I me my mine
you you your yours
he him his his
she her her hers
it it its its
we us our ours
you you your yours
they them their theirs

Now study these rules:

 Personal subject pronouns go before the verb:
 I am at home.

 You like music.

He wants to buy a new car.
 However, we place the auxiliary verb before subject pronouns in questions:
 Can you help me?

 Has she got the book?

 Does he write very often?
 Personal object pronouns come after verbs and prepositions:
 She loves me.

 We send you an e-mail every day.

 We go with him.
 A possessive adjective is followed by a noun and a possessive pronoun replaces it.
 This is my van. It is mine.

 Your lorry is very big, but theirs is the biggest one.

 His house is enormous, but ours is very small.

 Read the following blog and abstract all the pronouns, then classify
them in the table below.
The other day I stopped in front the door of a very tall building, which
looked very old. I found a phone? I switched it on. Of course it wasn’t mine.
Suddenly, nicely dressed people started to arrive and enter the building.
Everyone got really excited when a car arrived and a smartly dressed man got
out. The man went into the building and stood and waited.
After about half an hour a white car arrived. It was full of flowers and
bows. A woman in a very big white dress got out. (It was so big that she
needed the help of two children to walk.) She also carried a bunch of flowers
and her face was covered with a white veil. When she arrived everyone got
very excited and they started to play music inside the building.
The woman went into the building holding the arm of a man who was in
the car with her, (in this time I picked my phone and I started recording a
video). After a while the woman came out again, but this time she was holding
the arm of the other man. They were very happy and when they left the
building everyone threw rice at them. I I think it was uncooked.

I have a large family. My father is 57. (fifty-seven) He works as an engineer at a plant. My
mother is 55. She works part-time as a nurse. My younger brother is a student of economics. He
is going to graduate next year. I also have an older sister. She is married and lives with her family
in an apartment house not far from us. They often visit us. Her daughter Lena, my niece, is a very
talented girl. She plays the piano and writes interesting poems.
I am married. My wife Olga is a schoolteacher. She teaches mathematics. We have two
children, a boy and a girl. My son Victor is six years old, and my daughter Anna is three years
old. They go to a kindergarten near our house. My wife picks them up on her way home from
work and takes a long walk with them in the park. My mother looks after the children when we
work late, and my mother-in-law takes care of them on Saturdays.
We live in a large house with a nice garden. There is enough room for all of us, and I even
have my own study in the attic. It is small, but I like it. There is a table with my computer on it, a
chair, and a book shelf. I spend a lot of time there working with my papers and studying English.
We have a lot of relatives. My aunt and two uncles live in a small town about 60 kilometers

Reassessing the Impacts of Brain Drain on Developing Countries
Brain drain, which is the action of having highly skilled and educated people leaving their country to work
abroad, has become one of the developing countries concern. Brain drain is also referred to as human capital flight.
More and more third world science and technology educated people are heading for more prosperous countries
seeking higher wages and better working conditions. This has of course serious consequences on the sending
countries.
While many people believe that immigration is a personal choice that must be understood and respected,
others look at the phenomenon from a different perspective. What makes those educated people leave their
countries should be seriously considered and a distinction between push and pull factors must be made. The push
factors include low wages and lack of satisfactory working and living conditions. Social unrest, political conflicts
and wars may also be determining causes. The pull factors, however, include intellectual freedom and substantial
funds for research.
Brain drain has negative impact on the sending countries economic prospects and competitiveness. It
reduces the number of dynamic and creative people who can contribute to the development of their country.
Likewise, with more entrepreneurs taking their investments abroad, developing countries are missing an
opportunity of wealth creation. This has also negative consequences on tax revenue and employment.
Most of the measures taken so far have not had any success in alleviating the effects of brain drain. A more
global view must take into consideration the provision of adequate working and living conditions in the sending
countries. Another option should involve encouraging the expatriates to contribute their skill to the development of
their countries without necessarily physically relocating.

Children for whom school has no point

Many children do not go to school either because their parents want them at home as carers for
siblings, or simply because their parents cannot be bothered to send them. Thousands more are not
registered at any school at all, because of their families' unstable lives.
Underlying this dreadful situation there are two central truths. First of all, the problem of children
not going to school often has more to do with their parents than with the children themselves. Secondly,
once children go to school, we need to make sure that the experience is a positive one so that they want to
keep on going.
In Britain, the Ministry of Education has introduced a complex package of sticks and carrots to
persuade schools to bring truants' and excluded children back into the classroom. It is paying grants so
that a thousand schools can set up special units to help these children. Schools receive the grant if they
bring a target number of children back to school; if they do not meet the target, the grant is withdrawn.
Parents are the subject of this campaign, too: the Home Office has introduced fines for parents who fail
to send their children to school, and has given the police power to pick up truants on the streets.
 'truant = a child who does not go to school when he or she should.
 Grants = amount of money that the government gives you for a specific purpose
I. Comprehension :

a) Why do many parents not send their children to school?

‫ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬

Relative Clauses
There are two kinds of relative clauses: defining relative clauses (Restrictive Relative Clauses) and non-
defining relative clauses (Non- Restrictive Relative Clauses)
Defining Relative Clauses
 A Defining Relative Clause gives necessary information and is essential to the meaning of the
main sentence. The clause is not put in commas.
E.g.: He is the actor who was killed in a car crash.
I read the article about Barcelona which was published in The El Mundo Deportivo.
 The relative pronoun can be omitted when it is the object of the relative clause.
E.g. The man (whom) you spoke to is my boss.
This is the factory (which) he left last week.

Non- Defining Relative Clauses
 A Non- Defining Relative Clause gives extra information and is not essential to the meaning of
the main sentence It just adds some more information. It can be removed from the sentence without
destroying the central meaning.
 The relative cause is put in commas.
E.g.: John, who is very lazy, failed his test again.
 In non-defining relative clauses, the relative pronouns cannot be omitted.

Non-defining relative clauses

Read the text about Bob Marley and answer the questions below.

One of the greatest stars in the world of music is Bob Marley. He was born in Kingston,
the capital of Jamaica, in 1945. His mother named him Robert Nesta Marley but he was always
known as Bob Marley.
The boy grew up with his mother in a very poor area of Kingston called Trenchtown,
where life was very hard. He began to sing and play the guitar, and when he was only nineteen he
made his first record. A year later he formed a trio with two friends, Peter Tosh and Bunny
Livingstone. They called themselves ‘The Wailers’. Their songs, composed by Bob Marley, and
sung and played by the three men, were about life in Trenchtown.
Bob Marley and the Wailers became very popular in Jamaica. His songs with their
political message and strong rhythm made him a national hero. And this new reggae music was
soon popular outside Jamaica too. In the 1970s, Bob Marley signed a music contract in Britain
and after that he became famous all over the world. Everyone knew about the singer, guitarist
and composer from Jamaica. Everyone recognized the Rasta man with his hair in dreadlocks.
Everyone danced to or sang his famous songs like ‘No Woman, No Cry’ and ‘I Shot the Sheriff’.

Comprehension test
It’s unbelievable! Knowledge is spreading rapidly nowadays. Schools, universities are found all
over the world. Nations spend enormous sums on education. Yet, the educational level of students has
declined: young people are hardly ever able to read a daily newspaper or even write an understandable
letter. What’s happening in our schools? And who should be blamed?
Actually, the decline in the educational standards is due to the fact that parents no longer help in
their children’s education. They send them off to school beginning at age five or six, and then expect the
government to educate them. They do not take into account that education is a process that begins at
birth. Experts agree that the first few years set the foundation to future performance.
In his book, STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT AMERICAN EDUCATION, Theodore M. Black has
perceived the problem. He warns, “Parents, not schools or governments, are fundamentally responsible
for the education of their children.”
Parents should realize that schools are only one element in the education of their children. Infants
are taught, whether knowingly or not, by their parents from birth. They cannot just wash their hands of
responsibility for their children’s education.
Parents should contribute to the teaching of their offspring. They don’t need to be teachers to tutor
their children. What they need is the will, and some imagination, to prepare them to function intelligently
within society. Thus we will see that educational standards and students’ achievements would no longer
go downward.

The term 'virus is derived from the Latin word for poison or slime. It was originally applied to
the noxious stench emanating from swamps that was thought to cause a variety of diseases in the
centuries before microbes were discovered and specifically linked to illness. But it was not until
almost the end of the nineteenth century that a true virus was proven to be the cause of a disease.

The nature of viruses made them impossible to detect for many years even after bacteria had
been discovered and studied. Not only are viruses too small to be seen with a light microscope, they
also cannot be detected through their biological activity, except as it occurs in conjunction with
other organisms. In fact, viruses show no traces of biological activity by themselves. Unlike
bacteria, they are not living agents in the strictest sense Viruses are very simple pieces of organic
material composed only of nucleic acid, either DNA or RNA, enclosed in a coat of protein made up
of simple structural units.(Some viruses also contain carbohydrates and lipids.) They are parasites,
requiring human, animal, or plant cells to live. The virus replicates by attaching to a cell and
injecting its nucleic acid.' once inside the cell, the DNA or RNA that contains the virus' genetic
information takes over the cell's biological machinery, and the cell begins to manufacture viral
proteins rather than its own.

Sleep
Experts say that people (adults) need at least 6 hours of sleep every night. If they do
not get enough sleep they will feel sleepy the whole day. Younger kids need at least 9
hours of sleep every night. After school – activities can take away from sleep time for
