CPI inflation stood at 6.83% (7.44%). Inflation is expected to moderate gradually in 2HFY24E.
Growth: India’s real GDP (at market prices) grew by 7.8% YoY in the June-23 quarter (Q1FY24) and by 7.2% YoY in FY23. Capital formation growth stood at 8% for Q1FY24. Going forward, consensus has upgraded
estimates to 6% to 7% GDP growth for FY24.
India’s Q1FY24 current account balance registered a deficit of US$ 8.7bn (1.07% of GDP) from a deficit of US$17.9bn (2.12% of GDP) in Q1FY23. The deficit represents better manufacturing/services exports from India.
India’s fiscal deficit was kept in check at 6.4% in FY2023 with higher-than-estimated tax revenues. FY24 deficit is expected at around 5.9%.
FY23 net household financial savings rate stood at 5.1% of GDP (7.2% for FY22). The same ratio had moved higher during the pandemic period to 12% in FY21 compared to 7.7% in FY20.
Market Outlook
India seems to always be in an election mode with some state election every 6 months. There are 5 state elections from November 2023 to December 2023 ie Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Mizoram, Rajasthan,
Telangana. Among these states BJP has majority in 1 state ie MP and Congress in 2 ie Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Historically, it is observed that state elections may not have any bearing on the General elections which
are set to be held in May 2024 and hence does not have any major implications for the outlook on equity markets.
However, we observe a common trend over the past few elections like Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and now for the upcoming states mentioned above where various political parties are increasingly
promising freebies to the population of the state like free power upto 200 units per month per household, assured monthly income ranging from Rs 1000-3000 per month per women (regardless of income levels),
promises of reverting back to the old pension scheme for government employees from Defined Contribution plan currently, exposing state budget to large liabilities in future.
Although there is a limit for states to adhere to fiscal responsibility and manage their fiscal deficit upto 3% per annum, what is likely to happen, if this trend of high freebies continues, is that the proportion of infrastructure
capital expenditure by states can move lower and higher revenue expenditure can impact the overall long term growth profile of that particular state.
We hope that all political parties take a balanced approach and resort to subsidies only to the genuinely needy people of the state and not to everyone regardless of income levels.
We in our portfolios are focused on companies which can grow earnings at a fast pace and most importantly balance sheets/cash flow being on the positive side with less leverage.
Long-term structural drivers like demographic advantage, low household debt, limited penetration across different consumer categories, increased potential for financial savings and urbanization makes India a compelling
equity story from medium to long term perspective.
We believe investors would be well advised to invest with medium to long term perspective and systematically increase exposure to Indian equity markets.

Bonds yields moved up as US Federal Reserve signaled Fed Fund rates to stay higher for longer in the minutes of its meeting and as Economic Data remained strong. As per the federal Reserve projections, it is now
factoring one hike in the current calendar year and 2 rate cuts in the next year against no rate hike and four rate cuts as per previous projections. Crude oil prices are trading in the range of 95 dollars per barrel due to
additional 1.3 million barrels of production cuts by Saudi Arabia and Russia. Bond fund inclusion did not help as this was discounted by the market and trader’s positions are heavy. Higher oil prices, global uptick in yields
and weakening currency led to domestic bond yields coming under pressure.
Liquidity in the banking system was negative to the extent of Rs 1 Lakh crores during the month. This was due to advance tax outflow ( around Rs 1.5 Lakh crores) and GST outflows ( Rs 1.62 Lakh crores). Incremental
CRR reduction of 25 basis points in subsequent fortnights added around Rs 50000 Crores which was less than the outflows of around Rs 3 Lakh crores.
Corporate bonds and money market yields moved up due to tight liquidity and increasing issuance by corporate/ Financial institutions. Banking credit growth continues to be above deposit growth in absolute terms for the
last two years putting pressure on the yield curve. The G Sec and Corporate bond yields are now inverted due to tight liquidity and lower demand from mutual funds and banks who are the traditional buyers of short term
and medium-term papers. Corporate bond spread widened in the AAA category due to tight liquidity conditions and increasing issuance.
US bond yields hardened due to hawkish comments by Federal Reserve voting committee members. US CPI Inflation for August is at 3.75 % against the Federal Reserve target of 2 % levels. Higher oil prices are expected
to keep inflation higher even though there is a cooling down of inflation pressure in the economy as labour market comes in better demand supply balance. Jobs opening came at 9.61 million. The number of people available
for work is 0.70 for every job opening, indicating the still tight labour market conditions even though it has eased from 0.50 at the start of Federal Reserve rate hiking cycle. The chance of rate hike in the November 2023
policy has increased to 30 % after this data and ten-year US Yields have moved above 4.8 % levels. The data is now supporting the Federal Reserve assessment of only two rate cuts in the next calendar year.
Indian Government borrowing programme for the second half of the financial year is Rs 6.55 Lakh crores which is as per budget. The supply of long dated papers is around 40 % of the total borrowing. This borrowing
should be absorbed by the insurance, pension funds and other long-term investors. Markets have sold off even after bond fund inclusion in the global index by morgan and Bloomberg due to negative data flows like higher
oil prices and spike in US yields. In the primary market auction of government securities, bid cover ratio is lower at 2 times reflecting lower incremental demand for government papers from investors.
India’s CPI inflation for the month of September 2023 is expected to come at 5.5 percent. The sowing area for the current year is slightly higher than last year and monsoons are 95 percent of average of last ten year.
Sowing for rice is higher and for pulses and oil seeds it is lower. Global production of oilseeds is in surplus and they can imported in adequate quantities to meet the domestic demand. RBI in its monetary policy is expected
to maintain its hawkish tone and continue with its stance of withdrawal of accommodation . The ten-year bond yields is expected to trade in the band of 7.10 to 7.25 percent this month.

Tax Reckoner 2023-24
Snapshot of Income-tax rates specific to Mutual Funds
The rates are applicable for the financial year 2023-24 as per Finance Act, 2023
Income-tax implications on income in respect of units of a Mutual Fund
Type of Investor Withholding tax rate
Resident*** 10%*
NRI 20%** or rate as per applicable tax treaty*** (whichever is lower)
* Tax is not deductible if income in respect of units of a mutual fund is below Rs. 5,000 in a financial year.
** The base tax is to be further increased by surcharge at the rate of:
• 37% on base tax where income or aggregate of such income exceeds Rs. 5 crore;
• 25% where income or aggregate of such income exceeds Rs. 2 crore but does not exceed Rs. 5 crore;
• 15% where income or aggregate of such income exceeds Rs. 1 crore but does not exceed Rs. 2 crore; and
• 10% where income or aggregate of such income exceeds Rs. 50 lakhs but does not exceed Rs. 1 crore
In case investor is opting for ‘New Regime’ as mentioned on page 3, the rate of surcharge not to exceed 25%.
Further, “Health and Education Cess” is to be levied at 4% on aggregate of base tax and surcharge.
*** The income distributed by mutual fund to unitholders is unlikely to fall within the definition of dividend under the tax treaty. Given this and the language of the newly inserted proviso to section 196A,
claiming tax treaty benefit in respect of income distributed by mutual fund to unitholders for withholding tax purpose may not be possible.
**** As per section 139AA of the Income tax Act, 1961 (‘the Act’) read with rule 114AAA of the Income-tax Rules, 1962, in the case of a resident person, whose PAN has become inoperative due to PAN –
Aadhaar not being linked on or before 30 June 2023, it shall be deemed that he has not furnished the PAN and tax could be withheld at a higher rate of 20% as per section 206AA of the Act. For linking PAN
with Aadhaar after 30 June 2022, fees of Rs. 1000 thereafter has been prescribed.
Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
Further, the domestic companies are subject to minimum alternate tax (except for those who opt for lower rate of tax of 22%/15%) not specified in above tax rates.
Transfer of units upon consolidation of mutual fund schemes of two or more schemes of equity oriented fund or two or more schemes of a fund other than equity oriented fund in
accordance with SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996 is exempt from capital gains.
Transfer of units upon consolidation of plans within mutual fund schemes in accordance with SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996 is exempt from capital gains.
Relaxation to non-residents from deduction of tax at higher rate (except income distributed by mutual fund) in the absence of PAN subject to them providing specified information
and documents.
Tax to be deducted at twice the applicable rate in case of payments to specified person (except non-resident not having permanent establishment in India or person who is not
required to furnish the return of income as notified by the Central Government) who has not furnished the return of income for the assessment year relevant to previous year
immediately preceding the financial year in which tax is required to be deducted:
• For which time limit for filing return has expired; and
• The aggregate of tax deducted at source in his case is Rs. 50,000 or more in the said previous year.
Additionally, if provisions of section 206AA are also applicable then tax to be deducted at higher of the two rates provided i.e. rate as per section 206AB or section 206AA.

** For purpose of tax calculation under New Regime, no exemption/ deductions have been claimed and it has been proposed that enhanced surcharge of 37% should not apply.
*** NIL tax on account of rebate under section 87A.
# If the said taxable income includes income by way of dividend on shares and short-term capital gains in case of listed equity shares, equity oriented mutual fund units,

• The Std. Dev., Sharpe Ratio, Jensen’s Alpha, Treynor, Portfolio Beta & R-squared are based on one month return calculated using last 3 years data.
• Price/Earning Ratio, Price/Book Value Ratio, are based on the historical earnings and accounting numbers, and have been computed only for the invested portion of the portfolio.
• Portfolio turnover has been computed as the ratio of the lower value of average purchase and average sales to the average net assets in the past one year (For schemes that have not completed one year, since
inception is considered)
• Cash & Cash Equivalents includes CBLO, REPO, Fixed Deposits and Cash & Bank Balance.
$-ICRA’s mutual fund rating methodology is based on evaluating the inherent credit quality of the fund’s portfolio. As a measure of the credit quality of a debt fund’s assets. ICRA uses the concept of ‘credit
scores’. These scores are based on ICRA’s estimates of credit risk associated with each exposure of the portfolio taking into account its maturity. To quantify the credit risk scores, ICRA uses its database
of historical default rates for various rating categories for various maturity buckets. The credit risk ratings incorporate ICRA’s assessment of a debt fund’s published investment objectives and policies, its
management characteristics, and the creditworthiness of its investment portfolio. ICRA reviews relevant fund information on an ongoing basis to support its published rating opinions. If the portfolio credit
score meets the benchmark of the assigned rating during the review, the rating is retained. In an event that the benchmark credit score is breached, ICRA gives a month’s time to the debt fund manager to
bring the portfolio credit score within the benchmark credit score. If the debt fund manager is able to reduce the portfolio credit score within the benchmark credit score, the rating is retained. If the portfolio
still continues to breach the benchmark credit score, the rating is revised to reflect the change in credit quality.

Application Amount for Fresh Subscription: This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Minimum Additional Amount: This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Yield to Maturity: The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM
factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
SIP: SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. It works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For
instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
NAV: The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated
at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Benchmark: A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment performance of mutual
funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-Year Gsec.
Entry Load: A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the time of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent.
Entry load is charged at the time an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the time of investment. For
instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs 101.
Exit Load: Exit load is charged at the time an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is reduced from the prevailing NAV at the time of redemption
The investor will receive redemption proceeds at net value of NAV less Exit Load. For instance, if the NAV is Rs 100 and the exit load is 1%, the investor will receive
Rs 99.
Modified Duration: Modified duration is the price sensitivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield.
Standard Deviation: Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation,
its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe Ratio, named after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard
deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
Beta: Beta is a measure of an investment’s volatility vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile than the market. A beta
of greater than 1 implies that the security’s price will be more volatile than the market.
AUM: AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund or any investment firm.
Holdings: The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated reported statement of investments/securities. These are usually displayed in terms of
percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.
Nature of Scheme: The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at
generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing
in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have sub-categories.
Rating Profile: Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various
investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
R-Squared: R-squared measures the relationship between a portfolio and its benchmark. It is simply a measure of the correlation of the portfolio’s returns to the
benchmark’s returns.
Treynor Ratio: Treynor Ratio is a measurement of efficiency utilizing the relationship between annualized risk-adjusted return and risk. Unlike Sharpe Ratio, Treynor
Ratio utilizes “market” risk (beta) instead of total risk (standard deviation).
Jensen Alpha: A measure of the difference between a fund’s actual returns and its expected performance, given its level of risk as measured by beta. Jensen’s
Alpha is equivalent to the alpha derived from regressing the same or portfolio’s returns in excess of the risk free rate against the market return in excess of the
risk free rate.
