Problem 1
The pump shown in the figure below adds 25 kW
to the water and causes a flow rate of 0.04 m3/s.
Determine the flow rate expected if the pump is
removed from the system.
Assume f=0.016 for either case and neglect
minor losses. Ans: 0.029 m3 /s
Solution1
Problem 2
Water is pumped through a 60-m long, 0.3-m-diameter pipe from a lower
reservoir to a higher reservoir whose surface is 10 m above the lower
one. The sum of the minor loss coefficients for the system is KL =14.5.
When the pump adds 40 kW to the water the flowrate is 0.20 m 3 /s.
Determine the pipe roughness.
Ans: 8.4 mm
solution2
Problem 3
Water is circulated from a large tank, through
a filter, and back to the tank as shown in the
figure. The power added to the water by the
pump is 271 W.
Determine the flow rate through the pipe.
Ans: 0.0014 m3 /s
solution3
Problem 4
Water is pumped with a centrifugal pump, and measurments made on the pump indicate that for a flow rate of
240 gpm ( 1 gpm = 0.063 L/s) the required power is 6 hp (1 hp =745.7 W) . For a pump efficiency of 62%, what is the
actual head rise of the water being pumped.
Ans: 18.73m

Problem 5
The performance characters c of a certain centrifugal pump are
determined from experimental setup similar to the one shwn in the
figure. When the flow rate of a liquid (SG=0.9) through the pump is 120
gpm the pressure gage at (1) indicates a vacuum of 95 mm of mercury
and the pressure gage at (2) indicates a pressure of 80 kPa. the diameter
of the pipe diameter a the inlet is 110 mm and at the exit it is 55 mm.
If Zo ‐Zi = 0.5 m what is the actual head rise across the pump? Explain
how you would es mate the pump motor power requirement.
Ans: 11.5 m
solution5
Problem 6
The performance curve of certain centrifugal pump having a 9 in diameter (1 in=2.54cm) and opera ng at 1750 rpm are
determined using an experimental setup similar to the one shown in the above fig of problem 5. The following data
were obtained during a series of test in which Zo‐Zi=0 and v1 = v2, and the fluid is water
where 1gpm=6.31x10-5 m 3 /s, 1psi=6.895kPa and 1hp=745.7 W. Based on these data, show or plot how the actual
head (ha) rise, and the the pump efficiency, η, vary with the flow rate. What is the design flow rate for this pump?
It is useful to have ha‐Q pump performance curves expressed in the form of an equa on. Fit the ha‐Q data to an
equa on of the form ha=ho‐k.Q2 and compare the values of ha determined from the equa on with the experimentally
determined values ( Use excel, Matlab, etc...)
. Ans: Qdesign =6.31x10-3 m3 /s corresponds to max η=0.613 ; ha=28.66 - 1.324x10-5 .Q2
