WHAT IS BIM?
The information of a structure is created and managed through a comprehensive process called Building Information
Modelling (BIM). BIM creates a digital representation of a structure throughout its lifecycle, from planning and design to
construction and operation, based on an intelligent model and enabled by a cloud platform. (Source: Civilguruji. (n.d.). What Is BIM?

WHAT IS AUTOMATION?
Automation is the creation and application of technologies to produce and deliver goods and services with minimal human
intervention. Automation is the process of achieving the state where human input is not necessary for task execution in line
with expected results. (Source: Admin. (2023, February 16). Automation of business processes. NeuroSYS. https://neurosys.com/blog/repetitive-task-automation)

UK BIM STANDARD
There is no fix standards for the Automation Topic. Therefore, There are a number of standards that define BIM information
structures and processes internationally. The United Kingdom has been a leader in adopting and implementing Building
Information Modeling (BIM) standards and practices. The UK has established a set of standards and guidelines to promote
BIM adoption and its integration with automation. (Source: bsigroup/bimstandard. (n.d.). https://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/iso-19650-BIM/)

Automation can help ensure designs meet building codes and regulations by analyzing the BIM model against relevant
standards. Dynamo and I-check helps assess the environmental impact of building designs in Revit, ensuring

1. BIM 3D model
Accurate 3D geometry of building components, including walls, floors, columns, roofs, etc.
2. Model object properties
Material, size, dimensions and other physical attributes of building elements.
3. Data parameters
3D model values such as lengths, areas, volumes, rooms and material quantities.
4. Project documentation
Information on project requirements, standards and regulations.
5. Performance data
Parameters for energy simulation, daylighting analysis and energy efficiency performance.
In summary, automation uses this data to optimise processes and analysis tools use the information to drive
insight, simulation and efficiency. Ensuring that BIM 's models are comprehensive and accurate is
therefore critical to the success of its BIM and automation applications in the AEC industry.

this topic and its technics on a given case study
To understand BIM and Automation, the case study has been selected in Malaysia, KL locations. The aim is to prove the
method’s applicability and functionality for different rooms with different sizes. Thus, the case study (Figure 6.1) consists
of a ground floor level bangalow building located in KL, Malaysia. It has some of the most representative characteristics
of sustainability design approaches. The level has a bedroom, a kitchen, laundry dining room, living room, powder room
and garden terrace (each compartment area is described in Figure 6.1).

Conclusion, Dynamo is a flexible tool towards BIM and Automation concept during Design Stage to
End of building life cycle. Understanding the importance of programming work together with BIM
Industrial, it helps to provides more options to finish the task on time.

Demonstration of BIM and Automation
Case Study 1 – Dynamo Automation extract data into documentation
The overview of the dynamo framework in demonstrating repetitive task and understanding programming.
The demonstration is first about understanding the main element or task to be done in Dynamo. The main
method is the spatial plan. To extract data from the model BIM, we need to get all the spatial categories as the
first step of the task.
12
3
After all the rooms are ready, the next step is to group the key criteria of the room plan, namely room name, room
area, room number and levels. This shows that it is a repetitive task, and Dynamo saves the time by duplicating it in
an automated way..
13
5
Finally, the final data extraction will be more flexible than the normal Revit data extraction. Users will have the
ability to create different file formats and data. In addition, Dynamo also provides a platform that automates access
to the building data, because once you are in Excel, you can modify the data as needed.

Demonstration of BIM and Automation
Case Study 2 – Differences on different tool in Automation for calculation
In Malaysia Submission requirement, there are some standards need to be follow during submission to local
authorities department. The most common calculation for submission is the 10% natural lighting and 5% natural
ventilation for your rooms in your building. Based on traditional AutoCad tool, the calculation of Natural
ventilation and Natural Lighting is by manually.

Case Study 2 – Differences on different tool in Automation for calculation
In traditional way, you will need to sort the window and door schedule and manually calculate and extract in to excel
file. However in Revit, some company provides the automated calculation for the requirement.
