ESSAY #1

1. Why is it important to care for older adults?

The most crucial task is to care for elderly patients because
of the aging population and their different healthcare needs. It
needs a high level of understanding, a huge amount of sensitivity,
and a commitment to delivering exceptional care that is
comprehensive to ensure older patients' well-being. It's important
to remember that elderly persons are frequently more prone to harm
both physically and emotionally due to various factors like
fragility, impaired vision, weakened body, cognitive impairment,
and even hopelessness. Additionally, they frequently experience a
variety of chronic ailments and complex medical issues, which is
expected given their old age. Geriatric patients require holistic
care, which implies that in addition to ensuring their physical
health, their social, emotional, and mental aspects needs must
also be satisfied. They may require individualized care or
interventions targeted to their particular needs. Because of this,
it is necessary to take extra care of older adults. As nurses, we
are responsible for upholding their privileges, autonomy, and
security and ensuring they receive the highest regard and
encouragement they deserve to help with their health.

2. What is your role as a nurse in caring for older

adults?
To effectively care for older patients, nurses should
carefully understand their patient’s situation/condition. We must
understand their behavioral, psychological, and physical well-
being to see through the things that we need to know. Among those
vital roles needed are; keeping them safe, preventing falls,
avoiding exposure to potential dangers, alleviating pain or
suffering, and providing mental health support and encouragement,
which are essential components of caring. We also serve as health
educators for both patients and their families, to ensure that
older people receive an appropriate understanding of their
treatments to improve their general health regardless of the age
bracket they belong to. Moreover, it's also our responsibility to
offer preventive care and advice on healthy aging including the
right nutrition for them or age-appropriate activities.
Nurses assist patients and their families in making educated
decisions regarding their healthcare, especially those pertaining
to different levels of care planning to ensure that everything
they do is equipped with appropriate guidance and adequate
knowledge.

3. What are the ways to take extremely good care of
elderly adults or patients?
Elderly people or patients necessitate particularly good
care, which calls for a thorough and sympathetic approach, together
with a well-built rapport. The three most important aspects for me
as a student nurse of care for older adults are safety or security,
respect, and mental encouragement because that's what the elderly
need the most. Sincere empathy and understanding of their points
of view are crucial for healthcare professionals not just for
nurses to comprehend and handle each patient's care needs,
concerns, or opinions. It's also essential to encourage autonomy
while providing support when it's required and to communicate
openly with both the patient and the health provider. Supporting
patients emotionally, and educating them adequately about the
situation with the active participation of their families, about
care planning are all critical in creating high-quality care for
them. The most effective treatment, in a nutshell, combines medical
knowledge with empathy, respect for their autonomy, and a
dedication to improving their general well-being and quality of
life. I do believe that nothing is more important than empathy for
another human being's suffering.

4. What is the level of care for older adults?

In terms of older adults, the level of care must be very
specific or individualized, and it must be thoroughly modified and
examined from case to case in order to ensure that each older
patient receives the best care possible to help them relieve any
pain, discomfort, or even suffering. As we frequently point out,
older adults are listed among those vulnerable in the population.
That being said, the degree of care that each older adult must
receive from their healthcare provider must also involve
compassion, empathy, and sympathy and not just the set
of medications and treatments that their doctor has recommended.
Nurses and other medical personnel ought to provide extra care,
and by extra care, we mean care that goes above and beyond standard
care. As I experienced previously in our duty, taking care of older
adults requires our understanding of not just what their diseases
are, but what they are experiencing personally. I’ve learned to
extend a helping hand not because they ask me to, but because it
is my duty and I have the ability to help them. It also involves
a sacrifice, and a dedication to helping older adults because they
are unable to do some things on their own. Personally, I think we
should learn to have patience because it’s the point where they
need us the most.
