct?

APNI KAKSHA 9
JEE ADVANCED PAPER – 1
CLASS 12th APNI KAKSHA STAR BATCH

(A) (B)

(C) (D)

Ans: (B)
Sol: If we take resistivity at a distance x from left end as ρ = (ρ0 + αx), then electric field intensity

at this point will be E = A , where i is the current flowing through the conductor.
i
Therefore, E ∝ ρ and E(x) = A (ρ0 + αx)

 Hence, (B) is correct.

22. A source of constant potential difference is connected across a conductor having irregular
cross-section as shown. Then :

(A) electric field intensity at P is greater than that at Q

(B) rate of electrons crossing per unit area of cross-section at P is less than that at Q
(C) the rate of generation of heat per unit length at P is greater than at Q
(D) mean kinetic energy of free electrons at P is greater than that at Q
Ans: (B)
Sol: When a source is connected, a current starts to flow through the conductor. Let it be I. Then,
current density at a section is equal to I/A, where A = cross-sectional area. Since cross-sectional
area at P is maximum, therefore current density at P is minimum. Hence (B) is correct. Since
J′ ℓ ℓρ
electric field is (= Aσ = ), therefore at P electric field is minimum while that at Q is
σ A

ℓ2 ρ
maximum. Rate of generation of heat per unit length at a section will be equal to . It is
A
1
minimum at P and maximum at Q. The mean kinetic energy of free electrons = 2 mvd2

Which is minimum at P and maximum at Q.  Hence (B) is correct.
