1 About the Instruction Manual


This instruction manual describes firmware version 3.2.x and its derivatives (this
means, the printed manual will not be changed when the last place of the version
number is increased e.g. in case of a firmware bug fix). It informs you about the
installation and the safe handling and use of the instrument. Make sure that the
instruction manual is easily accessible to all personnel operating the instrument.
Pay special attention to the safety instructions and warnings in the manual and on
the instrument.

CD-ROM Appendix to the Manual

The instruction manual at hand describes the most important features and
functions. Find further information about the instrument on the enclosed CD.

Reference Manual This manual on the CD-ROM contains among other things detailled descriptions
about:

• preset instrument modes and creating personal instrument modes


• measurement according to ASTM D7042 / Precision and Bias of SVM 3000
• filling options, cleaning, disassembling of the measuring cell
• drive shaft seal, drain and tube rinsing system, leak test
• complete menu description

Video Manual For your SVM 3000 additionally a video manual on CD-ROM is available. It
contains among other things short video sequences and instructions regarding
sample handling, filling, measuring and cleaning. Additionally some maintenance
work such as replacing O-rings or replacing the drive shaft seal unit is shown.
Supplementary the CD-ROM contains a spare parts list.

• Read the instruction manual at hand before using SVM 3000/G2.

• Follow all hints and instructions contained in this instruction manual to


ensure the correct use and safe functioning of SVM 3000/G2.

2.1 General Safety Instructions

2.1.1 Liability

• The instruction manual at hand does not claim to address all safety issues
associated with the use of the instrument and samples. It is your
responsibility to establish health and safety practices and determine the
applicability of regulatory limitations.

• Anton Paar GmbH only warrants the proper functioning of SVM 3000/G2 if
no adjustments have been made to the mechanics, electronics, and
firmware.

• Only use SVM 3000/G2 for the purpose described in this instruction manual.
Anton Paar GmbH is not liable for damages caused by incorrect use of SVM
3000/G2.

2.1.2 Installation and Use

• SVM 3000/G2 is not an explosion-proof instrument and therefore must not


be operated in areas with risk of explosion.

• The installation procedure should only be carried out by authorized


personnel who are familiar with the installation instructions.

• Do not use any accessories or spare parts other than those supplied or
approved by Anton Paar GmbH.

• Make sure all operators are trained to use the instrument safely and correctly
before starting any applicable operations.

• In case of damage or malfunction, do not continue operating SVM 3000/G2.


Do not operate the instrument under conditions which could result in damage
to goods and/or injuries and loss of life.

• Check SVM 3000/G2 for chemical resistance to the samples and solvents.

• Refer to Chapter 2.3, for the explanations of the safety sign ( ) on the
instrument.

2.1.3 Maintenance and Service

• The results delivered by SVM 3000/G2 not only depend on the correct
function of the instrument, but also on various other factors. We therefore
recommend to have the results checked (e.g. plausibility tested) by skilled
personnel before consequential actions are taken based on the results.

• Service and repair procedures may only be carried out by authorized


personnel or by Anton Paar GmbH.

2.1.4 Disposal

• Concerning the disposal of SVM 3000/G2, observe the legal requirements in


your country.

2.1.5 Returns

• For repairs send the cleaned SVM 3000/G2 unit to your Anton Paar
representative. Only return the instrument together with the filled out
"Malfunction Report". Find this form on the supplied CD-ROM.

• Prior to sending SVM 3000 to your representative or to Anton Paar GmbH


make sure that all sample liquids and solvents are drained off the instrument.

2.1.6 Precautions for Highly Inflammable Samples and


Solvents

• Observe and adhere to your national safety regulations for handling the
measured samples (e.g. use of safety goggles, gloves, respiratory protection
etc.).

• Only store the minimum required amount of sample, solvents and other
inflammable materials near the SVM 3000/G2.

• Do not spill sample/solvents or leave their containers uncovered.


Immediately remove spilled sample/solvents.

• Make sure that the setup location is sufficiently ventilated. The environment
of SVM 3000/G2 must be kept free of inflammable gases and vapors.

• Connect SVM 3000/G2 to the mains via a safety switch located at a safe
distance from the instrument. In an emergency, turn off the power using this
switch instead of the power switch on SVM 3000/G2.

• Supply a fire extinction unit.

• Ensure the sufficient supervision of SVM 3000/G2 during operation.

2.2 Special Safety Instructions for SVM 3000

• Do not use SVM 3000/G2 to measure fluids of the IIC group according to EN
60079-14, such as e.g. carbon disulfide, hydrogen or acetylene.

• When using the magnetic particle trap (optional accessory): The metal parts
of this device will be heated to a temperature of max. 80 °C. Do not use
sample and solvents with a boiling point lower than 80 °C. This can form
flammable gasses.

• When moving or lifting the SVM 3000 measuring assembly, hold the
SVM 3000 at the front and the rear to prevent your fingers from squeezing
between the SVM 3000 and the table. When carrying the instrument, keep it
close to your body.

• Check the chemical resistance of the materials which come into contact with
sample liquids and solvents before filling the liquids to the cells. See
Appendix B, Reference Manual (on CD-ROM).

• Prior to starting a measurement, make sure that the filling and waste hoses
and the cell connection tube are properly connected.

• To extract explosive vapors from the measuring cell area, a "suction hose"
can be connected to the "INTERNAL" inlet.

• Compressed air for drying the measuring cells must be dry, free of oil and
dust. The pressure must be limited safely to a max. pressure of 100 kPa (= 1
bar = 14.5 psi). Suitable air preparation kits are available from Anton Paar.
See Chapter 4.3 and 11, Reference Manual (on CD-ROM).

The Stabinger viscometer SVM 3000 fulfills all requirements of the ASTM
Standard D7042.

3.1 Samples to be Measured with SVM 3000

The SVM 3000 is designed to measure mainly oily substances. The following list
gives an overwiew about sample types which can be measured within the
instrument’s specifications. If you have questions regarding your sample, contact
you local Anton Paar representative.

• standard and base oils


• fresh and used lubrication oils (e.g. engine crankcase oil, gear oil, ATF ...)
• other oils (e.g. mineral oil, white oil, conservating oil, silicone oil, heat
transfer oil ...)
• hydraulic liquids (e.g. hydraulic oils, brake fluids...)
• edible oils, vegetable oils
• fuels (e.g. diesel fuel, biodiesel, jet fuel, marine fuels, gasoline ...)
• pure hydrocarbon solvents and mixtures (e.g. naphtha, toluene, hexane ...)
• heavy heating oils, bunker fuels, crude oils (treated), waxes, vacuum
distillate with a melting point of max. 80 °C or a viscosity of max. 1000 mPa·s
at 80 °C. For measuring these substances you need the Hot Filling
Attachment. See Chapter 9.2.6, Reference Manual on CD-ROM.
• Others: Glycol (e.g. antifreeze), glycerine, ...

Considering sufficient lubrication of the outer rotor bearings and the chemical
compatibility also the following sample types can be measured with restrictions
using the SVM 3000.

• polymer solutions
• aqueous solutions
• acids and bases
• other chemicals

Never try to measure samples, which harden during the time they are in the
measuring cells. This leads to costly repairs.

3.2 Operating Elements

SVM 3000 can be operated by using the 7 built-in keys (see Chapter 6.2) or an
external keyboard. The instrument can also be controlled with a PC via the PC
interface. See Appendix A, Reference Manual on CD-ROM. When pressing any
internal key, you will hear a key click. For other events like the instrument
prompting a user interaction or the measurement is valid or an error has occurred,
an acoustic signal will be emitted. Information on the acoustic signals see Chapter
12.2.3 and Appendix C, both in the Reference Manual on CD-ROM.

3.3 Interfaces

The instrument has two serial interfaces (RS232-C), and a keyboard connector
(PC-AT; DIN). The two S-BUS interfaces can be used to connect two SVM 3000
for automatic temperature adjustments and calibrations with MKT thermometers.
Where to find the interfaces on the instrument see Chapter 5.3.

4.1 Unpacking

SVM 3000/G2 was tested and packed carefully before shipment. However,
damage may occur during transport.

1. Keep the packaging material (box, foam pieces, transport protection) for
possible returns and further questions from the transport and insurance
company.

2. Check the delivery for completion by comparing the supplied parts to those
noted in the table in Chapter 4.2.

3. If a part is missing, contact your Anton Paar representative.

4. If a part is damaged, contact the transport company and your Anton Paar
representative.

5 Preparing the Instrument


Caution:
The SVM 3000 is designed for measuring oily substances (mineral oil
products, vegetable oils, fuels, lubricants). Considering sufficient lubrication of
the outer rotor bearings and of the chemical compatibility other sample types
(e.g.: aqueous samples, polymer solutions, several chemicals) can be
measured with reservation.
Hardening or significant precipitation of the sample must be avoided in any
case, as this may lead to costly repairs.
If in doubt, contact your local Anton Paar representative.

5.1 Installation Requirements

• SVM 3000 does not require any special installation conditions. The setup
location and surroundings should meet the requirements of a typical
laboratory. Place the instrument on a flat lab desk.

• To guarantee temperature stability, do not place the SVM 3000


- near a heater
- near an air conditioning unit or an open window (draughts!)
- in direct sunlight.

• Keep the instrument away from magnetic fields.

• Read the Safety Instructions in Chapter 2.

5.2 Removing the Transport Protection


1 Remove the transport protection
before switching on the instru-
ment. To do this, open the front
flap and take out the foam block
(1). Position (2) shows the key for
viscosity inlet nozzle (measuring
cell key).

5.3 Connectors, Type Plate, Power Switch

Fig. 5 - 2 and 5 - 3 show the positions of all connectors, the type plate and the
power switch.

Factory preassembled are (see Fig. 5 - 2):


• the inlet connection tube (K) between filling support (D; outer connector D1)
and density inlet nozzle (A). This simplifies filling the cells.
• the cell connection tube (J) between density outlet nozzle (B) and viscosity
inlet nozzle (F). This is for filling the U-tube and the viscosity measuring cell
simultaneously.

The fixing point (C) for the cell connection tube (J) is a thread which is directly
mounted onto the measuring cell block. It is foam-covered together with the block
for better thermal insulation. Fix the cell connection tube by inserting it securely
into the density outlet nozzle (B) and the viscosity inlet nozzle (F). Screw the fixing
screw into the fixing point (C).

5.4 Mounting the Hoses

All mentioned hoses are supplied in the accessory kit. Connectors see Fig. 5 - 2
and 5 - 3, the instrument with connected hoses is shown in Fig. 5 - 5.

The FEP hoses 250x3x2 mm have a marker ring (before the screw connector).
This ring stops the hose slipping, which is especially important for the hose end
in the waste bottle (it prevents the hose becoming immersed in the liquid in the
waste bottle).

Waste hose measuring cells:

Connect a FEP hose 250x3x2 mm (1) to the waste tube (E = viscosity outlet
nozzle in Fig. 5 - 2) and lead it to the waste bottle (2). Attach it to one of the three
holes in the lid.

Information:
The waste hose must be laid correctly otherwise a sucking effect can occur
and bubbles may be sucked into the measuring cells. Low viscous samples, in
particular, could run out of the measuring cell. Lead the waste hose so that it
runs slightly upwards into the waste bottle.

Air hose:

1. To prepare the air hose (3), cut a piece of 25 cm (10") from the supplied
silicone hose 3x5 and attach an adapter Luer cone to one end of this hose.

2. Plug the other end to the "AIR OUT" connection (I in Fig. 5 - 2).

This hose is for drying the cells (connect to D1) and the drain and tube rinsing
system (connect to D2).

Hoses of the drain and tube rinsing system (external rinsing):

The instrument is equipped with drain hoses for the drive shaft seal, further with
a system for cleaning the thermostat tube and the outer surface of the measuring
rotor and the rotor bearings. These items can be cleaned by filling the system with
solvent and drying afterwards.

1. Connect a 250 mm FEP hose (4) to the inner connection (D2) on the filling
support (D) and the RINSE IN connection (G).

2. Connect a further 250 mm FEP hose (5) to the RINSE OUT connection (H).
Attach the free end to the waste bottle (3).

Information:
After the first installation, rinse and dry the measuring cells as described in
Chapter 9 before carrying out measurements.

5.5 Connecting the Cables

All connectors are placed on the rear of the instrument see Fig. 5 - 3.

1. Plug the power cord to the mains connector (H in Fig. 5 - 3).

2. Plug the keyboard cable to the keyboard connector (E in Fig. 5 - 3); if


applicable.

3. Connect the printer to the PRINTER interface (D in Fig. 5 - 3); if applicable.

4. Connect the computer with the supplied RS-232 cable to the PC interface on
the SVM 3000 (C in Fig. 5 - 3); if applicable.

5. When using a barcode reader, refer to Chapter 17.3, Reference Manual on


CD-ROM and to the barcode reader manual.

The air density value can be seen as an indicator for the cleaning and drying
quality of the measuring cell. See Chapters 6.1 and 10, Reference Manual on
CD-ROM.

Measuring windows:

The measuring variables shown in the first three lines of the display can be
selected by the user. Measuring values can also be displayed in the first three
lines of the second measuring window (press the INFO key to switch over). In the
fourth line the sample name and the consecutive number of measurement is
displayed. The third window (measurement precision window) displays the repeat
deviations and the obtained precision. How to select an instrument mode see
Chapter 7.

6.3 Entering Data

Data (= text and numerals), e.g. sample names or reference values of a standard
oil, can be entered using an external keyboard, a barcode reader, or the built-in
keys of the instrument. Use the optional external keyboard for easy data entry.

CD-ROM.

Overwrite mode:

By default, every data field - no matter whether letters or numerals - opens in the
overwrite mode. Data can be entered here using an external keyboard or a
barcode reader. An existing line of data will be overwritten completely.

Edit mode:

To edit data using the instrument’s keys, just press ENTER once again to switch
to the "edit mode". The first sign of the data field will start to blink. Use the
ARROW keys to edit data. When you are ready, confirm with ENTER.

6.4 The State Display

The state indicator blinks in the corresponding line of the display.

FILLING The instrument is ready to be filled. This is the standard state
when no measurement is running. The motor turns at filling
speed.

MEASURING A measurement is running, the motor turns at measuring


speed.

RESULT VALID The "" shows that the display is frozen. The measurement
values are valid (RESULT VALID) and the instrument is ready
to be refilled or cleaned (FILLING).

When using the "automatic repetition" the result is indicated


as stable but not within the limits for repeat measurements.
If a mode is set to "manual control", the ">" shows that the
measuring values are valid. Press the PRINT key to
manually store and print. Press the START key to end the
measurement.
Selected If the measurement stability was at least "ultrafast", but the
precision class selected precision class was not achieved, exclamation
not achieved marks "!" blink in the state display in the first measuring
window on "RESULT VALID" and "FILLING" instead of the
diamonds "" .

ERROR No measuring results. Even the precision class "ultrafast"


was not achieved. When pressing the INFO key, the
instrument displays the error message "values not stable!".
The exclamation mark and the diamond "" blink alternately
in the fourth line of the display.

ERROR The "!" and ">" blink alternately in the 4th line of the state
No measurement display. This shows an error. To read the error message,
possible! press the INFO key. For details see Chapter 19.2, Reference
Manual on CD-ROM.

WARNING e.g.: Dependent on the instrument state, either ">" and "!" or ""
Perhaps only and "!" blink alternately in the corresponding line of the state
limited display. This shows a warning. To read the warning message,

these can be adapted to suit your own requirements in the user level

Before starting the measurement, select the desired instrument mode (see
Chapter 7) and enter a measuring temperature and a sample name.

8.1 Entering Sample Name and Measuring

Sample name:

The instrument must display the "measuring window". Press the SET key to
change to the "various settings" menu. Press ENTER to select "edit sample
name". The following screen will be displayed:
Enter the sample name (16 characters maximum)
using the optional external keyboard or a bar code
reader (overwrite mode) or by pressing ENTER again
and using the ARROW keys (edit mode). Confirm data
entry with ENTER.

Counter:

The counter (##-# in the display) cannot be deleted or overwritten. It is increased


automatically with every new measurement (up to 99, ## before the dash) or
every new repetition (up to 4, # behind the dash).
If data is stored or printed manually during a measurement by pressing the PRINT
key, the counter will not be increased.

Resetting the counter:


After confirming the sample name with ENTER, the following window comes up:
To continue with the next consecutive number, press
the ENTER or ESC key.

To reset the counter, press the ARROW DOWN key.


This starts the counter again at 1-1.

Measuring temperature:

Select the menu item "various settings - set


temperature" and press ENTER. Change the
measuring temperature and confirm with ENTER.
Temperature range: -56 °C to +105 °C / -77 °F to
+221 °F.

Information:
This menu item is only accessible if "temp. change allowed" is set to "yes"
in the "mode settings", or if the SVM 3000 is used in the user level
"administrator".

8.2 Performing Measurements

The procedure describes a measurement in an automatic mode with automatic


repetitions (M2, M4, M6, M0).

1. Ensure that the cells are clean and dry, then fill the sample (filling/cleaning
see Chapter 9).
2. Press the START key.

The motor starts up to filling speed, the state display changes from "FILLING" to
"MEASURING" and the first measuring values appear on the display. These are
unstable at first, but become more accurate as the averaging period increases.
When the values are stable, the state changes to "RESULT VALID", indicated by
the arrow. The motor slows down to filling speed. The instrument asks you to "refill
and press ENTER".

3. Refill 1 mL (at least 250 µL) from the syringe and press again the START
key.

During the measurement you can view the current repeat deviation for viscosity
and density (RDV, RDD) by pressing the INFO key twice.
If the results of the first repetition are within the limits for viscosity and density, the
state changes to "RESULT VALID", indicated by two diamonds. The motor slows
to filling speed and the display is frozen until the START key is pressed again. 
In addition the "FILLING" state is displayed. The instrument is now ready to be
refilled or to be rinsed and dried and then newly filled.

If the result is not within the limits the repeat deviation for viscosity and density will
be displayed and you are asked once more to refill.

Measuring data are automatically stored in the "data memory" and sent to the
printer port.

4. Rinse and dry the measuring cells immediately after a measurement is


completed. See Chapter 9.

Menu access during a measurement:

It is not possible to access the menu during a measurement in progress. If


settings must be changed for this measurement, it is required to abort the
measurement.

Aborting a measurement:

Entering a sample name during a measurement:

possible to change the measuring temperature, when the first determination has
become already valid (message: "access denied!").

8.3 Accessing Measurement Data

Viewing data:

1. Press the MENU key to switch to the menu "data memory" and confirm with
ENTER.

2. Select the menu item "browse" and confirm with ENTER.

3. To switch between values within a data set, use the ARROW RIGHT / LEFT
keys.

4. To browse between all data sets, use the ARROW UP / DOWN keys.

5. To exit the browser window, press ESC.

Printing data from the data memory:

Connect the optional protocol printer to the PRINTER port of SVM 3000.
Alternatively you can transfer the measuring data directly to a computer. See
Appendix A, Reference Manual on CD-ROM.

1. Press the MENU key to switch to the menu "data memory" and confirm with
ENTER.

2. Select the menu item "print data" and confirm with ENTER.

3. Select either "all new data" (prints all data sets which were not printed
before) or "starting from ..." (prints all data sets from a the date which you
can enter here) and confirm with ENTER.

If you want to abort the printout, press the ARROW UP key.

9 Filling and Cleaning the Measuring


Cells
This manual describes only the standard filling and cleaning procedure, as
needed for installation of the instrument and ordinary measurements.

More information:
 All filling options for different sample types (e.g. highly viscous oils, volatile
substances, heavy oils), separate filling of the cells (e.g. as required for
adjustment), see Chapter 9, Reference Manual on CD-ROM.

9.1 Filling

Caution:
• Before filling, check whether the wetted parts are resistant to the sample
and solvents (see Appendix B, Reference Manual on CD-ROM).
• Check also whether the wash bottle (PE) is resistant to the solvents used.
• Do not use disposable syringes with rubber plunger for petrochemical
substances. They are often chemically not resistant and tend to sucking
small bubbles.

Standard Filling Procedure:

1. Fill a (disposable) syringe bubble-free with sample. Therefore pull the


plunger out slowly and smoothly. If the sample is not sucked in with a smooth
motion, bubbles may enter the syringe.

2. Remove sucked bubbles from the syringe:

• Hold the syringe with the tip pointing upwards. The bubble rises to the top.
Remove it by carefully pushing the plunger upwards.
• For very small bubbles place the syringe with the tip in the connector for
the external rinsing. Wait until the bubbles have moved upwards to the
plunger and will not be filled into the cells.

Caution:
The filling pressure also for highly viscous samples must not exceed 1.5 bar
(22 psi) otherwise sample may pass out at the rotor bearings. This applies
also for pressing out the sample after a measurement. This pressure
corresponds to a force of approx. 20 N on the plunger of a 5 mL syringe.
An increased pressure may also lead to damage in the measuring cell. In this
case Anton Paar is not liable for damage.

3. Connect the syringe to the outer inlet


of the filling support (see Fig. 9 - 1)
and fill at least 2 mL of sample
smoothly and without excessive
pressure into the measuring cells.
Leave the syringe on the filling
support.

4. Start the motor for approx. 10 seconds


(START key). This improves the
prewetting of the measuring cells with
the sample.

5. Stop the motor with the START key.

6. Fill another 1 mL from the syringe - or at least until the sample is visible in
the waste hose. Then press START again.

This prewetting helps you achieve a better filling quality and a more precise
measuring result.

7. For the recommended repeat measurement refill another 1 mL (but a


minimum of 250 µL) from the syringe.

9.2 Rinsing and Drying the Measuring Cells

Caution:
• After measurement and cleaning the cells, make sure that samples and
solvents are disposed correctly. For details, refer to the safety information
sheet for the solvent used. These are available from the manufacturer.
• Ensure that the solvent is suitable for the sample. If there are any doubts,
perform solubility tests outside the instrument.

The cleaning procedure must be carried out immediately after each


measurement.

Have the required solvent(s) ready in the supplied wash bottles before the first
measurement is carried out.

9.2.1 Solvents

For clean oils usually a single solvent is satisfactory - for most samples you can
use cleaner’s naphtha (100/140).

Required solvent For a single solvent or a second solvent: "chemically pure" or "for synthesis". 
quality The purity of the first solvent (prewash) is not important.

Samples Solvents
Low and medium viscous oils Cleaner’s naphtha (boiling range 100/140 °C),
toluene
High viscous oils, most of all As before, or a combination of two solvents may
heavy oils and crude oils be more effective; e.g. 1st kerosene + 2nd
cleaner’s naphtha.
Samples which are not soluble e.g.: 1st toluene/xylene for solving the sample and
in cleaner’s naphtha (some rinsing it out of the cells; 2nd cleaner’s naphtha for
kinds of lube oils, some heavy removing the residues from solvent 1 and to
oils and crude oils) accelerate drying the cells.

9.2.2 Cleaning the Measuring Cells

Precleaning:

Caution:
When pushing out the sample after a measurement, the pressure must not
exceed 1.5 bar (22 psi). This pressure corresponds to a force of approx. 20 N
on the plunger of a 5 mL syringe. An increased pressure may also lead to
damage in the measuring cell. In this case Anton Paar is not liable for damage.

Push out the sample from the cells using the empty syringe. Low viscous oils can
be sucked back from the cells with the syringe. You can also connect the air hose
to the filling adapter and switch on the air pump to push out the sample.

Rinsing out the sample and drying the cells:

1. Attach the tip of the wash bottle to the connector D1 on the filling support.
2. Only fill the cells with solvent until you can see 2 - 3 cm of solvent in the
waste hose (leading upwards) but not so much that the solvent reaches the
highest point in the waste hose. This prevents the solvent running out of the
cells (suction effect) when removing the tip.
3. Squeeze the wash bottle this way, that the liquid in the waste hose comes to
a standstill.
4. Now detach the wash bottle and at the same time stop squeezing it. This
prevents sucking contaminated solvent back into the bottle. Check whether
the liquid is still not in motion.
5. Allow the motor to run on measuring speed for approx. 10 seconds. This
improves the cleaning action.
6. If required, repeat this procedure a few times.

7. To dry the cells attach the air hose to the connector D1 on the filling adapter
(D) and press the PUMP key.

When using two solvents, remove the residues of solvent 1 by blowing air through
the cells for some seconds using the air pump.

Information:
The density value for a filled cell is higher than 0.6 g/cm³.
The density value for a clean and dry cell is approx. 0.0015 ± 0.0005 g/cm³;
this depends on temperature, air pressure and waiting time after drying.

9.2.3 Drain and Tube Rinsing System (External Rinsing)

The SVM 3000 is equipped with an additional drain and tube rinsing system
("external rinsing"). This allows to draw away liquids in case of leaks, further to
rinse the rotor bearings, the outer surface of the measuring rotor, the thermostat
tube and the drive shaft seals.

1. To perform such a rinsing cycle fill solvent into the inner connector (D2 in Fig.
5 - 5) on the filling adapter until it can be seen in the waste hose fixed on the
RINSE OUT connector.
2. Start the motor for approx. 10 seconds. This improves the cleaning action on
the outer surface of the measuring rotor.
3. Refill solvent until the solvent in the outlet becomes clear.
4. For drying connect the air hose to the connector D2 on the filling adapter (D)
and switch on the air pump.

Caution:
The drain and tube rinsing cycle is no substitute for the regular disassembly of
the viscosity measuring cell for cleaning and checking of all parts.

9.3 Disassembling the Viscosity Measuring Cell

The viscosity measuring cell contains a measuring rotor which is made of two
rotors and two rotor bearing rings. The outer rotor is a hastelloy tube and inside
this tube is a sensitive titanium rotor. Disassemble the measuring rotor if the usual
rinsing and drying procedure is not sufficient.

Caution:
• The SVM 3000 should only be opened by trained personnel as it
contains very sensitive components. The drive shaft can be bent very
easily. The inner titanium rotor has a very thin wall. Take care when
cleaning.
• Anton Paar GmbH is not liable for components which have been handled
incorrectly.

Working steps:

The motor must turn on filling speed, the instrument stays switched on.

1. Disconnect the cell connection tube (J in Fig. 5 - 2) and unscrew the waste
hose from the viscosity outlet nozzle.
2. Open the front flap.

3. Screw out the viscosity inlet nozzle


on the outside right of the
instrument (Fig. 9 - 2) using the
key for viscosity inlet nozzle (2 in
Fig. 9 - 3).

5. Push the measuring rotor out of the


thermostat tube from the inside
using a piece of silicone hose (Fig.
9 - 4).

Warning:
The measuring rotor could still be hot from the last measurement. To prevent
injury, make sure that the temperature of the measuring cell has decreased
before removing or disassembling the measuring rotor.

6. Clean the thermostat tube carefully


with the 7 mm brush dipped in
solvent. Put the air hose into the
thermostat tube and dry it with the
air pump (Fig. 9 - 5). 

Caution:
Make sure that the drive unit is pushed back to the left as far as it will go so
that the drive shaft cannot be damaged by the brush.

7. Remove the rotor bearing rings (1)

8. Carefully push the titanium rotor out of the hastelloy rotor using the 5 mm
cleaning brush.

Caution:
The titanium rotor has a very thin wall and can easily be damaged. Do not use
tools such as pliers or tweezers to handle the rotor. Do not use polishing
agents, abrasive paper or other cleaning aids other than the supplied brushes
and a soft cleaning paper.
If dried sample residues cannot be removed, place the titanium rotor in a
suitable solvent. If the titanium rotor is damaged mechanically during cleaning,
check the adjustment of the instrument with a control measurement.

9. Clean the hastelloy rotor carefully


with the 5 mm brush and solvent
(Fig. 9 - 7). Rinse and dry it.

10. Wipe the other components clean with lint-free paper dipped in solvent. Dry
all parts.

11. Lubricate the O-rings to make them slide easier. The rotor bearing rings have
one and two grooves. The hastelloy rotor has one end with one locating key
and one end with two locating keys. This design should prevent wrong
assembling.
12. Push the titanium rotor into the hastelloy rotor. The marking on the titanium
rotor must point into direction of the arrow on the hastelloy rotor. If the
titanium rotor is inserted in wrong direction, this may lead to measuring
deviations.
13. Swivel the unlock lever for the motor into the instrument to the end stop. This
engages the drive unit to the right.
14. Insert the measuring rotor in direction of the arrow into the thermostat tube.
15. Screw in the viscosity inlet nozzle carefully.

Checking the viscosity cell for leak tightness:

16. Close the viscosity inlet nozzle with a Luer plug and screw an adapter Luer
UNF into the waste tube.
17. Fill the supplied glass syringe or a new 5 mL disposable syringe up to the
4 mL mark with air.
18. Connect the syringe to the adapter Luer UNF.
19. Press in the plunger of the syringe up to the 1 mL mark and let it move back
out again. The plunger must move back to at least the 2 mL mark. Repeat
the procedure several times. The plunger must return to the almost same
position as it reached the first time.
20. Remove the Luer plug and the adapter Luer-UNF and mount again the cell
connection tube.

10 Menu Structure
To ease operating the instrument for routine jobs, in the lowest user level
"operator" many functions are hidden. In the user level "administrator" the
instrument modes can be adapted to the requirements of the customer and further
settings can be done. In the following a short description of the user level
"operator" is given. Other than the temperature, no instrument settings can be
changed.

Information:
The option of changing the temperature setting can be deactivated in the
menu "mode settings - measuring temp. - temp. changes allowed". This
can only be carried out at the "administrator" level.

"data memory" 
Contains the chronologically stored measuring data sets. Data is stored
automatically and always when printed (when pressing the PRINT key.)

"browse"
Here you can view the data.

ARROW UP/DOWN:
Browse between the data sets.
ARROW RIGHT/LEFT:
Browse between the measuring values of one data set.

The letters at the end of the date and time field show whether the data set
has been read out by a computer (f/F="fetched") or if it has been printed
out (p/P ="printed"). Capital letters mean "Yes", small letters mean "No".

The "printed" (P) state can be reset in "data memory - browse" for the
current data set by pressing ENTER. This allows a second printout. The
command "reset data" can be sent from a PC via the serial interface (PC)
to reset all stored data sets to the state "f" and "p".

"print data"
The results in an instrument mode are printed out according to the date,
beginning with the oldest measuring value.

"all new data"


This prints all data which were not printed before from the data memory .

"starting from - yyyy mm dd hh:mm:ss"


Enter a date (and a time) from which the printout should start. This
allows printing of selected data also more than once without resetting
the print status.


The number in the last line of the display is the number
of the memory content which is being printed at that
time (0 to 383).

Information:
Make sure there is enough paper in the printer. For results from max. 384
measurements, each with up to 16 lines (= max. 6144 lines), you would require
approx. 24 m of paper - this is nearly a third of a new paper roll!

"calibration"
Calibration menu. The settings cannot be changed in the level "operator". 
To perform calibration measurements refer to Chapter 14, Reference Manual on
CD-ROM. The calibration reminder is set to 0 days by default (deactivated).

"new calibration"
Select this menu to perform calibration measurements.

"viscosity & density"


Starts the viscosity and density calibration by pressing ENTER.
In the user level "operator", a calibration can be saved only. To apply the
calibration correction, the administrator password is required (see
Chapter 14.2, Reference Manual on CD-ROM).

"temperature"
Starts the temperature calibration by pressing ENTER.

"print cal. history"


The data from these measurements are stored in the calibration history and
can be printed out here. The instrument can store max. 128 calibrations.
When the memory is full, the oldest calibration will be overwritten.

"starting from - yyyy:mm:dd hh:mm:ss"


Enter a date from which the printout should be started. Default: The first
of the current month, in the previous year (approx. one year).

"check measurement"
Automatic viscosity and density verification measurement at maximum 5
temperature points. The settings cannot be changed in the level "operator". 
To perform a check measurement refer to Chapter 15, Reference Manual on CD-
ROM.

"start check measurement"


Starts the verification measurement.

"print results"
Prints the results of the last performed verification measurement. 

"measuring window"
Press ENTER to return to the measuring window.
