A Streetcar Named Desire- Scene 8

1. What is interesting about the stage directions? What new aspect of the scenery is
highlighted and why?

It has a very clear focus on windows and “big windows”,”lightened windows”and “windows
reflecting the sunset”, windows connote freedom and escape and this emphasises Blanche
slack of escape. Windows also allow light to enter a room, which could symbolise how
Blanche is finally being exposed and cannot hide any longer.

2. What’s the significance of Blanche’s joke? How does it contrast other jokes used
in the play?

Blanches joke was not made at the right time, whist it was a birthday dinner, both stanley
and stella would have been reflecting on her past and this made the joke be received badly,
and it highlights the air of hopeless, as the audience knows blanches chances t a new happy
life was ruined by stanley knowing the truth.

3. How are Stanley’s animalistic qualities emphasised? How are we reminded of the
physical threat posed by him?

His animalistic qualities are emphasised when he eats with his fingers despite having a knife
and fork readily available, this again brings attention to his hands and fingers, reminding the
audience of the both he holds through his physical strengths and how this poses a threat.

4. How is music/folk song/ sound effects used to create psychological realism in the
scene and express Blanche’s experiences?

When williams was us tp particularly focus on what the characters are saying or doing the
music in the background sop, this happens before blanche tells her joke and before stanley
shouts at balance for calling him a polack. The lack of sound is a device used to create
tension and amplify violence and tension

5. In this scene Stella’s loyalties are tested and she equivocates (avoids committing
herself). Can you find examples and explore how her character adds to the rising
tensions in the scene?
From the start of the play stella has always been the link between blanche and stanley and
previously she aided in lowering the conflict between them, we half expect stella to calm the
situation down once more but only this time she is backed into a corner forced to pick
between her husband and sister, showing that their conflict has reached a new level, the
change in the conflict adds to the tensions and hints a something significantly bad happening

6. Stanley gives two important speeches here. What lines stand out to you and
why?

When he says “I was as common as dirt… i pulled you down off them columns”
That stands out the most to me because from the start of the play tensions have always
been present because of social class, but none of the characters bluntly state their issues
with the others social class.

7. What happens at the end of the scene? What stage picture is created? How does
this prepare the ground for scene 9? (Deus ex machina- an unconvincing twist in
the plot to resolve a difficulty)

Stanley and stella leave together leaving blanche alone, this paints the scene that stanley
has won and stella has chosen him over her. This tells us that in scene 9, blanche’s last
chance is over ad she will likely leave
