PROBLEM SET Number 6

Construct a Hypothesis Testing in each of the following:

1. Given:
µ = 35.2 millgal
µ o = 33.6 millgal
n = 40
σ = 4.2
Level of significance: 0.05

Solution: Since the sample size is greater than 30, then use Z – test
Ho – µ = 35.2
Hn – µ <35.2
 This is one – tailed test
 Ztabular value at 0.05 = ∞ = 0.05
= ±1.645
(~x−µ ) √ n
 Zcomputed =
σ
( 33.6−35.2 ) √ 40
=
4.2
= 2.41
 Decision: Since the Zcomputed value is greater than the Ztabular value at 0.05
level of significance, hence we reject Ho and accept Hn.
 Therefore the claim of the engineering department about the fuel
consumption rate of the model at 0.05 level of significance is not true.
Since is <35.2 mill/gal.
2. Given:
µ = 7 oz
µ o = 7.15 oz
n = 16
SD = 0.12 oz

Level of significance = 0.05

Solution: Sample size <30, use of T - test

Ho – µ = 7
Hn – µ >7

 1 – tailed test
 T – tabular value at 0.05 and af = 15 (n - 1)
T – tabular value = 1.753

(~x−µ ) √ n
 T – computed =
s
( 7.15−7 ) √ 16
¿
s 0.12
=5
 Decision: Since the T – computed value is greater than the T – tabular
value at 0.05 level of significance , hence we reject Ho and accept Ha.
|t computed value|>|T tabular value|
 Therefore, the average owner of beverages cup being discharged by the
dispensing machine is greater that 7oz per cup.

3. Given:
µ = 55 m3
µ o = 53 m3
n = 64
SD = 5 m3

Level of significance = 0.01

Solution: Sample size >330, use Z – test

Ho: µ = 55 m3
Ha: µ o = 53 m3

 One – tailed test

 Z – tabular value at 0.01 = ± 2.33
(~x−µ ) √ n
 Z – computed =
σ
~
( x 55−53 ) √64
=
σ5
= 3.2
 Conclusion: |Z computed value|>|Z tabular value|
: reject Ho and accept Ha
 Therefore, the claim average monthly water consumption is not true.
Hence, the water consumption is greater than 53 m3.
4. Given:
µ = >40
µ o = 40.8
n = 50
SD = 2.14

Solution: Since the sample size >30, use Z test

Ho: µ = >40
Ha: µ o ≠ >40
 2 – tailed test
0.05
Level of significance = = 0.025
2
Z computed = 1.96
 Since the population mean is higher than 40, assume that the mean are 41,
42… since it is stated in the problem that the population mean is higher
than 40.

= 0. 580
 Decision: |Z computed value|<|Z tabular value|, hence accept the Ho and
reject Ha.
 : the claim of AB Box video game on the customer satisfaction
rating is true which is higher than 40. Since the mean is 40.8
