LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 9

UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST

OBJECTIVES
This test aims to determine the relationship between moisture content and dry density using the
specified comparative effort. Compactive effort is the amount of mechanical energy applied to
soil to obtain the required standard. It also aims to determine the compressive strength of the soil
sample after compaction using Unconfined Compressive Testing Machine.

STANDARD REFERENCE
ASTM D 2166 – Standard Test Method for Unconfined Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soil
ASTM D 698 – Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction Characteristics of Soil Using
Standard Effort (12,400 ft-lbs/ft3 (600 KN-m/m3)
ASTM D 1557 – Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction Characteristics of Soil
Using Standard Effort (56,000 ft-lbs/ft3 (2,700KN-m/m3)

4" Diameter Mold, Metal Rammer, Extruder, Balance, Mixing Pan, Trowel, #4 Sieve, Pan
Collector & Pan Cover, Unconfined Compression Machine, Graduated Cylinder

PROCEDURE
1. Prepare all the materials needed.
2. Measure the mass of the proctor mold, mixing pan and moisture can.
3. Dry the moist soil using the stove. After drying, use the number 4 sieve to eliminate
larger pieces of soil/stone.
4. Put the collected soil to the mixing pan and weigh it.
5. Given the weight/mass of the dried soil, compute the amount of water to be mixed to the
soil using the formula:
10 𝑥 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙
𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 =
100
6. Pour the water to the soil and mix it well until the water is distributed equally to the soil.
7. Put the wetted soil to the proctor mold into five equal parts. Before filling the next part,
use the metal rammer to compact the soil. Simultaneously use 25 blows to the first five
parts and 19 blows to the last fillings until it reaches the topmost part of the proctor mold.
Weigh the proctor with compacted soil.
8. Extrude the soil from the proctor mold using the extruder. Make sure that both end
surfaces are flat.
9. Measure the diameter of the extruded soil and the height. Use the diameter of the
extruded soil to find its cross-sectional area.
10. Set up the Unconfined Compressive Testing Machine.
11. Place the extruded soil in the testing machine and test it.
12. Wait until the compressive strength of the extruded soil drops and save the data collected.
