IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

The ability to communicate well has always provided advantages to those who possess it.
Communication has a rich history and its traditions can still be seen in modern way
communication concepts. The ancient world both the east and the west depended heavily
on oral communication. As writing became more important as a permanent record of
communication, author and books on written communication principles appeared.

Effective communication to people outside the organization can help create a good
reputation and have a positive impact on its ultimate success. The right letter, proposal,
report, telephone call or personal conversation can win back a disgruntled customer, create
a desire for a firm’s product or service, and help negotiate a profitable sale, encourage
collections, motivate performance and in general create good will.

The prime requisite of promotable executive is ability to communicate. Too often those who
cannot communicate effectively in either oral or written communications remained buried
in lower, dead end jobs. Member of management spend 60 to 90 percent of their working
days communicating, speaking, writing and listening.

Effective communication is important in any setting you find yourself in, from your home to
your work and school environments. This is because we live in an interconnected and
interdependent world in which we rely on our relationships with others to be able to survive
and thrive, both personally and professionally.

Effective Communication is important for the development of an organization. It is

something which helps the managers to perform the basic functions of management-
Planning, Organizing, Motivating and Controlling. Communication skills whether written or
oral form the basis of any business activity.

Communication serves as the foundation of every facet of a business. Thus, it can be said
that effective communication is the building block of an organization. Some of the benefits
of effective communication skills are:
 Communication keeps the foundation of motivation. It helps the employer to know
how a job is being performed and to improve performance if it is not up to the mark.
 Communication acts as a source of information and helps in the decision making
process and helps in identifying the alternative course of action.
 Communication also helps in building people’s attitude. A well informed person will
always have better attitude than a less informed person. Different forms of
communication like magazines, journals and meetings will help the employees to
form different attitudes.
In the current business scenario, no business can survive in isolation. Socializing is very
important and communication is the tool that helps in socializing. Apart from the other
functions of management, it also helps in the controlling process of management. It allows
the managers to know about the grievances of the subordinates and helps the subordinates
to know about the policies of the organization. Communication is one of the basic features
of management. It is instrumental in raising the morale of the employees. It is through
communication, verbal or non-verbal, that people submit different feedback and
requirements to the management.
Satisfaction
Being able to communicate your needs and desires to others can help you gain the
satisfaction that comes with being able to get whatever you need or want (as we cannot
gain anything we are unable to ask for).
Reduces Stress
Effective communication can be very helpful in reducing any interpersonal tensions you
experience. It also helps decrease miscommunication in your personal and professional life,
which can be a great source of stress.
Intimacy
Communicating effectively creates a greater sense of intimacy and closeness between
people and serves as a bridge in a relationship that connects two or more people. Effective
communication, particularly deep listening, enables people to be open and trusting in their
relationships, which is why it paves the way for deeper intimacy.
Successful Career
The Teaching of Psychology 2002 Journal reported that the most useful career skill reported
by graduates of American universities was interpersonal skills. According to the well-known
"Eye on Psi Chi" psychology magazine, 39 employers reported that their number-one
desired skill for new hires was effective communication skills.
Understanding Others
Effective communication, particularly being able to ask clarifying questions and listening well
to others, can greatly help you in understanding what the feelings and thoughts of others
are. This is beneficial because it enables you to meet the needs of others in your life, which
empowers you to make others feel good and can increase how well liked you are by those in
your life.
Being Understood
Communicating effectively through your own words and body language helps you explain
your thoughts and emotions to others, which helps you feel a sense of acceptance, unity
and belonging.
Saving Time
Communicating effectively can go a long way in helping you save time. Particularly in a work
setting, knowing when it is appropriate to communicate via fax, email or phone or to have
an in-person conversation with someone else can save a company a lot of money and time.
Communicating over the phone about a time-sensitive issue, for example, saves the time it
takes to meet with someone in person and yet enables you to confront issues that might be
too complicated for email (or require too much back and forth)
