Exercise 1
Julia is very old and she needs help to do some things. Write the sentences below using the causative
form, as in the example.

e.g. My nephew walks my dog.


I have my dog walked by my nephew.

1. My daughter does my shopping.


I have my shopping done by my daughter.
2. My carer cooks my meals.
I have my meals cooked by my carer.
3. A cleaner wipes the surfaces in my kitchen.
I have the surfaces wiped in my kitchen by a cleaner.
4. A cleaner does not clean the windows.
I don’t have the windows cleaned by a cleaner.
5. Last year, a technician installed a stairlift.
Last year, I had a stairlift installed by a technician.
6. Right now, a beautician is painting my nails.
Right now, I’m having my nails painted by a beautician.
7. Yesterday, a neighbour swept my yard.
Yesterday, I had my yard swept by a neighbour.
8. My son didn’t bring groceries to my house last month.
I didn’t have groceries brought to my house by my son last month.
9. A dressmaker is mending my favourite jumper at the moment.
I’m having my favourite jumper mended by a dressmaker at the moment.
10. An optician tested my eyesight last week.
I had my eyesight tested by an optician last week.

Fill in the blanks with the causative form of the verbs in brackets.

1. Joe had his tooth pulled out (his tooth / pull out) earlier today.
2. We are having a holiday home built (a holiday home / build) on the beach at the moment.
3. Did the man have the important papers destroyed (the important papers / destroy)
yesterday?
4. My dad regularly has his health assessed (his health / assess) by a doctor.
5. I did not have my hair done (hair / not do) for the wedding last week.
6. Look, he is having his photo taken (his photo / take) by journalists!
7. The chef had his restaurant reviewed (his restaurant / review) by a newspaper. The
review was very good.
8. My mum had a cake made (cake / make) for my birthday last month.
9. We had a big hole dug (big hole / dig) in the garden. Then we planted a tree in it.
10. Listen, my neighbour is having holes drilled (holes / drill) in his walls.

Exercise 3
Mr and Mrs Chan have a new kitchen. Fill in the gaps below using the causative form of the verbs in
brackets.

Mr and Mrs Chan (1) had their kitchen redecorated (their kitchen / redecorate) last year.
It looked lovely! They (2) had the tiles polished (the tiles / polish) and (3) had the floor
cleaned (the floor / clean), so everything looked very shiny. Now, to keep it clean, they
regularly (4) have the house tidied (the house / tidy) by a cleaner. They were very happy
because they (5) had a new cooker put in (a new cooker / put in), but they didn’t (6)
have the broken light fixed (the broken light / fix). Last week, they (7) had a photo
taken (a photo / take), and now they (8) are having the picture framed (the picture /

Exercise 5
Jeremy and Boris are both fathers. They are talking on the playground. Jeremy likes to do things
himself. Boris is very rich and employs a lot of people. Fill in the blanks using the causative form
when necessary.

Jeremy: My car broke down yesterday. I know a bit about cars, so I (1) fixed the
car (fix / the car) during the afternoon.

Boris: When my car breaks down, I always (2) have it repaired (repair / it) by a
garage.

Jeremy: Be careful – my hands are dirty because I (3) am painting my son’s


bedroom walls (paint / my son’s bedroom walls) at the moment.

Boris: Yuck! My wife and I (4) have our house decorated (decorate / our
house) by professionals.

Jeremy: I hope my son comes out of school soon. I (5) teach him (teach / him)
tennis after school on Tuesdays.

Boris: That’s interesting. I (6) have my children trained (train / my children) by


professional tennis coaches.

Jeremy: Lucky them! After tennis practice, I (7) cook dinner (cook / dinner) for my
children.

Boris: You must be a good cook. My wife and I usually (8) have meals prepared
