In the first week I was assigned the role of floor manager in this role I would direct and
manage the talent on the day I would also direct the cameras as to when they are on air and
when they are off air. I was happy with the role I had been given as I had prior experience in
this role and the original producer took this into consideration. By week three we had
changed producer and my role in pre-production had shifted slightly we had been tasked
from the first week with creating a running order and the first producer could not deliver so
we changed and began working immediately on the running order for the show. I thought
that during this time me and the director should have a chat about how she would like the
stage as it currently wasn’t being spoken about. We decided on a hometown girl theme
where we would play her music video in the background and use foliage stage curtains to
create the atmosphere that she would have been in the countryside. I think if we could of
pulled this off then it would have made the show look much more professional and it would
have made our group stand out against the others and garnered more attention from the
audience.
We then moved over to the fourth week we had all been waiting for the running order from
the producer which hadn’t been sent over to us and we were all a little worried. We had no
word from our producer this week and we all worked respectively through our own tasks. In
this week we decided we needed to film and interview with our talent and therefore be able
to create a backstory around her so that the audience would care. As no producer was
present I took the temporary role of producer and began open discussion with our talent
about the interview I scheduled it for the week before Easter and all parties agreed. I then
asked the Camera Operators if they would book out there equipment as they would be
responsible for it on the day.
We got to the fifth week and still had no running order, this week I was also assigned the
role of producer as we had made no progress with anyone else. I immediately create a
running order so that the show and the people working on it had some structure. We then
began getting ready for the interview I told everyone that during the week I would like the
camera operators to book out their equipment get familiar with it and be prepared for the
shoot. I then asked the interviewer if they would prepare questions for the interview and I
also asked the Director for a shot list for the Interview and the show. During this week I
began creating call sheets for the group so that everyone knew what they were doing upon
arrival to the shoot. I found that this way of working for our group worked best for us. I
would however have preferred for a more structured approach from the other producers as
that would have allowed us to be thinking completely creatively but instead we are 5 weeks
in and still worried about feasibility of the show. In the future I would like for a proper work
plan to be put in place so that the group can all work together to create something.
Week 6 was the first full week I was producer and the final week before we broke up for
Easter. This week I planned the interview with the talent. I scheduled it for 2 o’clock in the
afternoon to be accommodating to the talent as she had college and dinner either side of
ideal shoot time, she also gave us the location to film the interview in, this usually would be
great however I hadn’t seen the location before. Despite this we still filmed the interview
there I think that in the future I would like to get into contact with the people at the building
as I would like to know if we are welcomed to film or not and if they can accommodate to
our needs more. I also found that when we got to the building, we were a little lost in my
productions going forward I would like to have a clear idea of what we are doing and where
we are going as to not conflict with strict timing in the industry.
When getting to the location I noticed there was a lot of natural light in the room. For this
interview we wanted it to look more like a studio than a well lit and open aired room so we
closed all the natural light out and set our lights up. In the future I would like to make sure
that all of the camera operators are happy with their cameras as the two shots we had were
lit very differently and therefore we had only one shot that could be used. We also filmed b-
roll with the talent and I think in the future we should film better b-roll that is more
contextualised to the artist and having a wider cover of shots would help with the long shots
on her face.
Over the Easter break I readied myself for the transmission day as I knew it would be a very
hard task. I began writing a script that I finished over the easter break, for the presenters so
that they knew what they were saying when linking different parts of our show together.
This meant that there was no confusion on the day, and I found it to be the most efficient
way to get the presenter parts done and out of the way. I did find that the presenters came
off a little bit rigid in terms of their delivery and overall flow with the show.
As a producer transmission day went pretty much perfectly as I had very little to worry about
I got everyone into their positions gave them a briefing on what they were going to do and
how I would be there to make sure everything moved over fine. All technical problems
where solved by the technicians on the day.
Overall I think we created a good segment on a good show. I think if the structure I brought
in had been in from the beginning then we would have created something much, much
better.
