1 Declarations of Manufacturer
1.1 Declaration regarding assemblies and components
Since 29 December 2009 a new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has to be applied
bindingly in the member states of the European Community.

Voith turbo couplings of Product Group 'Start-up Components' as defined by the new
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the explanations of the guidelines published in
December 2009 to implement the machinery directive, are neither "Machinery" nor
"incomplete machinery" but assemblies or components.

As our products are no incomplete machinery, we do not issue a declaration of incor-


poration as per Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Also, an EC Declaration of Conformity must not be issued, neither the CE marking be


made, unless specified by other EC directives or regulations.

Voith as certified company ensures that the basic safety and health requirements for
their products are always be met by internal quality management systems and by
applying harmonized standards.

The technical documentation for Voith products is so comprehensive that they may be
installed reliably into machinery or incomplete machinery and a safe operation of the
complete machinery with regard to the Voith products is also possible later on when
observing this documentation.

2 Preface, General Information


This manual will support you in using this turbo coupling in a safe, proper and econo-
mical way. If you observe the information contained in this manual, you will
– increase the reliability and lifetime of coupling and installation,
– avoid any hazards,
– reduce repairs and downtimes.

This manual must


– always be available at the machine site,
– be read and used by every person who works on the coupling.

The coupling is manufactured to the latest design standards and approved safety regu-
lations. Nevertheless, the user's or third parties' life may be endangered or the machi-
ne or other material assets impaired in case of improper handling or use.

Proper use:
Through the input assembly (flange and diaphragm) the turbo coupling with constant
fill type TM1 and/or DTM1 is suitable for mounting on combustion engines and is pro-
vided to transmit the torque from the driving engine to the Voith Schneider propeller.
The power allowed at a specific coupling fill (Operating fluid and Fill) is indicated on the
cover sheet of this manual. Use for another purpose or beyond it, e.g. for higher po-
wers or speeds, is not considered being in accordance with the regulations.
The manufacturer is not liable for damages resulting from improper use. The risk is to
be borne solely by the user.
Spare parts must comply with the requirements determined by Voith.
This is guaranteed when original spare parts are being used.
Spare parts from other suppliers may, under circumstances, change the characteris-
tics of the unit and lead to substantial defects, for which Voith cannot assume respon-
sibility.

For repair, only use appropriate workshop equipment. Professional maintenance or


repair can only be guaranteed by the manufacturer.

3.2 General information with regard to dangerous situations

For all work performed on the turbo coupling, please observe the local regu-
lations for prevention of accidents!

DANGER!

– Working on the turbo coupling:


For all work performed on the turbo coupling ensure that both, driving engine
and driven machine have stopped running and startup is absolutely im-
possible!
Start to work only after the coupling has cooled down below 40°C, otherwise
there is a risk of burns!

– Temperature rise in the turbo coupling:


The coupling temperature rises during operation.
Please provide a guard for protection against contact with the coupling!
However, ventilation of coupling must not be impaired.
Never use fluids to cool down the coupling!

– Rotating parts:
Rotating parts, for example, the turbo coupling itself and exposed shaft parts
must be protected against contact by a guard! However, ventilation of
coupling must not be impaired.
Never operate the coupling without these guards!

– Sprayed off operating fluid:


In the event of thermal overload of the turbo coupling, the fusible plugs respond.
Operating fluid is discharged through these fusible plugs.
Please ensure that the sprayed-off operating fluid cannot get in contact with
persons! Danger of burning!

– Electrical components:
Contact with exposed or free terminals, cables and equipment may cause
most severe injuries or death!
In the event of a defect, also assemblies potential-free during operation may
be conductive.

3.3 Important information with regard to operation

ATTENTION!

– Sprayed-off and discharged operating fluid:


The fusible plugs respond in the event of thermal overload. Operating fluid is
discharged through these fusible plugs.
Please provide a catch pan of sufficient size!
The operating fluid must not get in contact with hot engine or machine parts!
Danger of fire! Please provide a corresponding guard!

– Power transmission:
The cover sheet of this operating manual shows a possible power to be
transmitted at a specific input speed and a specific coupling fill. These
values describe a permissible working point for steady operation of coupling.
Voith Turbo's approval is required for steady operation of the coupling at a
different working point!

– Temperature rise in the turbo coupling:


– The coupling temperature rose during operation due to slip. The guard
must allow sufficient air circulation.
– The following temperatures must not be exceeded:

ATTENTION!
Temperatures are valid for application within the power diagram!
In case of deviations, please consult Voith Turbo.
– When reaching the coupling temperature indicated in the cover sheet, the Me-
chanical Thermal Switch Unit (MTS) will respond, see Chapter 16.1. An alert
signal has to be initiated and the driving condition has to be adapted according-
ly.
– When reaching the coupling temperature indicated in the cover sheet, the fu-
sible plugs will respond. The solder core of the fusible plug will melt, operating
fluid escape and the power flow will be interrupted.

– Temperature rise of the pedestal bearings:

– During steady operation (continuous operation) the temperature of the


pedestal bearings must not exceed 120°C.
– Alarm must be given at a pedestal bearing temperature of 120°C, see chap-

– Voith Turbo's approval is required if you want to exceed the pedestal
bearing temperature for a longer time.

3.4 Staff qualification


The staff in charge of any work to be done on the coupling
– must be reliable,
– must have the legal minimum age,
– must be trained, instructed and authorized with regard to the intended work.

3.5 Product observation


We are under legal obligation to observe our products, even after shipment.
Please therefore inform us about anything that might be of interest to us. For example:  You will find

4 Function, Types

4.1 Operation

The Voith turbo coupling transmits the torque by the mass forces of a fluid circulating
between the input side pump impeller (P) and the output side turbine wheel (T)
(Fig. 1). The runners have radial blades.
The operating fluid is accelerated by the input torque in the pump impeller and produ-
ces an equal output torque in the turbine wheel in which it is decelerated.
The fluid can only circulate and a torque be transmitted if there is a pressure difference
between pump impeller and turbine wheel, which means that the turbine wheel has to
rotate slower than the impeller. This speed difference (slip) and thus the amount of
torque transmitted can be varied to suit the operating conditions by the design data of
the turbo coupling and its fill level.
The turbo coupling guarantees a relieved driving engine run-up by limiting the torque
during startup.
If shocks occur during operation, the turbo coupling is able to protect the engine, the
gear unit and the Voith Schneider propeller against overloading. However, in case of
sudden blocking of the propeller, the diesel engine can be stopped.

As the torque is transmitted by means of the operating fluid, sudden shocks and torsio-

4.4 Description
The turbo coupling is installed between driving engine and gearbox or Voith Schneider
propeller.
The connection with the engine is flexible using a diaphragm.
The driving engine must take over axial guidance of turbo coupling, as the output side
pedestal bearing is designed as floating bearing.
The pedestal bearing is used as support on the output shaft and the pilot bearing (self-
aligning roller bearing) on the input side of turbo coupling.

5 As Delivered Condition / Scope of

– The turbo coupling is assembled completely ready for installation, however, without
oil fill.
– The input and loose parts assemblies (see parts list, chapter 18.1) are packed se-
parately and shipped.

6 Tightening Torques

ATTENTION!
Oil the screws slightly before inserting them!

For tightening torques of individual screws, please see the respective coupling as-
sembly plan, chapter 18.2.

7 Coupling Installation
DANGER!
Please observe, in particular, chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo
coupling!

WARNING!
Damaged slings (ropes, chains etc.) or those with insufficient carrying capacity
may break under load, with the consequence of most serious or even fatal inju-
ries!
Check the lifting appliances and slings for
– sufficient carrying capacity,
– sound condition.

Keep away and never walk below suspended loads!

7.1 Preparation

 Provide suitable tools and lifting appliances. Please observe the turbo coupling
weight!

Note!
The turbo coupling weight is mentioned on the cover sheet of this operating manual. In
addition, the weight is stamped by figure stamps on the outer flange diameter of coup-
ling.
Tightening torques see arrangement drawing.

7.2 Installation
7.2.1 How to install the diaphragm assembly

The diaphragm assembly is shipped in components.

 Grease felt strip (2740) and insert it in bearing cover (2730).


 Fill half of free space in the bearing cover (2730) behind the self-aligning roller
bearing (2732) with high-temperature grease NLGI Class 2 (see Chapter 12.4 and
Assembly plan in Chapter 18.2). For grease quantity refer to note in Assembly

 Press self-aligning roller bearing (2732) into bearing cover (2730).

 If not yet mounted, screw lubricating nipple (2731) into bearing flange (2720).
 Let bearing cover with mounted self-aligning roller bearing and with the felt strip
pointing up down on a flat, clean rest.
 Lay diaphragm (2710) onto the prepared bearing cover.
 Slip O-ring (2750) unrifled over, do not roll it.
 Put on the bearing flange so that the fastening bores are in line. Observe balancing
marks, if any.
 Screw the diaphragm group to the customer-provided shaft using bolts (2780).

7.2.2 How to install the pedestal bearing (2810)

 Set the turbo coupling up for installation of pedestal bearing with the output shaft
pointing up. Please see installation and operating manual, chapter 20.1.

ATTENTION!
Pedestal bearing is designed as non-locating bearing.
For first delivery, the fixed rings have already been removed at Voith’s.
When exchanging the pedestal bearing make sure to remove the fixed rings.

7.3 Turbo coupling installation

 Fix the turbo coupling on a sufficiently dimensioned lifting appliance (Figures 4 and
5). The lifting appliance suspension lugs are to be provided on the coupling itself
and on the output shaft.
Suspend coupling type TM1 via a shackle. The customer has to provide the shack-
le and to fix it to at least 2 circumferrential screws of the turbo coupling.
 Lift the turbo coupling carefully and put it down, together with the pedestal bearing,
on the foundation at the assembly site. On the input side, push the shaft end of
coupling shaft (0040) carefully into the self-aligning roller bearing (2732).
 Bolt the diaphragm (2710) and the turbo coupling together using screws (2760) and
washers (2770 and 2790, if applicable).
 Bolt the pedestal bearing housing, on the output side, slightly with the foundation.
Align the height largely to prevent bending of diaphragm.
 Pull the provisionally bolted pedestal bearing apart so that the position of self-
aligning roller bearing can still be corrected according to the assembly plan.
 Now re-assemble the pedestal bearing and bolt it tightly with the foundation.

7.4 Protective covers

7.4.1 Turbo coupling

ATTENTION!
Provide the turbo coupling with a protective cover at site. This protecttive cover
shall prevent the contact with the rotating turbo coupling and retain operating
oil that might be sprayed off.

Note!
– The protective cover must not hinder heat dissipation.
– As far as possible, use perforated sheet or expanded metal.
– In the area of the fusible plugs, provide the cover with solid wall to collect any
operating fluid that might be sprayed off.
– Observe the proposal regarding the protective cover in Chapter 18.3 and the
instructions from the assembly plan in Chapter 18.2.
By all means observe the instructions and do not change the design of the
protective cover (chapter 18.3) (contact Voith Turbo, if necessary).
– Supply and exhaust air openings have to be available!
– Provide suitably sized openings for lubrication of the self-aligning roller bearing
(2732) via lubricating nipples (2731). Close the openings with a cap.

7.4.2 Pedestal bearings

ATTENTION!
Design the guards to be installed at site on the input and output shaft so that

8 Alignment

DANGER!
Please observe, in particular chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo coup-

8.1 Alignment tolerances


ATTENTION!
Unacceptable alignment errors cause material defects! Please observe, in
particular, displacements due to temperature changes.

Through a connecting coupling, the turbo coupling is connected with the shaft journal
on the output side. Keep radial and angular displacement between turbo coupling and
shaft journal as small as possible! Perfect alignment increases the lifetime and reliabili-
ty of your unit!
Regarding the alignment values of the connecting coupling to be procured at site,
please refer to the relevant alignment manual of the manufacturer.

8.2 Alignment

 Install the turbo coupling.


 Fix a dial gauge on the engine shaft, the measuring tip must be in contact with the
diaphragm (Fig. 6), i.e. the contact must be in the outer flexible area.
 Shim the pedestal bearing to indicate a maximum axial runout of 0.4 mm on dia-
phragm operating temperature, when rotating it by 360°.
 Do not distort the diaphragm in axial direction, check absolute eccentricity of dia-
phragm in at least 3 positions using a ruler (Fig. 7).

 Fix the output side pedestal bearing on the foundation. Observe on bearing installa-
tion that the stationary bearing rings are not installed.
 Check alignment after tightening the screws, correct alignment, if necessary.
 Pin the pedestal bearing with the foundation.

10 Fill, Level Check and Draining

– Turbo couplings are supplied without fill.


– If the operating fluid is included in the scope of supply, it will be supplied in a
separate container.
– For tightening torques of fusible plugs, filler plugs, blind screws and sight glasses,
please see the coupling assembly plan in chapter 18.2.

DANGER!
Please observe, in particular, chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo
coupling!

CAUTION!
The operating fluids may cause irritations or inflammation when in contact with
skin and mucous membranes.
Please always wear protective glasses for any work to be done in connection
with the operating fluid!
Should you get any operating fluid in your eyes, rinse them immediately using a
lot of water and consult a physician!
After you finished your work, clean your hands carefully with soap.

ATTENTION!
– Comply with the fill level mentioned on the cover sheet of this operating
manual.
– Do not overfill! This would lead to an excessive and high internal pressure in
the coupling that may destroy the coupling.
– Impurities in the operating fluid cause an increased wear of the coupling.
Observe that any containers, funnels, filling tubes etc. used for filling the
coupling, are clean.
– Do not mix different types of operating fluids.

10.1 How to fill the coupling

 Turn the coupling until the filler plug (item 390) is on top.
 Unscrew the filler plug.
 Remove the top fusible plug (item 395) for pressure compensation.
 Fill the specified operating fluid quantity into the filler plug opening.
 During filling filter the operating fluid using a filter screen (approx. 40µm).
 Tighten the filler plug; ensure that the original sealing rings used are in sound con-
dition.
 The coupling is provided with a sight glass, tighten the fusible plug and ensure that
the original sealing rings used are in sound condition.

10.3.2 How to check the fill level on the pedestal bearing

ATTENTION!
– Check the oil level daily when the unit is stopped by means of the oil dip stick
(Fig. 9). Top up oil only when the minimum mark is reached.
– Do not overfill the pedestal bearing! Oil leaks out in case of overfill, see the
information contained in the installation and operating manual (min. and
max. marks) in chapter 20.1.

10.4 How to drain the coupling

ATTENTION!
Operating fluids disposed of improperly, may cause most severe environmental
damage! On disposal, please observe the applicable laws as well as the manu-
facturer's or supplier's instructions!

 Provide suitable containers to collect the operating fluid. Ensure that the volume of
containers is sufficient!

 Turn the coupling so that one fusible plug is at the bottom point.
 Remove this fusible plug.
 For venting purposes, remove one filler or fusible plug that is opposite the fusible
plug already removed.
 After draining the coupling, retighten the plugs. Ensure that the original sealing
rings used are in sound condition.

11 Commissioning

DANGER!
Please observe, in particular, chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo
coupling!

Please observe the following information for commissioning:

– The turbo coupling may be used in any direction of rotation.


– The direction of rotation of driven machine may be specified! The direction of rota-
tion of engine must be in accordance with the specified direction of rotation of
driven machine!

ATTENTION!
– Never operate the turbo coupling without operating fluid!
– Never operate the turbo coupling without protective cover!
– The following temperatures must no be exceeded:
See table in Chapter 3.3.
 Observe – On account of the type of bearings used for standard turbo couplings of size
chapter 12 on 650, 750, 866 and 1150 at least one standstill is required within a period of 3
page 29 months.
– On account of the type of bearings used for standard turbo couplings of size
1000, at least one standstill is required once a week.

Checks after commissioning:


 Check the turbo coupling for leaks. We recommend to apply chalk to the inside of
the protective cover. Sprayed off oil becomes easily visible.
 Check alignment. Release pedestal bearing and adjust the same, if necessary.
 Check the lubricant filled in the pedestal bearings and check for leaks.

12.1 Operating fluids and lubricants


 Observe Have an analysis of the oil made for its viscosity, aging and water contents. Should
chapter 10 these data no longer meet the oil supplier's values, change the oil fill ( Chapter 9,
from page 24 10).

Operating fluids and lubricants disposed of improperly, may cause most severe
environmental damage! On disposal, please observe the applicable laws as well
as the manufacturer's or supplier's instructions!

12.2 Oil leakage


In case of rarely occurring oil leakage off the coupling, the following sealings possibly
need to be replaced:

– Teflon flat seal on either side of the intermediate piece (0995)
– Shaft sealing rings (0160) and (0170)

12.3 Outside cleaning

12.5 Fusible plugs

 The fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damage due to thermal over-
load.
 When the response temperature is reached, the solder core of fusible plug melts
and the operating fluid escapes.

ATTENTION!
– Overheating will destroy the turbo coupling!
– Switch off the driving engine immediately on response of a fusible plug!
– Use original fusible plugs only, with the response temperature mentioned on
the cover sheet of this operating manual!
– Do not replace any fusible plugs by blind screws!
– On response of one fusible plug, replace also the remaining fusible plugs!
– After installing new fusible plugs, fill in new operating fluid! Observe chap-

14 Servicing

DANGER!
Please observe, in particular, chapter 3 (Safety) when working on the turbo
coupling!

WARNING!
Damaged slings (ropes, chains etc.) or those with insufficient carrying capacity
may break under load, with the consequence of most serious or even fatal
injuries!
Check the lifting appliances and slings for
– sufficient carrying capacity,
– sound condition.

ATTENTION!
Professional repair can only be guaranteed by the manufacturer!

Note!
The weight of turbo coupling is indicated on the cover sheet. The weight is also
stamped on the coupling flange outer diameter.
Tightening torques see arrangement drawing.

14.1 Turbo coupling removal

14.1.1 How to remove the turbo coupling

 Drain the turbo coupling (see chapter 10.4, page 27).


 Hang the turbo coupling on a sufficiently dimensioned lifting appliance. The lifting
appliance suspension is to be provided on the coupling itself and the output shaft
(Fig. 4, Fig. 5, page 16).
 Release the connecting coupling between turbo coupling and Voith Schneider pro-
peller and separate it.
 Release pedestal bearing (2810) from the foundation.
 Release the turbo coupling from the diaphragm (2710) after removal of screws

 Lift the turbo coupling out by means of the lifting appliance and set it down on a
wooden base. Secure it against lateral rolling away and tilting.

14.2 Turbo coupling disassembly

14.2.1 How to replace the shaft sealing rings

14.2.1.1 Coupling type 650 up to 1000 TM1

 Remove the screws (0850) on the output side.


 Pull sealing ring cover (0830) off the coupling shell (0190) using screws.
 Force the shaft sealing rings (0160) off the sealing ring covers.
 Remove bolts (0810) at input side.
 Pull sealing ring cover (0800) off outer wheel (0300) using screws.
 Pull shaft sealing ring (0170) off sealing ring cover (0800).
 The shaft sealing rings are pressed into the sealing ring cover and are destroyed
when forced out.
 Clean the sealing ring covers from old sealing compound. Do not damage the cover
sealing surfaces towards runner parts!
 Apply oil and temperature-resistant sealing compound (e.g. Hylomar) to the new
shaft sealing rings. Press the shaft sealing rings into the sealing ring cover using a
mounting ring (Fig. 11).

14.2.1.2 Coupling type 1150 TM1

 Remove bolts (0850) at input and output side.


 Pull sealing ring cover (0800) off coupling shell (0190) or outer wheel (0300) using
screws.
 Pull shaft sealing rings (0170) off the sealing ring covers.
 The shaft sealing rings are pressed into the sealing ring cover and are destroyed
when forced out.
 Clean the sealing ring covers from old sealing compound. Do not damage the cover
sealing surfaces towards runner parts!
 Apply oil and temperature-resistant sealing compound (e.g. Hylomar) to the new
shaft sealing rings. Press the shaft sealing rings into the sealing ring cover using a
mounting ring (Fig. 11).

14.2.1.3 Coupling type DTM1

 Remove bolts (0850) at input and output side.


 Pull sealing ring cover (0800) off outer wheels (0305) using screws.
 Pull shaft sealing rings (0170) off the sealing ring covers.

when forced out.
 Clean the sealing ring covers from old sealing compound. Do not damage the cover
sealing surfaces towards runner parts!

14.2.2 How to check the coupling shaft

 Check the shaft sealing ring contact surfaces of coupling shaft (0040) for running
marks and other damages.
 In case of running marks or other damages, remove the coupling shaft! For further
procedure, see chapters 14.2.3 through 14.2.5.

14.2.3 How to disassemble the coupling Type TM1 further

 Set the turbo coupling down on a wooden base with the output side on top.
 Remove the screws (0540) at the periphery.
 Press the coupling shell (0190) off the outer wheel (0300) using puller screws.
 Dismount the coupling shell together with the ball and roller bearing (0130) from the
coupling shaft (0040).
 Turn the turbo coupling so that the input side is on top.
 Push off cover (0800 at 1150 TM1) or (0830 at 650-1000 TM1) respectiveley after
removal of the screws (0850 at 1150 TM1) or (0810 at 650-1000 TM1).
 Remove the circlip (0150).
 Pull outer wheel (0300) with mounted grooved ball bearing (0130 at 1150 TM1) or
(0140 at 650-1000 TM1) off the coupling shaft.
 In case of running marks on the coupling shaft, dismount the inner wheel (0090) by
removing the screws (0110).

14.2.4 How to disassemble the coupling Type DTM1 further

 Set the turbo coupling down on a wooden base with the output side on top.
 Remove the screws (0540) at the periphery.
 Extract outer wheel 2 (0305) from the intermediate piece (0995) using puller screws
and remove the grooved ball bearing (0130) from the coupling shaft.
 Turn the turbo coupling so that the input side is on top.
 Push up the cover (0800) and/or (0830) after removing screws (0850).
 Remove the circlip (0150).
 Remove outer wheel 1 (0305) with mounted intermediate piece (0995) and grooved
ball bearing (0130) from the coupling shaft.
 Extract outer wheel 1 from the intermediate piece using puller screws.
 In case of running marks on the coupling shaft, dismount the inner wheels (0095)
by removing the screws (0110).

14.2.5 How to machine the coupling shaft

 Check the shaft sealing ring contact surfaces of the coupling shaft for running
marks.

ATTENTION!
Please consult Voith Turbo in case of heavy running marks (hair lines).

 Regrind and polish the contact surface in case of minor hair lines on the shaft
sealing ring contact surfaces.

ATTENTION!
Please observe when grinding:
– Position the coupling shaft so that the bearing seats are concentric. For shaft
sealing contact surfaces, concentricity of bearing seats is essential.
– Perform grinding nontwisting without thrust in one grinding process. Then smoothen
the shaft sealing ring contact surfaces by polishing (max. roughness about 2 µm).
– For a proper pretensioning of the shaft sealing rings, it is only allowed to fall by a
certain factor below the coupling shaft diameter:

14.2.6 How to replace the bearings

 Coupling type TM1:


Extract the grooved ball bearings (0130) or (0140) from the outer wheel (0300) and
coupling shell (0190) by means of an appropriate device.
Coupling type DTM1:
Extract the grooved ball bearings (0130) from the outer wheels (0305) by means of
an appropriate device.
 To check the tolerance ring seats, remove the tolerance rings (0210) or (0320). In
case of slight impressions, re-install the tolerance rings in offset position.

Please consult Voith Turbo in case of heavy impressions.

14.3 Turbo coupling reassembly

14.3.1 Turbo coupling Type TM1 reassembly

 Clean the sealing surfaces from residues of sealing compounds.


 Put a new original insulating disk (0096) on the coupling shaft.
 Put the inner wheel (0090) and clamping ring (0100) on the coupling shaft and bolt
using the screws (0110).
 Apply an oil and temperature-resistant sealing compound (e.g. Hylomar) to the sea-
ling surfaces of outer wheel, coupling shell and sealing ring covers and let is dry for
about 10 minutes.
 Lay the Teflon flat seal on the outer wheel (Fig. 12).
 Slide the outer wheel with grooved ball bearing (0130 at 1150 TM1) or (0140 at
650-1000 TM1) on the coupling shaft (0040) and secure using the circlip (0150).
 Insert the O-seal (0820) or (0860) into the sealing ring cover (0800).
 Put the sealing ring cover into the outer wheel and tighten using the screws (0850
at 1150 TM1) or (0810 at 650-1000 TM1).
 Set the coupling down on a wooden base with the input shaft at the bottom.
 Slide the coupling shell (0190) with mounted ball bearing (0130) on the coupling
shaft (0040).
 Bolt the coupling shell and the outer wheel to the periphery using the screws
(0540).
 Slide the sealing ring cover (0800 at 1150 TM1) or (0830 at 650-1000 TM1) into the
coupling shell (0190) and fasten using the screws (0850).

14.3.2 Turbo coupling Type DTM1 reassembly

 Clean the sealing surfaces from residues of sealing compounds.

 Put the inner wheels (0095), the thrust ring (0105) and the clamping ring (0100) on
the coupling shaft and bolt using the screws (0110).
 Apply an oil and temperature-resistant sealing compound (e.g. Hylomar) to the
sealing surfaces of outer wheels, intermediate piece and sealing ring covers and let
is dry for about 10 minutes.
 Lay the Teflon flat seal on the outer wheels (Fig. 12).
 Slide the outer wheel 1 with grooved ball bearing (0130) on the coupling shaft
(0040) and secure using the circlip (0150).
 Insert the O-seal (0860) into the sealing ring cover (0800).
Information: Turbo couplings of Size 750 and 866 are not provided with O-rings.
 Put the sealing ring cover into the outer wheel 1 and tighten using the screws
(0850).
 Set the coupling down on a wooden base with the input shaft at the bottom.
 Slide the intermediate piece (0995) via the inner wheels on the outer wheel 1 and
bolt at the outer periphery using the screws (0540).
 Slide the outer wheel 2 with grooved ball bearing (0130) on the coupling shaft
(0040).
 Insert the sealing ring cover into the outer wheel 2 and fasten using the screws
(0850).
 Bolt the outer wheel 2 and the intermediate piece at the outer periphery using the
screws (0540).

16 Temperature Monitoring

16.1 Turbo coupling

The mechanical thermal switch unit (MTS) monitors the turbo coupling temperature.  Operating manual
3626-011800 is

On excess temperature, the switching (see web page).

17.1 Spare parts

We recommend to store the following parts:

– Thermal switching element (1500) according to parts list, chapter 18.1 (1 switching
element per turbo coupling).
– Fusible plugs (0395) and sealing rings (0405) according to parts list, chapter 18.1
(1 set per turbo coupling).
– Upon request, we will submit a separate offer for other spare parts required for re-
pair.

17.2 Storage, protection against corrosion of spare parts

Note!
Original spare parts supplied are protected against corrosion.

17.2.1 Metal parts

 Check the protection against corrosion yearly. If necessary, clean the parts and
apply new corrosion preventing oil.

17.2.2 Rubber parts

 Check the protection against ageing yearly. If necessary, clean the parts and re-
new the corrosion prevention.
 Store rubber parts free of stress.

To be observed on site:

Equipment installed or ready for installation:


Especially ensure that the equipment preservation is effective since this equipment
is frequently exposed to additional hazards, such as water, major contamination
and mechanical damage.

Complete equipment mounted on foundation:


That means measures enabling a supplementary internal protection if standstill
times up to about 12 months are expected and if the original preservation is no
longer ensured due to interventions.

Fill the units with operating oil free from water. Dependent of the progress of
assembly, the following action can be taken in 1 to 2 months intervals:

- Equipment ready for operation:


Startup and operation for a short time (approx. 5 minutes) only to wet the inner
parts with oil; do not run warm.

- Equipment not ready for operation:


a. Units with electric auxiliary lube pump or oil pump and oil tank ready for operation:
Start the pump, rotate the equipment, if possible. Move the movable parts (e.g.
joints) and regrease.

b. Units without electric startup lubricating pump or oil pump ready for operation:
Drain the oil from the tank, spray oil through the housing openings in the interior
space and pump oil through the piping by a separate oil pump, running time approx.
5 minutes, rotate the equipment, if possible. Move movable parts (e.g. joints) and
regrease.

ATTENTION!
Prior to filling in the operating fluid, consult the supplier with regard to its
compatibility with the internal preservation agent.

20.1.1 Applicability

20.1.2 General
The assembly and operating instructions apply to oil-lubricated housings for support
bearings for marine shafting with SKF radial spherecal roller bearings of different
sizes, mounted on adapter sleeves as per the above SKF drawing numbers. The
housings are fitted with oil flinger rings, located on both sides of the bearing, with radial
oil outlet and additional dust-proof seal in the single-piece housing covers. Oil level
checks can be carried out using the oil dip-stick when the bearing is not in operation.
Additional face-side mounting holes in the housing covers enable additional air baffles
to be fitted.

20.1.3 Preparation
Refer to the assembly drawings corresponding to the above drawing numbers and lay
out the individual housing components. Select the appropriate adapter sleeve and
locknut indicated on the drawing and prepare the SKF spherical roller bearing in its
original packaging. All
parts of the bearing (housing, shafts etc.) must be carefully cleaned and any burrs
removed. Any preservative still adhering to the brand-new bearings does not need to
be removed.

Housing support surface


To ensure that the bearing can function properly, the support surface for the housings
of the support bearings for marine shafting must be produced to a roughness equal to
or better than Ra = 12.5 µm. The flatness tolerance must comply with IT7.

If the bearing is mounted on an adapter sleeve the diametrical tolerance of the shaft
must be produced in accordance with h6, and form tolerance in accordance with IT5.

Prior to assembly, cut the two dust-proof seals to length following manufacturer’s
instructions and carefully insert into the housing covers.

20.1.4 Assembly

To ensure that the housing functions properly when the shafting is inclined, the various
assembly steps must be carried out in such an order that the housing cover with the
seat for the oil dip-stick (item 2) is placed on the lowest side of the housing (i.e. side
with the highest oil level). First slip the housing cover (item 2), oil flinger ring (item 4),
baffle (item 5), flat gasket item 7) and - if the bearing is to serve as locating bearing - a
locating ring (item 15) onto the shaft.

ATTENTION!
Only use a locating ring with a locating bearing!

Then place the spherical roller bearing of the appropriate size onto the adapter sleeve
incl. locking plate and screw on the appropriate locknut loosely. Insert the shaft and
bearing into the housing; the bearing outer ring must be easy to move inside the
housing. Then on the other side of the housing, slip the locating ring (item 15 - if
necessary), the baffle (item 5), the flat gasket (item 7) and the second oil flinger ring
onto the shaft, observing the orientation indicated in the drawing. Also place housing
cover (item 3) in position.
Match up and align mounting position of the housing (item 1) with the overall assembly
plan. The maximum admissible misalignment of the housing axis with respect to the
shaft axis is 0.5°. Align the spherical roller bearings with the centre of the housing and
tighten using the locknut; in the case of a tapered bore, the radial internal clearance
must be reduced in line with SKF guidelines (see Appendix page 5 or SKF General
Catalogue).

ATTENTION!
The adapter sleeve must sit smoothly and securely on the shaft. Serious damage can
be caused if the bearing slides on the adapter sleeve or the adapter sleeve slips
around the shaft.
During assembly please check the reduction in bearing clearance inside the bearing
and compare with the minimum admissible radial internal clearance given in the cata-
logue.

After mounting the bearing, position the oil flinger ring located on the side with the oil
dip-stick at the distance given in the drawing and secure with two grub screws (item
12).
Screw the housing cover and baffle onto the housing with the screws and spring
washers supplied (item 8/14). The oil collecting chamber must be located at the
bottom.

On the opposite side of the housing, push on the oil flinger ring so that it abuts the
adapter sleeve and secure tightly to the shaft using the grub screws. Then attach the
baffle and the housing cover. Here too, the oil collecting chamber must be located at
the bottom.
Slip sealing rings (item 11/13) onto the screw plugs and screw in.

Before pouring the oil in, check the alignment again. Maximum misalignment of
housing axis with respect to the shaft axis is 0.5°. Should any subsequent adjustments
be necessary, the feet of the housing should be balanced out using shims the same

After adjusting the respective housing, pour in the appropriate volume of oil (see
2014-11 / Rev. 0 , Printed in Germany.

Appendix) for the size of the housing through the holes in the cover; then seal the
holes with the screw plugs (item 10). Insert the oil dip-stick (item 6) and remove again
carefully. Where you can see the level of the oil, mark the MAX. level on the oil dip-
stick. Find out the MIN. level corresponding to the housing size in the Appendix,
measure it out and make a notch below the MAX. marking on the oil dip-stick.

20.1.5 Lubrication
To ensure adequate lubrication and cooling of the radial spherical roller bearings,
mineral oils with a viscosity complying with ISO VG 100 or higher must be used for all
housing sizes.

20.1.6 Commissioning and maintenance


During operation no special maintenance is required. It is recommended that after
commissioning the bearing temperature be checked every few days. In principle, when
the bearing is not in operation, the oil level should be kept near the MAX. marking.

When the bearing is being run in, a transparent, white fluid can seep out around the
dust-proof seal (impregnating oil from Ramilon seal). This does not affect the seal or
functioning of the bearing.

Owing to the small volume of oil in the housings, the oil should be topped up carefully
during assembly and changed at the intervals recommended by the oil supplier.

4. Thermometer with head-mounted Transmitter

by installing a 2-wire transmitter (output signal 4...20 mA) in the

wire circuits for resistance thermometers and compensation ca-

When using the transmitter, please take notice of the following:

5. Mounting and Operation


5.1 Installation

The thermometer (thermocouple, resistance thermometer) must

1 Preface

1.1 General information


This manual will support you in using the mechanical thermal switch unit (MTS) in a
safe, proper and economical way. If you observe the information contained in this
manual, you will
– increase the reliability and lifetime of the installation,
– avoid any risks,
– reduce repairs and downtimes.

This manual must


– always be available at the MTS site,
– be read and used by every person who works on the unit.

The mechanical thermal switch unit is manufactured to the latest design standards
and approved safety regulations. Nevertheless, the user's or third parties' life may be
endangered or the unit and other material assets impaired in case of improper hand-
ling or use.

Spare parts:
Spare parts must comply with the requirements determined by Voith.
This is guaranteed when original spare parts are being used.
Installation and/or use of non-original spare parts may negatively change the mecha-
nical properties of the Voith Turbo coupling and thus have an adverse impact on the
safety.
Voith is not liable for damages resulting from use of non-original spare parts.

Only personnel qualified and trained in commissioning, maintenance and repair is


allowed to do this work.

The mechanical thermal switch unit for advance warning (MTS) monitors the tempera-
ture of Voith turbo couplings.
Use for another purpose, e.g. for operating conditions which were not agreed, is not
considered as proper use.

Proper use also includes observing the installation and operating manual.

The manufacturer is not liable for damages resulting from improper use and the risk is
to be borne solely by the user.

2.2 General information as to hazards

WARNING!
– For all work performed on the mechanical thermal switch unit please observe
the local regulations for prevention of accidents as well as the regulations
for installation of electrical equipment!
– For the use of mechanical thermal switch unit in hazardous areas (switch
type ExM 61 D) observe the local regulations applicable to electrical equip-
ment in hazardous areas! Modifications on the switch including connecting
cable are not permitted.

Sprayed-off and discharged operating fluid:


– In the event of thermal overload of the turbo coupling the fusible plugs res-
pond. Operating fluid is discharged through these fusible plugs.
– If the fusible plugs spray off, immediately switch off drive!
– Electrical devices located near the coupling need to be protected against
spraying!
– Please ensure that the sprayed-off operating fluid cannot get in contact with
persons! Danger of burning!
– Persons being in the surrounding of turbo coupling have to wear goggles.
Spraying off hot operating fluid means a risk of losing sight!
– Make sure that spraying operating fluid cannot get into contact with hot
machine parts, heaters, sparks or open flames! There is a risk of fire!
– In order to prevent danger (e.g. risk of skidding, risk of fire) caused by esca-
ping oil, remove same immediately!
– Please provide a catch pan of sufficient size, if required!

2.3 Staff qualification

The staff in charge of any work on the mechanical thermal switch unit must

– be trained, instructed and authorized for the intended work.

3 Applications,
Characteristics of MTS
The mechanical thermal switch unit (MTS) is a monitoring system for Voith turbo
couplings.

– The MTS provides easy temperature monitoring of turbo couplings.

– In case of overtemperature and, dependent on the application, shutdown of


drive motor/engine can be arranged or the user be warned.
– We recommend drive motor/engine shutdown.

– If the overtemperature is detected in time, the loss of coupling fill through the fusib-
le plugs can be avoided. Downtimes are reduced.

– The MTS switching element needs to be replaced after switching operation.

EX PROTECTION!
The thermal switching element MTS is used in potentially explosive areas to
monitor the temperature. The signals indicate pre-alarm. The MTS does not limit
the maximum surface temperature.

4 Function of MTS

The mechanical thermal switch unit (MTS) consists of two components:

4.1 Switching element

– The switching element is inserted into the turbo coupling outer wheel instead of a
blind screw, thus providing a thermal contact between switching element and ope-
rating fluid.
– In exceptional cases, when the space is restricted, it is permitted to install the swit-
ching element in the coupling shell. Please consult Voith Turbo.
– A spring-loaded pin and a chamber filled with solder is integrated in the switching
element. The response temperature of switching element corresponds to the res-
ponse temperature of solder.
– Below the response temperature the solder keeps the pin in its original position.
When the response temperature is reached, the solder releases the pin and a
compression spring presses the pin outside.
– After each MTS response, the switching element is no longer fit for use and has to
be replaced.

4.2 Switch

– Dependent on the space available, the switch is installed parallel or in radial posi-
tion to the turbo coupling axis. The switch is provided with a pivotable switching fin-
ger.
– The switch is wired as snap-action connection with a make-and-break contact.

4.3 Interaction of MTS components


If the turbo coupling with screwed in switching element rotates, then the switching will
permanently pass the switch.
The pin of released switching element actuates the switching finger during coupling
rotation causing the switch to switch over.

5.2.1 Switch ExM 61 D

Application:
Switch ExM 61 D complies with the European standards for explosion protection
EN 60079-0, EN 60079-1 and EN 60079-3 and is therefore designed for use in the
explosive areas of zone 1 and 2 as well as zone 21 and 22 as per DIN EN 60079-14
and EN 61241-14.

Design / Function:
Switch ExM 61 D contains an explosion-proof contact unit, type ExM 14.
The contact unit is provided with cast-in cable.
The contact unit contains a single-pole double-throw switch (SPDT switch) (jacket
color: blue, brown, and black).

6 Installation

– Observe, in particular, chapter 2 (Safety)!
– On installation please observe that all components are potential-free!
– Fusible plugs
Fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damages due to thermal
overload. Even when the MTS is used, the fusible plugs must not get repla-
ced by blind screws or by fusible plugs with other rated response temperatu-
res!

6.2 Installation of switching element and switch

ATTENTION!
To avoid any damage install the switching element and the switch after instal-
ling and prior to filling the turbo coupling.

 Instead of a blind screw, insert the switching element with seal ring into the turbo
coupling outer wheel.

6.3 Connection

Note!
– Wiring of MTS is not our scope of supply!
– If switching element and fusible plugs are installed in the same outer part,
we basically recommend to switch off the drive on response of MTS!
– The electrical connection may only be carried out by an authorized person.
– We recommend to design the switch connection in a way so that both over-
temperature and cable break result in an overtemperature warning (connect
break contact).

 Connect the switch, observe the switching capacity. Protect the connecting cables  Chapter 5.2,
against damage due to environmental influence! page 12
 The connection cable has to be fixed and laid in a way that it is protected against
mechanical damages.

6.3.1 Connection of switch ExM 61 D (additional information)

Switch ExM 61 D is metal-enclosed. The housing is equipped with an external safety


earth terminal for a maximum of 4 mm². Connection is effected via a cable cast into
the housing of the contact unit. The connecting cable of this switch needs to be fixed
and laid in a manner that it is sufficiently protected against mechanical damages.
It is not allowed to perform any rebuilding or alteration on the switch, which may affect
the explosion protection. Furthermore, DIN EN 60079-14 and EN 61241-14 shall apply
for the installation of electric equipment in potentially explosive areas.

For proper functioning, the switch is to be attached in such a manner that the contact
travel required for switching can safely be reached. During assembly, please observe
that displacing the switch is avoided in any case, even in case of failure. Under no cir-
cumstances must the switch be actuated beyond its inner stop as this may damage
the switch. The switch housing must not be used as a stop. The switch can be
mounted in any desired position.
