1 Declarations of Manufacturer
1.1 Declaration regarding assemblies and components
Since 29 December 2009 a new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has to be applied
bindingly in the member states of the European Community.
Voith turbo couplings of Product Group 'Start-up Components' as defined by the new
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the explanations of the guidelines published in
December 2009 to implement the machinery directive, are neither "Machinery" nor
"incomplete machinery" but assemblies or components.
Voith as certified company ensures that the basic safety and health requirements for
their products are always be met by internal quality management systems and by
applying harmonized standards.
The technical documentation for Voith products is so comprehensive that they may be
installed reliably into machinery or incomplete machinery and a safe operation of the
complete machinery with regard to the Voith products is also possible later on when
observing this documentation.

The coupling is manufactured to the latest design standards and approved safety regu-
lations. Nevertheless, the user's or third parties' life may be endangered or the machi-
ne or other material assets impaired in case of improper handling or use.
Proper use:
Through the input assembly (flange and diaphragm) the turbo coupling with constant
fill type TM1 and/or DTM1 is suitable for mounting on combustion engines and is pro-
vided to transmit the torque from the driving engine to the Voith Schneider propeller.
The power allowed at a specific coupling fill (Operating fluid and Fill) is indicated on the
cover sheet of this manual. Use for another purpose or beyond it, e.g. for higher po-
wers or speeds, is not considered being in accordance with the regulations.
The manufacturer is not liable for damages resulting from improper use. The risk is to
be borne solely by the user.
Spare parts must comply with the requirements determined by Voith.
This is guaranteed when original spare parts are being used.
Spare parts from other suppliers may, under circumstances, change the characteris-
tics of the unit and lead to substantial defects, for which Voith cannot assume respon-
sibility.

For all work performed on the turbo coupling, please observe the local regu-
lations for prevention of accidents!
DANGER!
– Rotating parts:
Rotating parts, for example, the turbo coupling itself and exposed shaft parts
must be protected against contact by a guard! However, ventilation of
coupling must not be impaired.
Never operate the coupling without these guards!
– Electrical components:
Contact with exposed or free terminals, cables and equipment may cause
most severe injuries or death!
In the event of a defect, also assemblies potential-free during operation may
be conductive.

ATTENTION!
– Power transmission:
The cover sheet of this operating manual shows a possible power to be
transmitted at a specific input speed and a specific coupling fill. These
values describe a permissible working point for steady operation of coupling.
Voith Turbo's approval is required for steady operation of the coupling at a
different working point!
ATTENTION!
Temperatures are valid for application within the power diagram!
In case of deviations, please consult Voith Turbo.
– When reaching the coupling temperature indicated in the cover sheet, the Me-
chanical Thermal Switch Unit (MTS) will respond, see Chapter 16.1. An alert
signal has to be initiated and the driving condition has to be adapted according-
ly.
– When reaching the coupling temperature indicated in the cover sheet, the fu-
sible plugs will respond. The solder core of the fusible plug will melt, operating
fluid escape and the power flow will be interrupted.

4 Function, Types
4.1 Operation

The Voith turbo coupling transmits the torque by the mass forces of a fluid circulating
between the input side pump impeller (P) and the output side turbine wheel (T)
(Fig. 1). The runners have radial blades.
The operating fluid is accelerated by the input torque in the pump impeller and produ-
ces an equal output torque in the turbine wheel in which it is decelerated.
The fluid can only circulate and a torque be transmitted if there is a pressure difference
between pump impeller and turbine wheel, which means that the turbine wheel has to
rotate slower than the impeller. This speed difference (slip) and thus the amount of
torque transmitted can be varied to suit the operating conditions by the design data of
the turbo coupling and its fill level.
The turbo coupling guarantees a relieved driving engine run-up by limiting the torque
during startup.
If shocks occur during operation, the turbo coupling is able to protect the engine, the
gear unit and the Voith Schneider propeller against overloading. However, in case of
sudden blocking of the propeller, the diesel engine can be stopped.
As the torque is transmitted by means of the operating fluid, sudden shocks and torsio-

4.4 Description
The turbo coupling is installed between driving engine and gearbox or Voith Schneider
propeller.
The connection with the engine is flexible using a diaphragm.
The driving engine must take over axial guidance of turbo coupling, as the output side
pedestal bearing is designed as floating bearing.
The pedestal bearing is used as support on the output shaft and the pilot bearing (self-
aligning roller bearing) on the input side of turbo coupling.
– The turbo coupling is assembled completely ready for installation, however, without
oil fill.
– The input and loose parts assemblies (see parts list, chapter 18.1) are packed se-
parately and shipped.
6 Tightening Torques
ATTENTION!
Oil the screws slightly before inserting them!
For tightening torques of individual screws, please see the respective coupling as-
sembly plan, chapter 18.2.

WARNING!
Damaged slings (ropes, chains etc.) or those with insufficient carrying capacity
may break under load, with the consequence of most serious or even fatal inju-
ries!
Check the lifting appliances and slings for
– sufficient carrying capacity,
– sound condition.
7.1 Preparation
Provide suitable tools and lifting appliances. Please observe the turbo coupling
weight!
Note!
The turbo coupling weight is mentioned on the cover sheet of this operating manual. In
addition, the weight is stamped by figure stamps on the outer flange diameter of coup-
ling.
Tightening torques see arrangement drawing.
7.2 Installation
7.2.1 How to install the diaphragm assembly
plan.
Press self-aligning roller bearing (2732) into bearing cover (2730).

If not yet mounted, screw lubricating nipple (2731) into bearing flange (2720).
Let bearing cover with mounted self-aligning roller bearing and with the felt strip
pointing up down on a flat, clean rest.
Lay diaphragm (2710) onto the prepared bearing cover.
Slip O-ring (2750) unrifled over, do not roll it.
Put on the bearing flange so that the fastening bores are in line. Observe balancing
marks, if any.
Screw the diaphragm group to the customer-provided shaft using bolts (2780).

Set the turbo coupling up for installation of pedestal bearing with the output shaft
pointing up. Please see installation and operating manual, chapter 20.1.
ATTENTION!
Pedestal bearing is designed as non-locating bearing.
For first delivery, the fixed rings have already been removed at Voith’s.
When exchanging the pedestal bearing make sure to remove the fixed rings.
Fix the turbo coupling on a sufficiently dimensioned lifting appliance (Figures 4 and
5). The lifting appliance suspension lugs are to be provided on the coupling itself
and on the output shaft.
Suspend coupling type TM1 via a shackle. The customer has to provide the shack-
le and to fix it to at least 2 circumferrential screws of the turbo coupling.
Lift the turbo coupling carefully and put it down, together with the pedestal bearing,
on the foundation at the assembly site. On the input side, push the shaft end of
coupling shaft (0040) carefully into the self-aligning roller bearing (2732).
Bolt the diaphragm (2710) and the turbo coupling together using screws (2760) and
washers (2770 and 2790, if applicable).
Bolt the pedestal bearing housing, on the output side, slightly with the foundation.
Align the height largely to prevent bending of diaphragm.
Pull the provisionally bolted pedestal bearing apart so that the position of self-
aligning roller bearing can still be corrected according to the assembly plan.
Now re-assemble the pedestal bearing and bolt it tightly with the foundation.

ATTENTION!
Provide the turbo coupling with a protective cover at site. This protecttive cover
shall prevent the contact with the rotating turbo coupling and retain operating
oil that might be sprayed off.
Note!
– The protective cover must not hinder heat dissipation.
– As far as possible, use perforated sheet or expanded metal.
– In the area of the fusible plugs, provide the cover with solid wall to collect any
operating fluid that might be sprayed off.
– Observe the proposal regarding the protective cover in Chapter 18.3 and the
instructions from the assembly plan in Chapter 18.2.
By all means observe the instructions and do not change the design of the
protective cover (chapter 18.3) (contact Voith Turbo, if necessary).
– Supply and exhaust air openings have to be available!
– Provide suitably sized openings for lubrication of the self-aligning roller bearing
(2732) via lubricating nipples (2731). Close the openings with a cap.
ATTENTION!
Design the guards to be installed at site on the input and output shaft so that
the oil-lubricated pedestal bearings are not sucked empty by a possibly occur-
ring underpressure.

DANGER!
Please observe, in particular chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo coup-
ling!
Through a connecting coupling, the turbo coupling is connected with the shaft journal
on the output side. Keep radial and angular displacement between turbo coupling and
shaft journal as small as possible! Perfect alignment increases the lifetime and reliabili-
ty of your unit!
Regarding the alignment values of the connecting coupling to be procured at site,
please refer to the relevant alignment manual of the manufacturer.
8.2 Alignment
Use dial gauges for alignment of turbo coupling guaranteeing precise results!

CAUTION!
The operating fluids may cause irritations or inflammation when in contact with
skin and mucous membranes.
Please always wear protective glasses for any work to be done in connection
with the operating fluid!
Should you get any operating fluid in your eyes, rinse them immediately using a
lot of water and consult a physician!
After you finished your work, clean your hands carefully with soap.
ATTENTION!
– Comply with the fill level mentioned on the cover sheet of this operating
manual.
– Do not overfill! This would lead to an excessive and high internal pressure in
the coupling that may destroy the coupling.
– Impurities in the operating fluid cause an increased wear of the coupling.
Observe that any containers, funnels, filling tubes etc. used for filling the
coupling, are clean.
– Do not mix different types of operating fluids.

– A too low fill level leads to a higher thermal load on the coupling and a lower stall
torque.
Turn the coupling until the filler plug (item 390) is on top.
Unscrew the filler plug.
Remove the top fusible plug (item 395) for pressure compensation.
Fill the specified operating fluid quantity into the filler plug opening.
During filling filter the operating fluid using a filter screen (approx. 40µm).
Tighten the filler plug; ensure that the original sealing rings used are in sound con-
dition.
The coupling is provided with a sight glass, tighten the fusible plug and ensure that
the original sealing rings used are in sound condition.

Turn the coupling until the operating fluid is just visible at the sight glass.
Determine the number z of flange screws from the sight glass to the vertical axis.
The first screw is the one in counting direction after the intersection line through the
sight glass.
For later fill level checks, record the number z of the screws determined and addi- z = ____
tionally mark the coupling or guard.
If not yet done, tighten the fusible plug and ensure that the original sealing rings

from page 25 during filling.
Please observe any additional mark provided on the coupling or guard.
Correct the fill level in case of variations!
If a fusible plug has been unscrewed, retighten the same. Ensure that the original
sealing rings used are in sound condition.
After a test run (with guard!) check the coupling for leaks.

ATTENTION!
– Check the oil level daily when the unit is stopped by means of the oil dip stick
(Fig. 9). Top up oil only when the minimum mark is reached.
– Do not overfill the pedestal bearing! Oil leaks out in case of overfill, see the
information contained in the installation and operating manual (min. and
max. marks) in chapter 20.1.
ATTENTION!
Operating fluids disposed of improperly, may cause most severe environmental
damage! On disposal, please observe the applicable laws as well as the manu-
facturer's or supplier's instructions!

Provide suitable containers to collect the operating fluid. Ensure that the volume of
containers is sufficient!

Turn the coupling so that one fusible plug is at the bottom point.
Remove this fusible plug.
For venting purposes, remove one filler or fusible plug that is opposite the fusible
plug already removed.
After draining the coupling, retighten the plugs. Ensure that the original sealing
rings used are in sound condition.

– Never operate the turbo coupling without operating fluid!
– Never operate the turbo coupling without protective cover!
– The following temperatures must no be exceeded:

Observe – On account of the type of bearings used for standard turbo couplings of size
chapter 12 on 650, 750, 866 and 1150 at least one standstill is required within a period of 3
page 29 months.
– On account of the type of bearings used for standard turbo couplings of size
1000, at least one standstill is required once a week.

The fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damage due to thermal over-
load.
When the response temperature is reached, the solder core of fusible plug melts
and the operating fluid escapes.
ATTENTION!
– Overheating will destroy the turbo coupling!
– Switch off the driving engine immediately on response of a fusible plug!
– Use original fusible plugs only, with the response temperature mentioned on
the cover sheet of this operating manual!
– Do not replace any fusible plugs by blind screws!
– On response of one fusible plug, replace also the remaining fusible plugs!
– After installing new fusible plugs, fill in new operating fluid! Observe chap-
ter 10.1.

The shaft sealing rings are pressed into the sealing ring cover and are destroyed
when forced out.
Clean the sealing ring covers from old sealing compound. Do not damage the cover
sealing surfaces towards runner parts!
Apply oil and temperature-resistant sealing compound (e.g. Hylomar) to the new
shaft sealing rings. Press the shaft sealing rings into the sealing ring cover using a
mounting ring (Fig. 11).

Set the turbo coupling down on a wooden base with the output side on top.
Remove the screws (0540) at the periphery.
Press the coupling shell (0190) off the outer wheel (0300) using puller screws.
Dismount the coupling shell together with the ball and roller bearing (0130) from the
coupling shaft (0040).
Turn the turbo coupling so that the input side is on top.
Push off cover (0800 at 1150 TM1) or (0830 at 650-1000 TM1) respectiveley after
removal of the screws (0850 at 1150 TM1) or (0810 at 650-1000 TM1).
Remove the circlip (0150).
Pull outer wheel (0300) with mounted grooved ball bearing (0130 at 1150 TM1) or
(0140 at 650-1000 TM1) off the coupling shaft.
In case of running marks on the coupling shaft, dismount the inner wheel (0090) by
removing the screws (0110).
Set the turbo coupling down on a wooden base with the output side on top.
Remove the screws (0540) at the periphery.
Extract outer wheel 2 (0305) from the intermediate piece (0995) using puller screws
and remove the grooved ball bearing (0130) from the coupling shaft.
Turn the turbo coupling so that the input side is on top.
Push up the cover (0800) and/or (0830) after removing screws (0850).
Remove the circlip (0150).
Remove outer wheel 1 (0305) with mounted intermediate piece (0995) and grooved
ball bearing (0130) from the coupling shaft.
Extract outer wheel 1 from the intermediate piece using puller screws.
In case of running marks on the coupling shaft, dismount the inner wheels (0095)
by removing the screws (0110).

Check the shaft sealing ring contact surfaces of the coupling shaft for running
marks.
ATTENTION!
Please consult Voith Turbo in case of heavy running marks (hair lines).
Regrind and polish the contact surface in case of minor hair lines on the shaft
sealing ring contact surfaces.
ATTENTION!
Please observe when grinding:
– Position the coupling shaft so that the bearing seats are concentric. For shaft
sealing contact surfaces, concentricity of bearing seats is essential.
– Perform grinding nontwisting without thrust in one grinding process. Then smoothen
the shaft sealing ring contact surfaces by polishing (max. roughness about 2 µm).
– For a proper pretensioning of the shaft sealing rings, it is only allowed to fall by a
certain factor below the coupling shaft diameter:

Fill the units with operating oil free from water. Dependent of the progress of
assembly, the following action can be taken in 1 to 2 months intervals:

space and pump oil through the piping by a separate oil pump, running time approx.
5 minutes, rotate the equipment, if possible. Move movable parts (e.g. joints) and

Prior to filling in the operating fluid, consult the supplier with regard to its
compatibility with the internal preservation agent.

20 Attaching Parts
20.1.1 Applicability
20.1.2 General
The assembly and operating instructions apply to oil-lubricated housings for support
bearings for marine shafting with SKF radial spherecal roller bearings of different
sizes, mounted on adapter sleeves as per the above SKF drawing numbers. The
housings are fitted with oil flinger rings, located on both sides of the bearing, with radial
oil outlet and additional dust-proof seal in the single-piece housing covers. Oil level
checks can be carried out using the oil dip-stick when the bearing is not in operation.
Additional face-side mounting holes in the housing covers enable additional air baffles
to be fitted.
20.1.3 Preparation
Refer to the assembly drawings corresponding to the above drawing numbers and lay
out the individual housing components. Select the appropriate adapter sleeve and
locknut indicated on the drawing and prepare the SKF spherical roller bearing in its
original packaging. All
parts of the bearing (housing, shafts etc.) must be carefully cleaned and any burrs
removed. Any preservative still adhering to the brand-new bearings does not need to
be removed.
If the bearing is mounted on an adapter sleeve the diametrical tolerance of the shaft
must be produced in accordance with h6, and form tolerance in accordance with IT5.

20.1.4 Assembly
To ensure that the housing functions properly when the shafting is inclined, the various
assembly steps must be carried out in such an order that the housing cover with the
seat for the oil dip-stick (item 2) is placed on the lowest side of the housing (i.e. side
with the highest oil level). First slip the housing cover (item 2), oil flinger ring (item 4),
baffle (item 5), flat gasket item 7) and - if the bearing is to serve as locating bearing - a
locating ring (item 15) onto the shaft.
ATTENTION!
Only use a locating ring with a locating bearing!
Then place the spherical roller bearing of the appropriate size onto the adapter sleeve
incl. locking plate and screw on the appropriate locknut loosely. Insert the shaft and
bearing into the housing; the bearing outer ring must be easy to move inside the
housing. Then on the other side of the housing, slip the locating ring (item 15 - if
necessary), the baffle (item 5), the flat gasket (item 7) and the second oil flinger ring
onto the shaft, observing the orientation indicated in the drawing. Also place housing
cover (item 3) in position.
Match up and align mounting position of the housing (item 1) with the overall assembly
plan. The maximum admissible misalignment of the housing axis with respect to the
shaft axis is 0.5°. Align the spherical roller bearings with the centre of the housing and
tighten using the locknut; in the case of a tapered bore, the radial internal clearance
must be reduced in line with SKF guidelines (see Appendix page 5 or SKF General
Catalogue).
ATTENTION!
The adapter sleeve must sit smoothly and securely on the shaft. Serious damage can
be caused if the bearing slides on the adapter sleeve or the adapter sleeve slips
around the shaft.
During assembly please check the reduction in bearing clearance inside the bearing
and compare with the minimum admissible radial internal clearance given in the cata-
logue.
After mounting the bearing, position the oil flinger ring located on the side with the oil
dip-stick at the distance given in the drawing and secure with two grub screws (item
12).
Screw the housing cover and baffle onto the housing with the screws and spring
washers supplied (item 8/14). The oil collecting chamber must be located at the
bottom.
On the opposite side of the housing, push on the oil flinger ring so that it abuts the
adapter sleeve and secure tightly to the shaft using the grub screws. Then attach the
baffle and the housing cover. Here too, the oil collecting chamber must be located at
the bottom.
Slip sealing rings (item 11/13) onto the screw plugs and screw in.
Before pouring the oil in, check the alignment again. Maximum misalignment of
housing axis with respect to the shaft axis is 0.5°. Should any subsequent adjustments
be necessary, the feet of the housing should be balanced out using shims the same

Appendix) for the size of the housing through the holes in the cover; then seal the
holes with the screw plugs (item 10). Insert the oil dip-stick (item 6) and remove again
carefully. Where you can see the level of the oil, mark the MAX. level on the oil dip-
stick. Find out the MIN. level corresponding to the housing size in the Appendix,
measure it out and make a notch below the MAX. marking on the oil dip-stick.

20.1.5 Lubrication
To ensure adequate lubrication and cooling of the radial spherical roller bearings,
mineral oils with a viscosity complying with ISO VG 100 or higher must be used for all
housing sizes.
When the bearing is being run in, a transparent, white fluid can seep out around the
dust-proof seal (impregnating oil from Ramilon seal). This does not affect the seal or
functioning of the bearing.
Owing to the small volume of oil in the housings, the oil should be topped up carefully
during assembly and changed at the intervals recommended by the oil supplier.
20.1.7 Appendix

1 Preface
The mechanical thermal switch unit is manufactured to the latest design standards
and approved safety regulations. Nevertheless, the user's or third parties' life may be
endangered or the unit and other material assets impaired in case of improper hand-
ling or use.
Spare parts:
Spare parts must comply with the requirements determined by Voith.
This is guaranteed when original spare parts are being used.
Installation and/or use of non-original spare parts may negatively change the mecha-
nical properties of the Voith Turbo coupling and thus have an adverse impact on the
safety.
Voith is not liable for damages resulting from use of non-original spare parts.

3 Applications,
Characteristics of MTS
The mechanical thermal switch unit (MTS) is a monitoring system for Voith turbo
couplings.
– If the overtemperature is detected in time, the loss of coupling fill through the fusib-
le plugs can be avoided. Downtimes are reduced.
EX PROTECTION!
The thermal switching element MTS is used in potentially explosive areas to
monitor the temperature. The signals indicate pre-alarm. The MTS does not limit
the maximum surface temperature.

– The switching element is inserted into the turbo coupling outer wheel instead of a
blind screw, thus providing a thermal contact between switching element and ope-
rating fluid.
– In exceptional cases, when the space is restricted, it is permitted to install the swit-
ching element in the coupling shell. Please consult Voith Turbo.
– A spring-loaded pin and a chamber filled with solder is integrated in the switching
element. The response temperature of switching element corresponds to the res-
ponse temperature of solder.
– Below the response temperature the solder keeps the pin in its original position.
When the response temperature is reached, the solder releases the pin and a
compression spring presses the pin outside.
– After each MTS response, the switching element is no longer fit for use and has to
be replaced.
4.2 Switch
– Dependent on the space available, the switch is installed parallel or in radial posi-
tion to the turbo coupling axis. The switch is provided with a pivotable switching fin-
ger.
– The switch is wired as snap-action connection with a make-and-break contact.

Following any shut-down the control system is to be locked in a way that
prevents automatic re-start.

Application:
Switch ExM 61 D complies with the European standards for explosion protection
EN 60079-0, EN 60079-1 and EN 60079-3 and is therefore designed for use in the
explosive areas of zone 1 and 2 as well as zone 21 and 22 as per DIN EN 60079-14
and EN 61241-14.
Design / Function:
Switch ExM 61 D contains an explosion-proof contact unit, type ExM 14.
The contact unit is provided with cast-in cable.
The contact unit contains a single-pole double-throw switch (SPDT switch) (jacket
color: blue, brown, and black).

– Fusible plugs
Fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damages due to thermal
overload. Even when the MTS is used, the fusible plugs must not get repla-
ced by blind screws or by fusible plugs with other rated response temperatu-
res!

ATTENTION!
To avoid any damage install the switching element and the switch after instal-
ling and prior to filling the turbo coupling.
Instead of a blind screw, insert the switching element with seal ring into the turbo
coupling outer wheel.

In case of an input side connecting coupling type ERK and sizes 206 and 274 previously
screw in the intermediate piece.
Note!
In exceptional cases, when the space is restricted, it is permitted to install the swit-
ching element in the coupling shell! Please consult Voith Turbo.

– Correct switching function is not guaranteed in case of faulty alignment!

6.3 Connection
Note!
– Wiring of MTS is not our scope of supply!
– If switching element and fusible plugs are installed in the same outer part,
we basically recommend to switch off the drive on response of MTS!
– The electrical connection may only be carried out by an authorized person.
– We recommend to design the switch connection in a way so that both over-
temperature and cable break result in an overtemperature warning (connect
break contact).
Connect the switch, observe the switching capacity. Protect the connecting cables Chapter 5.2,
against damage due to environmental influence! page 12
The connection cable has to be fixed and laid in a way that it is protected against
mechanical damages.
For proper functioning, the switch is to be attached in such a manner that the contact
travel required for switching can safely be reached. During assembly, please observe
that displacing the switch is avoided in any case, even in case of failure. Under no cir-
cumstances must the switch be actuated beyond its inner stop as this may damage
the switch. The switch housing must not be used as a stop. The switch can be
mounted in any desired position.
