“El Filibusterismo”

Introduction:
El Filibusterismo, also known as the Filibusterism, Reign of Greed, or the
subversion, is the sequel to Noli Me Tangere. It is less romantic and more idealistic
and revolution and this novel depicts the Spaniard’s abuse and racism against the
Filipino. This novel was dedicated to the three martyred priests Mariano Gomez,
Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora who were executed unjustly by the Spaniards.
Nonetheless, it addresses the Filipino community’s bravery and demonstrates our
countrymen’s amazing fortitude in confronting the Spaniard’s avarice and
savagery. Accusing the three priests as traitors to the government and sentenced
them to death.
The protagonist of El Filibusterismo is Simoun, a wealthy jeweler. He was
Crisostomo Ibarra of the Noli, who, with Elias' help, escaped from the pursuing
soldiers at Laguna de Bay, dug up his buried treasure, and moved to Cuba, where
he became wealthy and befriended many Spanish officials. He eventually returned
to the Philippines, where he could roam freely. He is a strong character not only
because he is a wealthy jeweler, but also because he is a friend and adviser to the
governor general.

Simoun, who is actually Noli Ibarra in disguise, conveys an entirely different

personality in El Filibusterismo. While Ibarra is trusting, aspiring, and loving,
Simoun is now cunningly careful in his dealings, distrusting, and extremely bitter.
Something changed in Rizal, and this is reflected in the personalities he gave his El
Filibusterismo character.

Simoun appears to be a friend of Spain. However, he is covertly plotting a horrific

revenge on the Spanish government. His two tremendous passions are rescuing
Maria Clara from the Santa Clara nunnery and platting a revolution against the
despised Spanish overlords.
Reflection:
I acknowledge and understood his solution but I cannot completely agree with it.
I sympathized with him because his actions and emotions are the outcome of
what he has gone through. The audience felt the same way about the major
characters where they belittled, criticized, abused, and have done bad things.
We want them to achieve their goal and to have a happy ending but it does not
apply to all situations, and in real life. It is rare for someone to forgive himself, his
family, his friends, and his country if he lacks the support ang and trust from
others and who will fight beside him. Overall, El Filibusterismo was a fantastic
story for me.

Conclusion:
El Filibusterismo aims to enlighten the Filipino people closer to the truth. The first
novel, encouraged people to ask and aspire for change and liberation while in this
novel, the society is argued to open its eyes to reality and rebel against oppression
and abuse against the nation to unite.
