Learning Outcomes
Students investigate and analyze how materials have the potential to be changed
SLO’s
1. A reversible change is a change that can be undone, such as melting or
freezing.
2. A permanent change is a change that cannot be undone, such as cooking an
egg or baking a cake.
OBJECTIVES
Students will apply their understanding of reversible and permanent changes using
materials provided in class.
TECHNOLOGY CHOSEN
On Monday, we learned about solids, liquids and gasses. We are going to do a brief
1
review to freshen your understanding of the states of matter and how they can
change depending on how we manipulate them
Previous Knowledge:
Slide presentation: Show pictures of liquid, gas, and solids and create a discussion.
ABC cards or whiteboards (for peers, they will put up 1,2,3 finger)
With the pictures, you will determine whether it is a solid, liquid, or gas using your
fingers. Then we will provide a scenario of a change to an object that will occur
and the students will tell the teacher which state of matter that object is in.
Lesson:
Activity: Through the use of Think pair share, students with their elbow partner
will answer the following question: What is an example of reversible change in
your household? Afterwards, students will give an answer to the rest of the group.
The teacher will correct or have the students explain why their example is
reversible.
2
Regain student's attention by doing the clap method
Such as our smoothie example, the teacher will now explain why the smoothie is a
permanent change.
Activity: In your table groups: Show pictures/ give scenarios and they have to
figure out if the change is reversible or permanent. Each group will be given
different examples, in this case, they will be given one
After making their choice they share what they think with the class and explain
their reasoning. If they are wrong, the teacher explains why melting chocolate is
reversible.
Final Activity:
Step 1: With any of the materials provided and a partner, think about what you will
use to create a reversible and irreversible change.
3
Step 2: Collect the materials you need and perform your reversible and irreversible
changes.
Step 3: Show the teacher your completed changes to ensure understanding of the
different types of changes.
Step 4: With the teacher's approval record your findings on a piece of paper and
reflect on how you demonstrated the changes and why it was successful.
