Philippine Wildlife Species Profile
1. Common name: Philippine Eagle

4. Location: They can be found in the Philippines' four major islands: Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and
Mindanao
5. Describe the animal’s habitat
Philippine eagles are found in some areas in the Philippines such as: Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and
Mindanao. Their most well-liked habitats embrace primary forests within the lowlands and at
mid-elevation.
However, most of this species' lowland habitat is being lost, primarily as a result of logging and
conversion of forest area to agricultural fields. Of course, when this occurs, the eagles can no
longer reside there. They have recently been constrained to dwelling mostly on mountain
slopes, which are typically less vulnerable since it is more difficult to log or produce crops on a
hill than in the lowlands.
6. List the animal’s principal sources of food
Philippine Eagles feed mostly on medium-sized animals such as flying lemurs, palm civets,
flying squirrels, and monkeys, earning them the term "monkey-eating eagles." Rats, snakes, tiny
deer, birds, and bats are among the other prey.

Humans are the only natural predators of Philippine Eagles. They are endangered because of
habitat degradation and hunting. Captive breeding attempts are being attempted. Humans
devastate their ecosystems by chopping down trees, depriving them of a home and a food
supply. These changes force them to relocate to locations with fewer trees and food, putting
them in danger. This has an influence on their survival since there are few safe sites for them to
breed, hunt, and mate. Unfortunately, many of the young eagles die because they do not have
enough food or safe places to live. Some eagles become targets for illegal hunting after
becoming lost in a hamlet or town.Some of them die in the water because they are unable to fly
long distances and despite the fact that laws exist, they are not taken seriously and are taken
for granted.
8. What elements in the animal’s habitat are most important for its survival?
One of the most critical components that the Philippine Eagles require is a safe refuge. When
trees in the forest are not chopped down or will plant a tree for substitute , eagles will have a
permanent nesting and hunting site . It is also used to construct their nest, which they use to
care for and provide for their young. If these trees are chopped down for personal purposes and
will not plant as a substitute, the survival and number of other animals, plants, and Philippine
Eagles would suffer.
9. What factors are threatening or endangering its survival?
The Philippine Eagle, although being the nation's national bird, is in danger owing to
deforestation, unintended capture in traps set for wild pigs, and illegal hunting by farmers in
retaliation for the animals' predation on livestock and household pets. The bulk of the lowland
forest is used for industrial purposes, including mining, pollution, and illegal poaching, all of
which pose serious threats to their habitat and force eagles to relocate to riskier locations.
People hunt many of their food sources illegally, which limits the variety of animals and plants
they may consume. The number of Philippine Eagles is declining as a result of hunting and
accidental shooting by poachers. The Philippine Eagle population will progressively dwindle and
might finally become extinct if the following human behaviors continue.
10. What steps are being taken to protect and preserve the animal?
In order to protect the eagles, we must also guard the monkeys, civets, and other creatures they
depend on for food, as well as the plants and animals that these creatures consume. We also
need to preserve the trees that the Philippine Eagles nest in in order to protect the other animals
that depend on them for food, shelter, and space. All the other plants and animals that inhabit
the area are automatically protected by the preservation of Philippine Eagles and their habitat.
To aid in the protection of this species, many foundations and groups have been established.
One of the organizations established to safeguard and preserve the Philippine Eagles, including
their forest habitats, is the Philippine Eagle Foundation in Davao City, Mindanao. Numerous
wounded and rescued eagles have been cared for by the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

peoples but also the rest of the nation's populations. The rules that have been passed should
hold those who kill and injure plant and animal habitats, such as poachers, hunters, and mining
companies.
13. Why is it important to preserve this species?
The Philippine Eagle, being the top of the food chain species, plays a critical role in
maintaining the ecosystem's delicate equilibrium. It aids in the natural regulation of species
populations and provides a protective cover for all other life forms in its domain. A healthy forest
is characterized by a large population of Philippine Eagles. This uncommon and magnificent
bird species can only be found in the Philippines. The extinction of the species would also imply
the loss of a valuable biological heritage for the entire planet.

is a sign that there is an issue with the environment, which may be brought on by a natural
disaster or human activity. Monitoring biodiversity is crucial because it serves as a sign of how
humans have affected the ecosystem.
The Earth receives many invaluable benefits thanks in large part to biodiversity. To
guarantee that future generations will inherit a healthy ecosystem, it is essential to understand
the status and trend of biodiversity.
The analysis says that increased support for ecosystem services would have a number of
positive effects and, when combined with increases in resource efficiency, might create new
avenues for economic opportunity and growth, boosting economic performance while restoring
and safeguarding the natural resources that are crucial to long-term wellness.
