Introduction
Mechatronics engineering is a discipline that merges mechanics, electronics and computing to design
and develop intelligent automated systems. In this introduction, we will explore the foundations of this
exciting area of engineering, its importance today, and its impact on various industrial fields. From
autonomous robots to advanced control systems, mechatronics plays a crucial role in automating
processes and creating innovative solutions. Throughout this conversation, we will explore the key
concepts and exciting applications of mechatronics engineering.
Origin of mechatronics
The history of mechatronics begins with the need to create machines or devices with a single purpose
“To facilitate a boring, complex or dangerous task” such as automatic machines, robots and
programs.
The evolution of mechatronics makes it possible to create and manipulate remote mechanisms and
operations, progressively adding micro-sensors and micro actuators. In this way, it becomes a set of
engineering in which all its functions are used in a single product, turning it into a broader and more
utilitarian area for the development and comfort of human life.
George Devol, the creator of industrial robotics.
In 1948, the first robotic arm emerged, a tool that today dominates vehicle assembly lines.
He was interested in designing a machine that was easy to operate and applied for the first robotics
patents in 1954 (granted until 1961). The first company to produce a robot was Unimation (Universal
Automatic), founded by Devol and Joseph F. Engelberger in 1956, and was based on Devol's original
patents. Unimation robots were also called programmable transfer machines, since their main use at
first was to transfer objects from one point to another, less than three meters away. Mechatronics
today
AIM:
Automate machinery: this is how it is made agile, productive and reliable.
Creation of intelligent products that, above all, respond to the needs of human beings.
Harmonize mechanical and electronic components (until now mechanics and electronics did not use
the same terms, which made the manufacturing or repair processes of different equipment difficult).
The main industries that use mechatronics are:
Companies in the automation industry: companies that use computerized and electromechanical
systems or elements to control machinery or industrial processes.
Mechatronics engineering is applied to various fields and sectors that require intelligent and
automated systems. Some examples of where mechatronics engineering is applied are:
Technology in the home, such as washing machines, televisions, and other smart appliances that
process information and have electronic sensors. Automotive mechanics, such as scanners that
detect faults in vehicles or control and security systems. Mechanical games, such as roller coasters,
simulators or animatronic robots. Civil construction, such as machines used to lift, drill or transport
materials.
Factories and industries, such as industrial robots, automation systems, artificial intelligence or
advanced manufacturing. Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices that integrate electronic,
mechanical and computer components. Medicine, such as medical implants, diagnostic equipment, or
bionic prostheses. Mining, such as autonomous vehicles, detection sensors or drilling systems.
The pharmaceutical industry, such as dosing systems, controlled release devices or analysis
equipment.
Conclusion
Its importance lies in its ability to improve efficiency in industrial production, facilitate daily life through
smart devices, and address complex challenges in fields such as medicine, space exploration and
robotics. Mechatronics allows the creation of innovative solutions and the improvement of quality of
life, while driving technological progress and competitiveness in the industry. As technology
advances, mechatronics engineering will continue to be critical to addressing global challenges and
making automation and artificial intelligence a reality in a variety of applications. Its future is promising
and its importance will only continue to grow in the modern world
