    OF KNITTING SYMBOLS
    AND ABBREVIATIONS

    NOTES

    This dictionary is a collection of symbols used in German and Russian knitting charts as
    well as the system of symbols recommended by the American Craft Yarn Council.

    Symbols that describe the same knitting stitch or combination of stitches are placed next to
    each other with the German symbols arranged in the first column, Russian symbols in the
    second column, and American symbols in the third column.

    The fourth column hosts the commonly used abbreviations, and the fifth column is
    reserved for a detailed description of the stitches or combinations of stitches depicted by
    the corresponding symbols and abbreviations.

    When the description of the stitches is long, the fifth column is placed underneath the
    columns with the symbols and abbreviations to save space and visually balance the layout.

    All stitches and combinations of stitches are divided into six groups to make it easier for you
    to navigate the dictionary - Basic Stitches, Yarn Overs and Brioche Stitches, Increases,
    Decreases, Textured Stitches, Cables. The full version of this dictionary has an additional
    category - Brioche Cables.

    If there are two or more symbols in the same column, it means that these symbols are
    interchangeable. If there are no symbols in certain columns, it means that these symbols
    were not provided in the systems of symbols used to make this dictionary.

    Please note that this is a short version of the dictionary. The full version has symbols and
    abbreviations that depict over 170 knitting stitches and combinations of stitches.

    cross 2 stitches to the right : slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold it at the back of the work,
    knit the next stitch, then knit the stitch from the cable needle

    1/1 (2-ST) LC (LT), C2F

    cross 2 stitches to the left : slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold it at the front of the work,
    knit the next stitch, then knit 1 stitch from the cable needle

    2/2 (4-ST) RC, C4B

    cross 4 stitches to the right : slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold them at the back of
    the work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle

    cross 4 stitches to the left : slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold them at the front of the
    work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle
