PCA-Ethical Communities Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the four ethical communities
2. Apply the ethical communities to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My situation was a meeting that our store had at Starbucks. This meeting happened because
we needed to reinforce the processes of the organization because a lot of stores had an issue of
not following the correct processes. Within this meeting, all of us played games and watched
videos that helped to understand these processes better. My role within the organization is a shift
supervisor.

2) Describe how the ethics of the organization influenced the situation.

The ethics of the organization is way more based on how customers are treated rather than
how the employees are treated. We are taught to just accept it if a customer yells at us and to try
to de-escalate the situation. However, there are no rules in place that protects employees from
harmful customers. There was a time where the customer was getting very angry because we
made his drink incorrectly. We were wiping down the tables in preparation to close and he came
up to the barista and threw his 200 degree drink in her face. There are no rules in place to protect
the workers against this, which is where I feel that being unethical affected this situation more
than being ethical.

In this meeting, they realized the workers were not following the rules put in place. They
took this time to reinforce the rules, although no one was happy about these rules. They realize
that these rules are unethical. Every week we get a survey to talk about how our shifts for the
week have gone. They are aware of all of the unethical things that happen in their stores
constantly. They are prioritizing profit gain over the wellbeing of their workers. This leaves all
of the workers to become unmotivated and the meeting did not inspire people to change their
ways.

3) Recommend how you would apply one of the ethical communities for an alternative
course of action regarding your case.

1
The ethical community I would use to make an alternative course of action would be human
resources. It is stated in the text that human resources is about extended family, caring, and love
(Bolman & Deal, 2021). Part of working at Starbucks means that all of the workers call each
other partner as opposed to coworker. It is a part of the Starbucks community to treat each other
as family. Using this community, we could reform some of the rules that are unethical and show
that corporate cares about how the baristas are doing.

Changing some of the unethical rules will motivate the workers and it will allow corporate to
show that they care about what we are experiencing. When unethical things happen within our
stores, it becomes tough to feel like a family. We call each other partners because it is what we
are used to but it feels like it does not have the same meaning as it did before. Giving more of a
way to feel like a family by implementing these changes will have a lasting effect that will
motivate everyone.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about ethics.

The meeting was a good way to implement ethical change. This serves to give everyone the
same knowledge and bring everyone together like a family. Unfortunately this is the only good
thing that I believe they did. I would change the way that they went about holding this meeting.
This includes changing some of the rules that are unethical. They were insistent about keeping
the same rules as they had before, however, these rules are more suited towards giving
everything the customers need while taking away from employee needs. There is an ethical
problem within an organization if a customer can throw a very hot drink at an employee and get
away with it.

Another thing I would change is making a plan for improvement for the future. As a
corporate, it is effective to motivate your employees if you give them new rules that establish
being ethical. It is even more effective if you are able to make a plan for the future to establish
more ways to be ethical. There are some things that take time in an organization. It is not
possible for everything to be effective immediately. I feel as though it would have been great to
come up with a plan for the future to show that corporate is working hard to improve the working
situation for every barista.
