Here is the extract

The year 2020 has been a tumultuous one for educators. Hundreds of thousands
of teachers across the globe had to get to grips with online platforms to deliver their
lessons. Millions of students were stuck at home doing their lessons via websites like
Zoom. This has created an unprecedented transformation in education as technology
has taken centre stage. The quality of education differed around the world according to
the quality of Internet connections, the level of preparedness of teachers and their
competence in engaging with the technology. It also depended on what kind of devices
students had at home. Many students were deprived of lessons because they had no
computer, tablet or smartphone.

The Education Ministry in Malaysia has rolled out a new initiative to help
underprivileged children. Around 150,000 eligible pupils from 500 schools will receive
a device to enable them to participate in online lessons. The Education Minister hopes
to build on the success of this initial rollout to expand the programme. He said: "Apart
from assisting pupils and schools in need, this pilot project is to find the best
implementation method before it is proposed for expansion." The plans include
enhancing educational television programming for students with no Internet access,
2
and employing sign language interpreters to help the hard of hearing. A teacher said
she was happy her government was prioritizing students' needs.

A regulatory body in the UK that looks after student affairs has warned
universities to be honest about online lessons. The Office for Students issued a request
to higher education providers not to make promises that lessons from September will
be in-person or face-to-face. Currently, thousands of institutions worldwide are
delivering lessons online because of the coronavirus pandemic. The quality of these
lessons quite often depends on the proficiency of teachers to successfully exploit video
conferencing platforms to replicate a classroom experience. The body said: "Tailored
support needs to be put in place." Cambridge University has announced all of its
lessons will be online until the summer of 2021.

Section 1: Summarise the extract with the length of about 120 - 150 words.
2020 has been a tumultuous year for education as everything is under the
domination of technology. Teachers and students had to operate their lessons through
online platforms. The quality of education varied due to different technology-related
conditions. Many students were deprived of lessons because of lacking the necessary
device. Therefore, Malaysia's Education Ministry has launched a new initiative to
provide poor children with a device allowing them to take part in online lessons. The
Education Minister hopes to find the best implementation method to expand the
programme based on the success of this initial launch. A regulatory agency in the UK
has required honesty from universities about online classes. Higher education providers
are also asked for no promise of in-person lessons. Due to the coronavirus pandemic,
thousands of institutions worldwide are now operating lessons online. The ability of
teachers to imitate a classroom experience is a determining factor in the quality of
these lessons.

question:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning?

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools around the world have
to remain closed in the past two years. As a result, technology has taken center stage
and education has changed drastically like never before, with the rise of online
learning, where lessons are operated remotely through digital platforms. From my
perspective, I do agree that online learning has a lot of benefits. However, I also do
have some concerns about its negative side.

On the one hand, it is indisputable that online learning has a lot of advantages.
First, it provides students with an extremely flexible and convenient schedule. We are
able to learn anytime, anywhere that we are comfortable with. It unlocks more learning
opportunities for us as it allows us to stay in our own house and take all the courses
that we are interested in from instructors in any time zone around the world, at any
time in the day. Second, we are always kept in contact with an enormous amount of
information and knowledge. We are able to access to a ton of readily available learning
materials on the Internet whenever we are in need so that we can learn a lot more
efficiently. Online lessons can also be recorded for storage and sharing for future
reference. Third, online lessons are a lot more affordable and time-saving. The money
you spend on travelling, buying uniforms, eating or accommodation does not present in
digital classes. Online courses’ fee are also more affordable. This is because a lot of
costs spent on location, facilities, equipments are eliminated. This enables students
from economically weaker areas to keep on studying and fulfill their dreams.

On the other hand, online learning does have downsides as well. First, online
learning requires great self-conscious and concentration. When you study online, it can
be easy to lose your concentration. There are a lot more things on the Internet than just
learning material. Social media websites can easily distract you. There might also be

5
some disturbances, such as children playing or people moving around. Second,
studying online for a long time is not good for your health. Constantly looking at the
computer screen can strain your eyes badly and damage your eyesight. Back problems
may also happen as a result of incorrect sitting positions. Third, the lack of interaction
in online learning may lead to feeling of isolation. In a physical classroom, you can
connect with your classmates while doing tasks or get immediate feedback from your
teacher. Contact in an online classroom can never be as lively and natural as in a
traditional one, which may heavily impact student’s mental health.

In conclusion, it is undeniable that online learning has made education a lot

more convenient. Many people consider it a huge step up in learning method, while
others believe that it is inefficient. From my standpoint, traditional education still plays
an important role while online studying should be considered as an affordable
extension to support and improve traditional education.
