A (0; 0) and B (8; 4) are vertices of a triangle ABC. If the area of the triangle is 20 units 2
and ABC = 30o. Show that the co-ordinates of vertex are related by the equation:

x2 – 16x + y2 - 8y = 0. (5 marks)

i. Show that the area of the template can be obtained from the formula

A = ½ x2 + 8x (5 marks)

ii. If the area A = 48 cm2, find a logical value of x. (5 marks)

b. The weight of a metre of steel is three times the weight of a metre of wood and a
metre of steel weighs 4 kg more than a metre of wood. Find the weight of a metre of
wood and steel respectively. (5 marks)

The diagram shows a rectangle ABCD and an isosceles triangle CDE.

a. If the composite shape is rotated 360o about the x-axis, use Pappus theorem to
evaluate the volume of the solid formed (8 marks)
b. Calculate also the volume of the solid formed when the triangle part is rotated
about the line x = 6.5. (7 marks)

b. Use Simpson’s rule to estimate the same area in (a) with six intervals. (8 marks)

A function is given by f(x) = -x2 + 6x - 5

a. Find the points where the function cuts the x-axis (4 marks)

b. Calculate the co-ordinates of the turning point of the function (3 marks)

c. Calculate the exact value of the area bounded by the curve and the x-axis. (4 marks)

d. Find also the volume formed by rotating this area 360 o about the x-axis. (4 marks)
