Agriculture Vs Industrialization.
OBSERVATION
Philippines is rich. The natural resources that blessed our lands are our greatest advantage.
Philippines’ climate is perfect for planting and growing crops. It helped us feed our empty stomachs.
Empty. Why? Agricultural lands are being developed into commercial, industrial and residential lands.
Rice terraces were now blazing roads, towering buildings and busy streets. It would've been making me
happy seeing how our country has been developing. You can get the things you need in stores nearby,
you can go to places that you want to go using different kinds of transportation, tourism has been
making our country known all throughout the world but why can't these changes make me happy?
Maybe because I can see these street children, beggars wherever you go. These hungry minds and
stomachs are bothering me to the point that I am questioning our government decisions. Aren't they
wise enough to choose to follow the trend without even seeing how their people are suffering?
INSIGHT
The general trends in the last two decades present a dim picture of the agriculture sector.
Significant decrease in productivity, high production costs, and low government support to the sector,
among other things, have led to a crisis in Philippine agriculture (CIDA-LGSP, 2003).The neglect of the
agriculture sector and the uneven distribution of resources worsened the poverty situation in rural
areas. Only the remittances of migrant workers to their families have enabled the latter to survive
crippling poverty brought about by stagnant agricultural productivity, stiff competition from cheaper
food imports, and periodic droughts and floods that devastated crops and livelihoods (Fact Sheet
Philippines, 2021).
“Food security is our overarching goal, second to the public health concerns. The food security of
our people during this pandemic has been and will always be the paramount goal of the Philippine
government.” Secretary Dar shared that as the pandemic showed the weakness of Philippine agriculture,
it taught the government to confront the many challenges head-on. He said increasing productivity to
guarantee adequate food supply remains the primary goal of the department and added that the agency
focused on key commodities such as rice, livestock, poultry, corn, vegetables, and coconut industry.
(DAR,2021) Investing in upgrading the agricultural sector can provide higher possibility to reduce
poverty and ensure a huge quantity of food production in the Philippines.
LEARNING
Large portions of Filipinos are supporting themselves through agriculture. Farming, forestry,
livestock and fisheries became a source of income especially to Filipinos who doesn’t finish their studies.
It is has hard for them to enter the industry without finishing a degree first.
Our country is trying their best to keep up. Straining itself to follow the path of those well-
developed and rich countries. We are in line with the countries with fastest-growing economies but the
need to adjust to the global demands is making it hard. It is just the cause and effect, the process is a
gruesome fact that our leaders have been turning a blind-eye on. What do they need to do to keep-up?
People need food and shelter, both will be found in nature. Philippines owned several million
hectares of fertile lands. Its agricultural sector employs about 30% of the population. Rice, coconut,
pineapple and sugarcanes are the top crops that are being cultivated in this rich soil. Traditional
methods of farming are strenuous so modernizing and upgrading the country’s agricultural sector will be
very helpful for Filipino farmers. This should be the main focus of the government, to make sure that
everyone is fed, clothed and secured by any means. Once this major goal reached, the country can now
go forward and be globally competitive as a strong and united country.
This Covid-19 pandemic caught us off-guard. Many employees were forced not to work resulting
to hunger and increase in poverty rate. Without their jobs they have no means of getting money to buy
their basic necessities. Having a little vegetable garden on their backyard eases the hunger for a while. It
was a simple solution that I saw Filipinos do. Staying at home and no job to rely on, they grow their own
food. Can our country use its blessings to the fullest? We are not given a land rich with natural resources
for nothing, right?
