Assignment 1 Paralyzed Person - 045552
Individuals with spinal cord injury, just like patients with any
other conditions, have a right to lead good quality and
independent lives. However, due to the limitations presented
by this condition, it is almost impossible to live a good life
without some orthotic devices.
MOBILITY DEVICES
Patients with spinal cord injuries can move
around with the help of a variety of tools,
such as wheelchairs (manual, sport, power,
power-assisted), walking frames, crutches,
hand bikes, canes and specially designed
shoes. It also includes modified cars that
may be driven indoors, usually by members
of the same family.
Transferring Equipment
These make it possible for patients to be
moved around by their carers. It consists of
benches, elevators, slings, and transfer
boards. Transfer devices are designed to
significantly reduce the amount of
assistance a patient requires from carers.
Positioning Apparatus
Positioning aids assist in preserving optimal
performance while keeping body parts safe
and as pleasant as possible. They also assist
in maintaining the health of the
musculoskeletal system. Splints, braces,
backrests, and cushions are some of them.
List of the devices used by
disabled Person
• Mobility aids such crutches1, canes,
wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes,
prosthetics, and orthotics.
• Hearing aids are devices that improve a
person's hearing.
• Cognitive aids to assist those who
struggle with memory, attention, or
other cognitive issues, such as computer
or electrical assistive devices.
People with hearing impairments can watch
movies, TV shows, and other digital
content using closed captioning.Ramps,
grab bars, and larger doorways are examples
of physical alterations made to the built
environment to improve accessibility to
buildings, establishments, and workplaces.
Mobility aids that are compact, powerful,
and allow people with disabilities to
participate in sports and exercise.
Respiratory Apparatus
These are employed for suctioning and in
individuals with respiratory issues. They
consist of CPAP machines and ventilators,
among other things.
Tools for Self-Care
They are mostly used for self-care and
personal regular duties like eating, dressing,
grooming, and menstruation, bowel, and
bladder care. Adapted cutlery, a dressing
stick, a shower bench or commode, and
other items are examples of self-care tools.
Devices for Environmental
Control
They are required to manage the patients'
immediate surroundings, such as turning on
the lights, taking phone calls, opening and
closing doors and windows, etc.
Sporting Goods
They could include gear utilised for a range of
sports and leisure pursuits. Exercise equipment
and physical activity are also included.
Home Alterations
The following are some typical alterations:
1.Modifying the layout of the current floor
2.Adding new structures.
3. Adapting existing spaces to a purpose
4. purchasing a new house
5. Increasing doorways and utilising automatic
doors
6. putting in a ceiling hoist to help with transfers
stairs lifts
It has been concluded that research on patients
with spinal cord injuries using the recommended
adapted equipment is scarce. Understanding the
reasons for non-compliance would enable
appropriate treatment planning and reduce the
amount of money the state and users have to
spend on unneeded reimbursement. The most
frequent reasons for non-compliance with
provisions for adaptive equipment, according to a
retrospective observational study, were
improvements in the patient's health and the
device's high cost, which accounted for 44%, 20%,
11%, and 17% of the causes of non-compliance.
