Course Outline

GE 19: The Great Books


First Semester School Year 2023-2024

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the Western cannon of literature,


philosophy, and history. Students will read and discuss some of the most influential
works of these disciplines from ancient Greece and Rome to the present day. The goal
of the course is to help students develop their critical thinking skills, their appreciation of
different cultures and perspectives and their understanding of the human condition.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Read critically and analyse complex texts.


2. Demonstrate understanding of different literary genres, concepts, and
terms.
3. Understand the historical context and cultural influences of different
works of literature.
4. Make inferences and draw conclusions from texts.
5. Communicate their ideas effectively in writing and discussion.
6. Appreciate the complexity of the human condition and the diversity of
human experience.
7. Examine the contemporary world through the lens of different literary
texts.
8. Reflect critically on shared concerns and values.
