WHAT IS
NATIONALISM
In general, nationalism refers to a strong
and frequently patriotic devotion or
loyalty to one's own nation or country.
Nationalism is a complicated and diverse
concept that can have multiple meanings and
interpretations depending on the situation.
It entails a sense of pride, identity, and
community with one's fellow citizens as
well as a conviction in the significance of
advancing and defending one's country's
interests, culture, and sovereignty.
CIVIC NATIONALISM
is founded on shared citizenship and the idea
that everyone who lives within a country's
borders can become a full member of the
country by adopting its institutions, values,
and ideals, regardless of their racial,
cultural, or religious heritage. It places a
strong emphasis on democratic values, civic
engagement, and the equality of all citizens.
EXAMPLE:
The national motto of the Philippines, "Maka-
Diyos, Maka-Tao,Makakalikasan, at Makabansa,"
embodies the idea of civic nationalism in the
country and reflects the fundamental values
and guiding principles that the Filipino
people aspire to uphold.
CULTURAL NATIONALISM
a type of nationalism where shared culture, rather than
ethnic heritage, serves to define the country.
Typically, cultural nationalists work to advance and
protect their country'sdad culture, frequently by
promoting traditional morals and the arts. Cultural
nationalists may work to strengthen a sense of national
identity by encouraging pride in the country's past and
accomplishments.
Example :
The country's rich cultural legacy, traditions, and
identity are promoted and preserved through a number
of movements and projects, which can be seen as
examples of cultural nationalism in the Philippines.
One notable instance is the promotion of "Barong
Tagalog" and "Filipiniana" dresses, two types of
traditional Filipino apparel. Additionally, Baybayin
is taught in schools in order to preserve knowledge.
ECONOMIC NATIONALISM
EXAMPLE:
The development of the Roman Empire is among
history's most well-known instances of
expansionist nationalism. One of the biggest
and most powerful empires in ancient
history, ancient Rome's empire was shaped by
its expansionist policies and military
conquests.
PAN-NATIONALISM
A type of nationalism that transcends national
boundaries to envision nations based on ethnic
background. It aims to undermine and re-draw the
boundaries of nations. This type of nationalism is
particularly popular in colonized nations where
superimposed boundaries were drawn against the will of
local ethnic groups. It tends to manifest itself as a
form of left-wing socialism due to its opposition to
colonialism and imperialism.
The Pan-African movement, which began in
the latter half of the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th centuries, is among
the most well-known instances of pan-
nationalism. Regardless of their
geographical location or colonial past,

unification, solidarity, and emancipation
of all Africans worldwide. It aims to
encourage Africans and people of African
heritage to feel a feeling of shared
identity, a sense of purpose, and to work
together.
It's crucial to remember that while nationalism
can foster a sense of pride and solidarity within
a nation, when practiced to the extreme, it can
also have unfavorable effects. Ultranationalism,
a term used to describe extreme types of
nationalism, can cause xenophobia, prejudice
against minority groups, war with other
countries, and a rejection of international
collaboration. In the contemporary world, it is
difficult to strike a balance between a strong
feeling of national identity and a dedication to
international collaboration and understanding.
