Subject: CHEMISTRY 1/1st Year ST (2023/2024)/ SERIES OF EXERCISES N° -I-/ (FUNDAMENTAL NOTIONS)
Matter, Mixture, Pure body, Atom, Molecule, Mole, Avogadro's number, atomic mass, Molar mass, atomic mass unit
(amu).
Exercise 02/ Consider the following substances: Oxygen (O2), Silver (Ag), cooking salt (NaCl), mineral water, cow’s
milk, sea water, oil-water, blood, water with sugar and water-sand.
a- Indicate those which are in the pure state and in the mixed state.
b- Give the substance which are simple and those which are composed
c- Classify them into homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures by presenting the number of phases.
Exercise 03/ That is the following unit symbols: A°, atm, °C, cal, cm, cm3, dcm3, g, h, j, K, kg, km, l, m, m3, mg, ml,
mmHg, mn, Pa, s, nm.
1. Complete the following table;
Symbol Name of the unit Physical parameter
Exercise 04/ An atom of Iron (Fe) has a mass m = 9,298.10-23 g. Calculate the number of Iron atoms present in a
sample of 5,7 g. Deduce the corresponding amount of matter.
Exercise 05/ a) Calculate in grams the mass of one mole of each of the following compounds:
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), glucose (C6H12O6).
b) What is the mass of a molecule of these compounds?
We give the atomic masses: MCa = 40,08; MS = 32,06; MH = 1,01; MO = 16,00; MC: 12,01.
Exercise 07/ A tablet of vitamin C (500) contains 500 mg of ascorbic acid (C6H8O6).
1) Calculate the molecular mass of vitamin C.
2) How much ascorbic acid material is contained in this tablet.
3) This effervescent tablet is placed in a 12 ml glass of water. Calculate the molar concentration
of the vitamin C solution.
4) How many vitamin C molecules are in this solution?
5) How many water molecules are in this 12 ml solution?

Exercise 08/ Two compounds consisting of Tin and Oxygen each contain 21,23% and 11,88% oxygen respectively.
Exercise 09/ 40 ml of a concentrated solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) containing 17,61 g of pure HCl. Determine
for this solution the normality, the number of gram equivalents, the molarity, the molality and the mass percentage of
HCl.
Exercise 10/ Using the law of conservation of matter. Balance the following reaction: Na H 2 O NaOH H 2
