Rationale
Learning to read is one of the most important educational outcomes of primary
education. The ability to read is fundamental to children’s learning, including their
development of broader literacy skills and to their future participation in society
including the workplace.
The Brigada Pagbasa Program is a national movement for reading that aims to
bring together all education champions and supporters to contribute to nation building
by helping all Filipino children enhance their reading skills in the context of
partnership. To show its support to the DepEd’s goal; to provide children access to
quality education, the Buyasan Integrated School teaching force and its stakeholders
conducted reading assessments to identify the learners reading capabilities and to
come up with reading interventions that will help them improve.
The Buyasan Integrated School aims to develop children’s love of reading,
enhance learners reading level performance through constant remediation and develop
learners reading comprehension through different reading materials. The school
reading coordinator attended orientation on the implementation of PHIL-IRI Test and
EGRA and conducted LAC Session to equip the teachers and other reading teachers
such as volunteers and GIP’s the knowledge in conducting the test properly. Each
adviser conducted first the profiling of learners then administered GST or Group
Screening Test to identify the learners that needs to take further assessments and
reading enhancements activities. The learners who got the scores below 14 undergone
PHIL-IRI test and reading remediations while students whose scores are greater than
or above 14 undergone enrichment activities.
Each adviser is tasked to conduct reading remediations on the identified
students and provide reading materials that are suited for their level. Some of the
classroom activities are Buddy-buddy reading during vacant period, pull-out system
conducted by the GIP’s that requires them a minimum of 30 minutes a day, and
storytelling by the teachers and some selected students per day. The GIPs are also

tasked to have a record on the remedial sessions of the learners for them to track the
development of the learners in reading.

Objectives
 To identify and address the learner’s difficulty in reading.
 To enhance pupils reading level performance through constant remediation.
 Develop grade level appropriate, contextualized, or interesting supplemental reading
materials for learners.
 To help learners to develop their reading habit towards becoming an independent
reader.
 Nurture a culture reding at home.

Problems Encountered
Buyasan is one of the farthest barangays of San Mariano, far flung areas suffer
from lack of reading materials and other resources. Because of this, there are learners
who simply choose not to read even though they can. Children who were raised in
homes that promote reading by encouraging them to read together with the members
of the family through picture books, poetry and storytelling are more likely to become
better readers than those home that did not. Furthermore, academic support was not
visible with some parents since most of them are illiterate. Most of the students also
are forgetful and looses focus during remedial sessions.

Best Practices
The best practices identified in the implementation of Brigada Pagbasa in
Buyasan Integrated School are:
a. Implementation of Project READ (Reading Enhancement/Enrichment
Activities for the Development of Learners) that aims to enhance pupils
reading level performance through constant remediation.
b. Reproduction of reading materials that are appropriate for each learners
reading levels.
c. Pull out system conducted by the GIP’s.
