EXPERIMENT NO.

10:
DETERMINATION OF ROUGHNESS COEFFICIENT
IN AN OPEN CHANNEL

How does channel bed roughness affect flow in channels? Why is there a need to consider
roughness in the design of open channels? What are the yypical prismatic cross sections of open
channels?

The objective of the experiment is to determine the Manning’s coefficient of roughness in anopen
channel.

What you need: Mobile bed apparatus, float, ruler, timer

What to do:
1. Switch on the mobile bed apparatus and allow water to flow in the channel until it
is approximately constant.

2. Measure the width of the channel and divide it into three (3) sections of flow.
Visualize a middle section and two sections close to each bank.

3. Let a float traverse a unit length of the channel through each of the sections and
measure the time it takes for the float to move from one end to the other. The
mean velocity of flow is measured by:
𝑑 𝑣 +𝑣 +𝑣
𝑣= 𝑣 =
𝑡 3

4. Compute the theoretical discharge using 𝑄 = 𝐴𝑣 where 𝐴 is the channel cross-

section and 𝑣 is the mean velocity of flow.

5. Measure the inclination of the channel bed 𝜃. If the channel is horizontal, assume a
very small value.

6. Using Manning’s Equation, derive the channel’s roughness coefficient 𝑛.

1
𝑄 = 𝑅 𝑆 (𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠 𝐸𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑖𝑡𝑜𝑛)
𝑛
×
Where: 𝑅 = = and 𝑆 = tan 𝜃

Discuss the other open channel formulas and their corresponding roughness coefficients, the type
of flow that occurs in an open channel, classification of open channel according to the Froude
number, and most economic hydraulic sections.
1. The channel is made of finished concrete and has
the cross section shown. If the downward slope is
0.0008, determine the flow of water through the
channel when y = 2.5 m. Take n = 0.012.

2. The channel is made of unfinished concrete. If it is

required to transport water at 12 m3/s, determine its
downward slope when the depth of the water is 2 m.
Also, what is the critical slope for this depth, and what
is the corresponding critical flow? Take n = 0.014.

3. The drainage pipe is made of finished concrete and is

sloped downward at 0.002. Determine the volumetric
flow from the pipe if the center depth is y = 0.3 m. Take n
= 0.012.
