    At the end of the discussion, the students should be able:


    a. to analyze art elements (color, line, shape, etc.) and principles (texture, proportion, emphasis,
    harmony, etc.) of arts in the production of arts and crafts inspired by the cultures of South
    Asia and
    b. use the different motifs and designs as manifested in their folk arts.

    The region consists of the countries of
    Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India,
    Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

    Pakistan, and Sri Lanka
    Very good!

    a. Indus Civilization Art


    -Little art survives from the Indus
    civilization; most is small sculpture.
    Perhaps the most famous aesthetic
    remnants of the Indus civilization are
    soapstone seals.

    b. Buddhist Architecture
    Most surviving architecture of the Indian
    kingdom age is religious in nature.
    Remarkably, many of these structures are
    rock-cut architecture (they were carved
    out of solid natural rock).

    What does it mean when we say rock-cut


    architecture? (Student answers may vary)
    Rock-cut architecture is the creation of
    structures, buildings, and sculptures by
    excavating solid rock where it naturally
    occurs.

    c. Indian Sculptures
    The predominant subject of South Asian
    sculpture is the human figure. In addition
    to
    architectural carvings, South Asian
    sculptors produced many free-standing
    statues, primarily in stone (but also
    bronze).
