Exercise 5B

1. When loaded with bricks, a lorry has a mass of 11.600 kg . If the mass of the bricks is three
times that of the empty lorry, find the mass of the brick.
Answer:
weight of empty lorry = x kg.
mass of bricks = 3x
Total mass of lorry = 11600 kg
x + 3x = 11600
4x = 11600
x = 2900
therefore mass of empty lorry is 2900 kg.
mass of bricks = 3x
= 3 * 2900
= 8700 kg
thus mass of bricks is 8700 kg.
2. The sum of 4 consecutive odd numbers is 56. Find the greatest of 4 numbers.
Answer:
Let the four consecutive numbers be x , x + 2, x + 4, and x + 6 respectively.
According to the question ;
x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 = 56
⇒ 4x + 12 = 56
⇒ 4x = 56 - 12
⇒ 4x = 44
⇒ x = 44 / 4
⇒ x = 11
Therefore, the four consecutive numbers are:
• x = 11
• x + 2 = 11 + 2 = 13
• x + 4 = 11 + 4 = 15
• x + 6 = 11 + 6 = 17
Hence, out of these numbers 17 is the greatest number.
3. Devi is 4 years older than Siti and Yi Hao is 2 years younger than Siti. If the sum of their
age is 47, find their respective ages.
Answer:
Step-by-step explanation:
Devi=4+Siti ....(1)
Yihao=Siti-2 (2)
Devi+Siti+Yihao=47
Making use of (1) and (2)
Siti+4 + Siti -2 +Siti=47
3Siti=45
Siti =15
Devi=19
Yihao=13
4. If a number is tripled, it gives the same result as when 28 is added to it. Find the number.
Answer:
Find the number :
3 x = x + 28
3 x - x = 28 => 2 x = 28 => x = 14
therefore , the required number is 14 .
verify : when x = 14
3 x = x + 28
3 × 14 = 14 + 28
42 = 42
L.H.S = R.H.S
hence, the required number is 14.
5. A travel agency is planning for a holiday for a group of people. The agency receives the
quotations from two couches companies Maya express and great Holliday, Maya Express
charges 15$ for each person while Great Holiday charges $12 per person and separate fee
of 84$. If the total amount charged by each company is the same, find the number of people
going on holiday.
Answer:
Step-by-step explanation:
Let the number of people be x
According to Question:
15x = 84 + 12x
15x - 12x = 84
3x = 84
x = 84/3
x = 28
Hence, the number of people going on a holiday is 28
6. The sum of two numbers one of which is two third, is 45. Find the smallest number.
Answer:

Let larger number = x and smaller number =

To find, the smaller number = ?

According to question,

∴ Smaller number

Hence, the smaller number is 18.

7. When a number x is multiplied by 4 then subtract from 68, the result obtained is the same
as three times the sum of x and 4. Find x
Answer:
all the number x. Then we can write and solve...
68 - 4x = 3(x + 4)
68 - 4x = 3x + 12
Now subtract 12 and add 4x to both sides...we get
56 = 7x and
x=8
8. In a school the number of boys who play soccer is 3 times as much as the number of boys
who play badminton. If 12 boys who play soccer play badminton instead, the number of
boys who play each of these sports would be the same. Find the number of boys who play
badminton
Answer:

In a school the number of boys who play soccer is 3 times as much as the number of boys
who play badminton.

(1)

If 12 boys who play soccer play badminton instead,the number of boys who play each of
these sports would be the same.

i.e.

[From (1)]

9. A man is six times as old as his son. Twenty years later, the man will be twice as old as his
son. Find the age of the man when his son was born.
Answer:
6x + x = 2x + x +20
7x = 3x +20. subtract from each side the unknown own variable x
4x=20. X=5
Son 5 now and 25 future
Dad 30 now and 50 future
Prove it:
6(5) + (5) = 2(5) + (5)+20
30+5=10+5+20 ; 35=35.
PAST AND FUTURE ALIGN
30 YRS MINUS SONS AGE OF 5 YRS = 25 YEARS
THE DAD WAS 25 WHEN JUNIOR WAS BORN
10. A mooncake with one egg yolk. The cost of 6 mooncakes with two egg yolks and 5
mooncakes with one egg yolk is $130.80. Find the cost of a mooncake with two egg yolks.
Answer:
Mooncake with one= x
Mooncake with two =y
From problem, y=x+2
6y+5x=130.80.
6(x+2)+5x=130.80
6x+12+5x=130.80
11x=130.80-12
x=10.8
y=x+2=12.8
11. Albert has 12 more 10 cents coin than 20 cents coin. The total value of his coins is$5.40.
Find the total number of coins he has.
Answer:
10 (y + 12) + 20y = 540
10y + 120 + 20y = 540
10y + 20y = 540 - 120
30y = 420
y =
= 14
as we know the value of y which is 14 we can subtitute it into equation 1 to get x
x = y + 12
= 14 + 12
= 26
So Albert has 26 coins of 10 cents and 14 coins of 20 cents, which is 40 coins in total
12. Li Ting cycles the first 350 km of a 470 km journey at a certain average speed and the
remaining distance at an average speed that is 15 km/h less than that for the first part of the
journey. If the time taken for her to travel each part of her journey is the same, find the
average speed for the second part of her journey.
Answer:
Let "x" be the average speed during 1st part of the journey, thn
(x-15) be the average speed during other part of the journey.
Time Taken for 1st Part of Journey = 350 / x = 350/x hrs and
Time Taken for the 2nd part = (470-350) / (x-15) = 120 / (x-15) hrs
Since time taken for both the journeys therefore,
350 / x = 120 / (x-15)
350(x-15) = 120x
350x-5250 = 120x
350x-120x = 5250
230x = 5250
x = 5250/230
x = 525/23 = 22.83 km/hrs
