BACTERIAL PATHOGENESIS

Bacterial Process in Causing Disease

Pathogen is any material or organism that can cause

disease in the host such as bacteria. Bacteria can
damage the host's defense system starting from the skin
surface of the digestive tract, respiratory tract,
urogenital tract. While Pathogenesis itself is the
mechanism of infection and the mechanism of disease
development. Infection is an invasion of the host by
microbes that reproduce and associate with the host
tissue. Infection is different from disease.
Entrance of Microorganisms to
the Host's Body

Pathogenic microorganisms can enter the host body

through various routes, for example through the
mucous membranes, skin or the parental route. Many
bacteria and viruses have access to the host body
through the mucous membranes of the respiratory,
gastrointestinal, genitourinary tract, conjunctiva, and
the important membrane covering the eyeball. and
eyelids.
Host Susceptibility

Susceptibility to bacterial infection depends on the physiological and immunological conditions of the host and
the virulence of the bacteria. Host defense against bacterial infection is nonspecific and specific (antibody)
mechanisms. The nonspecific mechanism is carried out by neutrophil cells and macrophages. The development
of specific immunity such as an antibody response takes several weeks. The normal bacterial flora of the skin
and mucosal surfaces also provides protection against colonization by pathogenic bacteria. In healthy
individuals, normal bacterial flora that penetrate the body can be destroyed by the host's humoral and cellular
mechanisms. The best example of susceptibility is AIDS, in which CD4+ helper lymphocytes are progressively
reduced by 1/10 by the immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The mechanism of resistance is influenced by age,
deficiency, and genetics. The defense system (both specific and nonspecific) of the elderly is reduced. The
baby's immune system is not yet developed, so it is vulnerable to pathogenic bacterial infections. Some
individuals have genetic abnormalities in the defense system.
Various Ways to Control Bacterial Diseases

1. Bacteral Leaf Streak (x. Oryzae pv. oryzicola) This disease from
bacteria can be controlled by technical culture, resistant varieties,
and seed treatment (seed treatment) with chemicals. Straw and
turiang left in the field after the crops are harvested should be
removed to prevent the spread of disease to the next crop. Wide
spacing is also very helpful in suppressing this disease. Resistant
varieties are a practical component for controlling this disease.
2. Red Stripe Control This bacterial disease is very difficult
to cure. What can be done is to inhibit the development
and spread of the disease, through technical culture. When
symptoms are visible, the disease can be suppressed by
reducing humidity in the plant canopy and increasing plant
self defense through potassium fertilization. Planting
should not be flooded continuously, because besides being
unnecessary, it will also cause humidity in the plant canopy
to approach 100%.
