or, worse, they contain a variety of synthetic and harmful chemicals.
In other words, if a product (or food) doesn’t actually show the USDA Certified Organic seal (or an equivalent
certification in other countries), be extremely cautious and take a very close look at their ingredients list.

USDA Organic vs. “Organic”


You may be wondering how companies can
get away with throwing around words like
“organic”, “natural”, etc. even if they have
no certification to back these labels up.
Well, claims such as “wild-crafted,”
“nontoxic,” “plant-based”, and “free of”
are not highly regulated – in the cosmetics
industry especially – nor do they have legal
definitions.

For example, your “natural” beauty cream


may contain cancer-causing petrochemicals
(as was revealed in 47% of such products in
one study), and it’s all perfectly legal. (3)
Even the word “organic” on the label (with no official USDA Certified Organic seal) isn’t a guarantee
of a safe product as these “organic poser” companies have not had to meet any actual USDA organic
standards, which are very rigorous.

because of how rigorous and strict the certification process is.

• Contains at least 95% true organic ingredients.
• Sources the remaining 5% of ingredients from a strict approved safe list.

• Was not processed using industrial solvents or irradiation.
• Is free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
In addition…
On the farm, organic producers use only natural processes and materials in their farming systems—

AND…

high in omega-3, sustainable, one of the safest fish you can eat, and affordable. Salmon comes in a close
second, although you should opt for Alaskan wild-caught salmon whenever possible.
For plant-based eaters, it’s smart to eat a wide variety of ALA-rich foods to give your body a chance to
convert them into EPA and DHA. Flaxseeds and chia seeds are both great foods on this front, as they’re
high in ALA. Meanwhile, sea vegetables such as seaweed and algae do provide some EPA and DHA,
although you’d need to consume a lot to get sufficient amounts (and you may therefore be consuming far
too much salt and iodine in the process.) However, the good news is that a variety of vegan, algae-based
DHA and EPA supplements are now also available as an option.

BERRIES

Nearly all berries are rich in nutrients


that promote healthy, youthful skin. In
particular, they are an excellent source of
protective, collagen-boosting vitamin C as
