Tomato

The major tomato growing states are Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and West Bengal. In Tamil Nadu, Krishnagiri,
Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruppur, Theni and Dindigul district are the major cultivation
pockets for tomato. As per the trade sources apart from the local arrivals,
neighboring states such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have significant
contribution to meet our local demands. At present in Coimbatore wholesale
market the tomato arrivals are very high from surrounding villages especially
Semmedu, Kinathukadavu, Thondamuthur, Nachipalayam, Alandurai. During the
North East monsoon, Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu has received adequate
rainfall which increased the area under tomato cultivation. Karnataka also received
adequate rainfall which is favorable for tomato cultivation.

Brinjal

Brinjal is largely cultivated during winter and summer months. In Tamil

Nadu, the major brinjal growing districts are Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul,
Tiruvannamalai and Vellore. As per trade sources, current arrivals are coming from
Natchipalayam, Alandurai, Theni, Hosur and Cumbum. Currently, Coimbatore
market is getting adequate arrivals from Tamil Nadu and Mysore district of
Karnataka.

In Tamil Nadu, major cultivation season for bhendi is February (Thai
pattam) and June to August (Adi pattam). It is largely grown in Thalaivasal and
Magudanchavadi blocks of Salem, Karamadai, Periyanayakkanpalayam and
Thondamuthur blocks of Coimbatore, Andipatti block of Theni and Vaiyampatti
block of Trichy district. Normally, bhendi fetches maximum price during January-
February months in a year. As per the trade sources, most of bhendi arrivals are
coming from Hosur, Pollachi and Udumalpet to Coimbatore.

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for
Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University
analyzed the past 12 years prices of tomato, brinjal and bhendi that prevailed in
Oddanchathiram, Trichy and Coimbatore Uzhavar shandies. As per the results of
the analysis, the farm gate price of good quality tomato during harvest would be
around Rs.18-20 per kg. Farm gate prices of good quality brinjal will rule around
Rs. 28-30 per kg and bhendi will rule around Rs. 23-25 per kg respectively. Hence,
farmers are advised to take up sowing decision accordingly.
