Give reasons for the following (p.28)
i. King Tuts body has been subjected to repeated scrutiny because of the immense curiosity about
tuts life and death. He was the last heir of his powerful family…was just a teenager when he
died…laid to rest with large quantities of gold and was eventually forgotten. When his tomb was
discovered, …considered to be a sensational find and the modern world wondered about his life
and the circumstances of his death.
ii. Carter’s investigation was resented because his men removed the mummy’s head and cut off
nearly every joint from his coffin…then reassembled the body on a layer of sand in a wooden
box… other archeologists disapproved of this as this left the mummy in a very bad condition
iii. …had to be done to protect the mummy from thieves. If Carter… not removed the mummy from
the coffin, thieves would have evaded the guards and torn the mummy apart to steal the gold
that was buried with the body.
iv. Tuts body was buried with gilded treasures that remain the richest royal collection ever found.
The ancient Egyptians believed…could take their wealth with them when they died. Tut’s
treasures and their eternal brilliance was meant to guarantee his resurrection and a good after
life.
v. Before king Tut came into power, Egypt was ruled by Amenhotep IV who promoted the worship
of Aten, the sun disc…he shocked the country by attacking and smashing the idols of Amun, a
major God. After his death, king Tut reversed all his bad decisions. This included changing his
name from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun (the living image of Amun)
Ray Johnson described him as ‘wacky’ because of his eccentric nature and decisions. According to…,
Akhenaten was crazy because he started one of the strangest periods in the history of ancient
Egypt…changed his name to Akhanaten and moved the capital from Thebes to Akhataten …promoted
the worship of Aten, the sun disc….he shocked the country by attacking and smashing the idols of Amun,
a major God…
2.ii. A CT machine scanned Tuts mummy from head to toe creating 1700 digital Xray images in cross
section. Tuts head was scanned in .62 mm slices to register its complicate structure……. The neck
vertebrae, images of hands, ribcage and a trans section of the skull showed that there was nothing
unnatural or strange about his death.
2.iii. Diagnostic imaging done with the help of machines…helps put together hundreds of Xrays in cross
section like slices of bread to create a 3D virtual body…this has improved….
2.iv. Tut is one of the first mummies to be scanned and studied with a CT Scan. In real life he was an
emperor, the leader of an empire at a very young age. Hence both in life and death, he was majestically
ahead of his countrymen
The role of technology in archaeology
The computed Tomography scan couldn’t solve the mysterious death of Tut, but gave us many clues...
But the Xrays and C.T.scan revealed a startling fact-the breast bone and the front ribs of Tut were
missing. Such a revelation would not have been possible without technological precision. This fact gives
us a clue that Tut, in all likelihood did not die a natural death. Technology hasn’t been able to give us a
definite answer to Tut’s death. However, it has given us a direction to think and proceed. Maybe in
future, technology would solve it for us.
Howard Carter was the British archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb and his mummy in
the year 1922. Howard Carter found out that the ritual resins which were used in the coffin had
hardened, cementing Tut to the bottom of his solid gold coffin and none was able to move the mummy
with the use of simple force. Therefore, he put the coffin in the scorching sun of summertime Egypt with
the idea that it would loosen the resin…But this idea was also unsuccessful... After that, with no way out
he had to use a chisel to separate the mummy from the coffin and this damaged the mummy to a large
extent. Hence his investigation was resented by many.
Why were the Pharaohs buried with tremendous amount of wealth? What was the nature of the
wealth with which King Tut’s mummy was buried? What were the things of daily use which were
buried with him?
The ancient Egyptians believed that there is life after death…why the Pharaohs were buried with
tremendous amount of wealth including things of daily use so that they could use them in the life after
death. The wealth with which King Tut was buried remains the richest royal collection ever found and
this has become part of the pharaoh’s legend. The wealth basically contains different stunning artifacts
of gold… Tut was also buried with everyday things which it was thought he would want in the afterlife
and these things are: board games, a bronze razor, linen undergarments and cases of food and wine.
From the time of the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb back in the year 1922 to the present time the
nature of archaeology has changed….now focuses less on treasure and more on the fascinating details of
life and the intriguing mysteries of death.
