4. During an eyesight test, an optician test card is placed 0.8 m behind Peter’s eye as shown
in Figure 4.1. The top of the card is 2 m above the floor. Peter is asked to read the letter on
the test card through a plane mirror 1.5 m in front of his eye. His eye is 1.4 m above the
floor.

Figure 4.1
(a) Write down the horizontal distance between the image of the optician test card and
Peter’s eyes. Hence state an advantage of installing a plane mirror in the testing room.
(2 marks)
(b) Suppose Peter can just see the entire optician test card in the mirror.

its height and its distance from the mirror in your sketch. (2 marks)
(ii) Sketch, in Figure 4.1, how a ray from the top of the test card enters Peter’s eyes
after reflection by the mirror. Your sketch should show the relation between the
ray and the image of the card in (b)(i). (2 marks)
(iii) Find the height of the top of the mirror from the floor. You are advised to label
your diagram appropriately for you to present your calculations. (2 marks)
(c) A student makes the following claim. “Since it is hard to see the image of the letter on
the test card, the image of the letter is smaller than the actual letter on the card.”
Comment on the student’s statement. (2 marks)
(d) Peter now sits closer to the mirror and the new position of his eye is indicated by the
cross “×” in Figure 4.1. Show that Peter will still see the top of the optician test card
by sketching one appropriate ray in Figure 4.1 on the answer sheet. Label the ray as
