The Best Before Project works with another organisation called Fareshare which connects local
supermarkets with local organisations. Fareshare has helped the Best Before Project connect with
Tesco, one of the biggest supermarkets in Britain. Every Monday, volunteers from the Best Before
Project go to the local branch of Tesco and collect fruit, vegetables, bakery products, baby food, pet
food and dried food items like coffee. These items are available at the Best Before Project shop on
Tuesday mornings.
Some of the food that is donated includes products that are past the “best before” date. All food that
is sold in shops is required to have a “best before” date printed on the label. This means it is
recommended to eat the food before the date. However, most people believe it is an expiration date,
and you mustn’t eat the food once this date has passed. This is not true. You can still eat most of
these products but they may have less flavour and quality. Throwing away these products is very
wasteful. It is important to realise that there are many people who don’t have enough to eat and
these donated products could help them.
Volunteers from the Best Before Project also deliver food to homeless shelters, elderly people and
various charities. They really make an effort to make sure that no one in the community is hungry.
They are enthusiastic and very hopeful that they will meet their goals of providing people with
necessary products, reducing food waste and changing public opinion about food labelling.
13 What does the writer say about the “best before” date on food?

A Trip to Nottingham
by Emily Smith, age 15
Last summer, my sister and I spent a few weeks with our grandparents at their home in Nottingham.
Nottingham is a city in the East Midlands, and, in my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful places in
England. When we got there, the weather was great. 16 But unfortunately, the next day it started to
rain, and it didn’t stop for the entire time we were there. At first, I thought that we wouldn’t be able to do
anything. 17 So, my grandma bought us raincoats, and the next day we set off to explore the city.
We were going to take a tour. After all, it’s best to learn from an expert. But in the end, we didn’t need
one. 18 We began the day by visiting the Lace Market. This area has been populated for 1,000 years,
but it became famous during the 1800s when it became a global centre of lace manufacturing. By 12:00,
we were all really hungry, so we made our way to the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which is one of the
oldest inns in England. It dates back to 1189 and today is a pub with a wonderful atmosphere. 19
Under the inn, there are many caves and passages.
Of course, we couldn’t visit Nottingham without learning about Robin Hood. He was a famous historical
character who lived in Sherwood Forest and robbed from the rich to give to the poor. We visited an
interactive museum where we sat in a special cable car. 20 We got to ‘see’ the terrible Sheriff of
Nottingham.
Despite the rain, we managed to have a day filled with history, fun and good food! But we didn’t have
time to see even half of what Nottingham has to offer. My grandparents promised that next time we visit,
we could go on a walking ghost tour of Nottingham. That’s something I’m definitely looking forward to.
