Supply And Demand in a Niche Market. (Case: US. Comic Industry)

I.I Introduction
What is Niche? and what's it's relation in the Supply and Demand? As a business owner we
often hear that it is imperative that we select a particular niche to work within, but how do
you select a niche for your business? You might after all select a smaller niche market to
avoid having to compete on price with much larger businesses that have much more buying
power than you do. One of the most useful things to do when selecting a niche is to analyze
the supply and demand of a niche.

In general, as a small business owner you can charge higher price for specialized and
differentiated products or services that you promote to smaller audiences, giving higher
profitability. In contrast, a larger business isn't going to touch the smaller niches because
they want to make larger profits than the smaller niches will allow them too.

As my Niche is Illustration in Comic book graphics and 3D graphics designer, my business

case is related to the niche that was discuss above. What's unique about my business is that
my clients are from overseas, mostly from the US.

1.1 Artwork (By me) commission for publishing company based in US.

It is a conscious decision in my part to build a business based on a specific niche. I've been
doing this for 6 months, making artworks for an existing industry in the US.

The Comic Book Intellectual Property business is booming in the US, Japan and Korea. Yet,
they seek talents outside of their own country because other countries can cheapen the
product without sacrificing the quality. Multimedia Content based from comics such as
Marvel from the US, or Attack of the Titan from Japan are a prime example that
entertainment content is a real business, yet in Indonesia it is has not been a mainstream
discussion in the local market, although there are a group of niche market that currently
thriving. From comic books, the products then can be develop into Film Series, Merchandise
and Licensing Business.
I'm currently working on a full comic book pages for a $100 a page which is a total of 34
pages for bi-monthly. If this project can create a great impact for my business and my name,
then a considerable expansion is needed in order to scale and manage projects.

I.II. Analysis ( Data, Provisions, regulations, or statistical projections from reliable

resources)

Since the market is niche, I search what is the fastest result when it comes to getting
potential client. My friend recommends doing some open commission on Facebook group
where aspired artist seek work for the comic book industry. I opened a price for $50 for a
Pin-Up cover art. My first attempt was successful, yet I updated my price to $60 a page. I
continue to up my price within an industry standard there at a $100 a page.

As long as I could maintain the quality and speed, then I could make a good reputation and
sell more artwork service to other clients.

An example of a business model for this type of venture is Marvel Entertainment.

Marvel Entertainment started out as Marvel comics, founded in 1939. The Brand had quite a
long journey and mileage so we must look closer on their journey of their business model.
Since 2009, Marvel is purchases by Disney Ent. for $4.3 Billion. This purchased is made
possible because they develop a licensing business model for all forms of their media.

Marvel started out as a publishing business, but 80 years later it branches to all sorts of
media. Marvel Studios, the film production studio had becomes a billion dollar industry.
Their head to head rival is DC comics/ DC Entertainment, with characters like Batman &
Superman.

The main marketing segment is children and young adults. Therefore, we must acknowledge
at what the global audience preference and consumer behavior on comic book reading
consumption, which is more towards US comic book, Japanese Manga and Korean Manhwa
reader.

I.III. CONCLUSION

It is still categorize as a rare venture which cost a lot of doubt in the business and
entrepreneurial side of things. But interestingly in some countries like USA, Japan
and Korea, this type of business has a very supported ecosystem and audience. Due
to its novelty nature, many local people just view it as a hobby or for passing the time
or entertainment after you work or studying. As long as Entertainment companies
such as Marvel continue to supply Content, the Demand of market followers and
players will continue to rise. It will create many (although niche) jobs and
opportunities, thus continuing Supply and Demand.
