CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Solid waste is a resource that can be recovered” (RA 9003, ZWRMP 2005), the

participation of the households is seen to be of paramount importance in Managing the solid

wastes they, in the first place, generate. An important consideration in Finding an appropriate

solution to address the solid waste management problem is to Understand the characteristics of

the solid wastes generated and check the generators’ Management practices together with their

attitude on the relevant salient features of the Current solid waste management scheme which

eventually determines their degree of Participation.

Reflecting on the increasing level of economic activities, many countries have Observed

a dramatic increase in solid waste generation over the past few years. This Condition can be

observed in both developed and developing economies in the world. In the Philippines, the

increase in the quantity of solid wastes can be directly or indirectly associated To a number of

factors which comprise proliferation of imported low cost consumer products With inexpensive

or non-environment friendly product packaging, a gradual change in people Lifestyle and

product consumption, and the increase of supply of disposable products in the Local market.

The combination of these factors translates into generation of loads of solid Wastes which when

not properly managed creates an impending national problem.

Barangay Poblacion, Bansud, Oriental Mindoro is situated within the barangay towns of

the Municipality of Oriental Mindoro . The research site is a densely populated barangay with a

Total population of 1,790 (NSO 2010). The house structures within the community Demonstrate

a noticeable socio-economic difference among residents consisting of low- to-Middle-income

economic standing. This is an essential demographic characteristic that Verifies how a

barangay consisting of residents with different economic status manages its Solid wastes.

The purpose of this study is to determine the lived experiences of the residents in

Barangay Poblacion, Bansud, Oriental Mindoro in solid waste management.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to describe the attitude of residents in Brgy. Poblacion, Bansud Oriental

Mindoro on solid waste management.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions.

1. What are the experiences of the residents In Brgy. Poblacion through solid waste

management ?

2. What are the challenges of the residents experience on the solid waste management ?

3. How do the residents cope in solid waste management?

Significant of the Study

The result of the study will benefit the following;

Resident. This study will help them know how solid waste management help their community.

Community. A group of people with a common characteristics or interest living together within a

larger society.
Future researchers. With the help of this study it will sense as their guide and one basis in

making a similar study

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the residents in Brgy. Poblacion, Oriental Mindoro. In this

study only 10 respondents are needed.

Definition of Terms

Solid waste management. Refers to the complete process of collecting treating and disposing

of solid waste.

Attitudes. Is a psychological construct that is a mental and emotional entity that inheres or

characteristic a person, their attitude to approach to something or their personal view on it.

Theoretical Framework

Antrop illustrates urbanisation in denoting the transformation Process of a rural living

condition into an urban – like lifestyle, it Involves a move from old – fashion cultural

environments including Informal economic and political institutions creating relative anonymity

leading to formalized societies of urban setting (4). In contact Kelbaugh recognized the theory of

urban “ as a controlling but neglected strategy to mitigate ecological footprint and global climate

change (2.5). The author claimed cities become an ecological sacrifice come that even greenest

of cities inflict local environmental wounds that nature must heal they leave wounds in pursuit of

economic development. Nevertheless in the arena revenue realisation, cities are generally more

productive and creative per capital than rural communities (2). But they tend to have larger

ecological footprint than country side (5). Collectively lowering individual footprints might be

more acceptable once we include social relations such as grassroots initiatives that could
contribute to sustainable sources of well being (6). The ecological footprints of different cities

are driven by solid economic factors like infrastructure, disposable income and cultural habits.

This theory is related to our study because it explain the importance of solid waste

management into community and what is the possible effect of this.

According to waste management (as cited by Gamaralalage et.al,2028) solid waste

management is considered one of the serious environmental issues in the Philippines, with

corresponding linkages to the climate change and sustainable development goals. However,

methane linked with indiscriminate dumping of municipal solid waste has received the much

attention with regard to public health and climate change.

Solid waste management is a center with integrated landfill. However, the proposed area

is adjacent to the presently used dumpsite where more than 300 waste pickers dwell and

depend on waste picking as their source of livelihood. The local Government recognized the

hidden threat imposed by the waste pickers presence for this development as stated by Paul,

J.G., Jaque, J. A., Ravena, N. & Villamar, S.P.(2018).

Moreover, Solid waste management strategies to recycle waste products are promising

practices that positively impact sustainable goals. Developing countries face many challenges,

such as municipal solid waste sorting and handling due to high population density and economic

instability by Khan et.al, (2021).

Local

In Addition, Molina et.al (2021) states that solid waste management is one of the

challenges faced by many countries. Poor solid waste management will lead to various

problems in health environment and socioeconomic aspects. Since educational institution. Solid

waste management concepts are being integrated in science education.

Majeed, A., Batool, S. A. & Chaudhry, M.N. (2018) emphasized that the study aims to

develop an understanding of existing waste management practices for a medium size city of

Pakistan and to quantify the related environment impacts using life cycle assessment.

Hirondo, et.al, (2020) investigated the best performing formulation of A/PCW composite

based on its physical and mechanical properties. Three types of A/ PCW samples with six

specimen were prepared for each type.

Foreign

Mmereki (2018) conducted the study about current status of waste management in

Botswana. A mini- review. Effective waste management practices are not all about legislative

solutions, but a combination of the environmental, social, technical, technically skilled human

resources, financial and technological resources, resources recycling, environmental pollution

awareness programmes and public participation. As a result of insufficient resources, municipal

solid waste in transition and developing countries.

Gumbiv (2015) conducted a study of current waste management and minimisation patterns

and practices. The study has revealed some patterns, practices as well as treads regarding

waste management and minimisation within the municipality. At household level, there was

some environmental awareness on waste management practices provided by the municipality

as well as local recycling options although there are numerous challenges to be resolved before

these functions can become effective.

Salsabila et.al, (2021) conducted a study about the importance of public participation in

sustainable solid waste management. Data obtained from previous studies in this article were

analysed. The result shown that I'm governance and participation become the main factors

affective the status of MSWM as it is mentioned in most of the previous studies in the

Philippines.

Local

Gequinto (2017) conducted a study about solid waste management practice of select state

Universities in Calabarzon Philippines. Result revealed that solid waste management practices

are implemented to a great extent. Among the practices, waste collection got the highest

composite mean particularly on the promotion of 3Rs in the collection of waste. On the other

hand. Waste recycling and waste treatment obtained the lowest composite mean . In terms of

waste recycling, establishing partnership with local or private business for recyclabl recovery

program was to moderate extent.

Molina, R.A. & Catan, I . (2021) conducted the study about the solid management

awareness and practices among senior high students in a state college in Zamboanga city,

Philippines. Television or radio, parents and social media are the sources of these awareness.

The result also shows that students have good solid waste management practices in terms on

segregation, reduction, reuse, recycle and disposal.

Revilla et. Al , (2020) conducted a study of nitrate removal from aqueous solution by

adsorption using municipal solid waste, devised activated biochar. Result show that initial nitrate

concentration, plt. And two way interactions have a significant effects on nitrate removal. It was

found to increases as the initial nitrate concentration and PH decreases.
