STUDENT ID NUMBER :
2. What are the commonly used materials in process industry? Discuss in detail. (6 marks)
i. Steels (0.8)
a. Carbon steel, Killed carbon steel – cheap, widely available (0.25)
b. Low chrome alloys (<9% Cr) – better corrosion resistance than CS, KCS (0.3)
ii. Stainless steels: (0.8)
a. 304 – cheapest austenitic stainless steel (0.3)
b. 316 – better corrosion resistance than 304, more expensive. The addition of 2%
molybdenum provides greater resistance to acids and localized corrosion caused by
chloride ions. (0.3)
c. Low-carbon versions, such as 316L or 304L, have carbon contents below 0.03% and are
used to avoid corrosion problems caused by welding. (0.25)
iii. Nickel Alloys (0.8)
a. Inconel, Incolloy – high temperature oxidizing environments (0.3)
b. Monel, Hastelloy – expensive, but high corrosion resistance, used for strong acids (0.3)
iv. Other metals such as aluminum and titanium are used for special applications. (0.8)
v. Fiber reinforced plastics are used for some low temperature & pressure applications. (0.8)
