Learning Competency: Demonstrate

how places on Earth may be located
using a coordinate system
(S7LT-IIIJ-13)
Learning Competency: Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate
system (S7ES - IVa - 1)
Objectives: At the end of the one-hour session, the students should be able to:
a. Distinguish the difference between latitude and longitude;
b. Evaluate the importance of learning to locate places using a coordinate system in relation to
people's daily life or job through making an essay;
c. Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using coordinate system.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Latitude and Longitude

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS
 Latitude- Imaginary line on a map or globe that measure distance in degrees North
and degrees South of the equator. It is measured with 180 imaginary lines that form
circles around the Earth east-west, parallel to the equator. A circle of latitude is an
imaginary ring linking all points sharing a parallel.
 Parallels- The circles formed by latitude lines.
 Longitude- Imaginary lines on a map or globe that measure distance in degrees east
or west of the prime meridian.
 Prime Meridian- the great circle on the Earth's surface passing through the North
and South Poles which is considered 0ͦ longitude. The Prime Meridian passes
through Greenwich, England, and is used as a reference point for measuring
longitude east and west.
 Equator- An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a planet or other
celestial body. It is half way between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0
degrees latitude. An equator divides the planet into a Northern Hemisphere and a
Southern Hemisphere. The Earth is widest at its equator.
 Coordinate System- is a method for identifying the location of a point on the Earth.

III. LEARNING TASK

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparatory Activities
Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am!

“Stand up and let us pray. Sophia,

kindly lead the prayer.”

“Before you sit kindly pick up the

pieces of trash under your chair and (The students will follow)
arrange your chairs properly.”

“Monitor who is absent for today?

Very good class! None Ma’am!

1. ELICIT: (5 mins)

 Review students' prior knowledge

through a scenario and allow them to
think.

Imagine you are flying on a plane

where you can see the beautiful clouds
and amazing view, but how do we know
where to go? There aren't any signs
floating in air. So how do pilots know
where to land their planes?
Pilots can use the coordinate system (latitude and
longitude) using a map and a compass to know where
to pass through and where to land.
Very Good! It seems that you’ve
listened very well from your previous
lesson in your previous grade, let us
now proceed to our new lesson.

2. Engage (10 mins)

 The teacher will engage the students

in identifying or matching the
different descriptions of latitude and
longitude. The teacher will prepare all
the materials needed.

Mechanics:
1. Match the following descriptions to the
correct word being described in the
column.

Everyone must participate, just raise

your hands if you want to answer
Let's check your answers,

east or west of the prime meridian. 3. The Prime Meridian in Greenwich is at 0 degrees.
4. These lines are called meridians.
5. The lines running vertically around the Earth.

Your answers are all correct, Very good!

Now let's have a group activity

3. EXPLORE (15 mins)

Guide Questions:
1. Activity a. Are the lines of latitude and longitude visible?
 The teacher will divide the class b. Describe the lines of latitude.
into four groups. c. Describe the lines of longitude.
d. Where is the starting point of the latitude?
Instructions: How about the longitude?
1. Using a globe or a world map, e. If you wish to find 50ͦ N, where should
you will describe lines of latitude you look?
and lines of longitude. f. If you want to find 20ͦ W, where should
2. Answer the guide questions. you look?
3. Write your answers in the
cartolina/ manila paper.

REMINDERS:
1. All must participate with this
activity.
2. Do the activity actively and
minimize your voice so you
won't distract the other
groups.

2. Activity
Instructions:
1. Identify places nearest to the
following rounded latitude and
longitude
2. Use your map or globe.
D. EXPLAIN (20 mins)
 The teacher and the students will
check the activity together.
Afterwards, the teacher will present a
PowerPoint presentation.
Based on your activity, how can we locate
places properly?
We are going to determine and write down latitude
first then longitude.
Great work!Always remember that we
need to write down latitude first then
longitude to find the absolute location of
a country or place. The absolute location
is its exact place on Earth, often given in
terms of latitude and longitude. The
intersection between the line of longitude
and latitude determines the absolute
location of a place. The latitude will
determine whether the direction is North
or South and the longitude will determine
whether the direction is West or East. The
starting point of the latitude is at 0
degrees (equator) and the starting point of
the longitude is at 0 degrees (Prime
Meridian).

What are the five special lines of The five special lines of latitude are the equator,
latitude? Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic circle
and Antarctic circle.

Amazing!

Also, within the Arctic circle you can

also find the North Pole and within the
Antarctic circle you can also find the
South Pole. The Arctic and Antarctic
circle are home of penguins, walrus and
polar bears. The temperature in these
areas doesn't go higher than 10ͦ C. The
areas within the equator from 0 to 20ͦ
approximately has only two seasons
which are the wet and dry season.

Give me at least three countries found The countries found within the equator are the Philippines,
within the equator, Lyka? Vietnam and Taiwan.

Nice work!

The countries found within tropic of Cancer and Capricorn

The areas within tropic of cancer (North) are Japan, Korea, California, Mexico and the Bahamas
and tropic of Capricorn (South) at 23.5
to 60ͦ approximately has four seasons,
namely, summer, winter, spring and fall.

Give me at least five countries found

within tropic of cancer and Capricorn,
Jason?

Excellent!

Now let's have another activity

E. ELABORATE (5 mins)
 The teacher will give two situations or
scenarios for students to identify and
locate the places on Earth using the
coordinates given.

Situation 1:
You are an investigator and you were
told to investigate these coordinates:
20 degrees N, latitude and 15 degrees
W, longitude. Now locate it on the
map.

Situation 2:
You were born a pirate but a good
pirate and you are the protector of the
seas because the sea is your treasure
and you wanted to protect it from bad
people. You received a report that there
is a poacher collecting endangered
species of turtles in these coordinates
35 degrees S, latitude and 40 degrees
W, longitude.
